My current Linux laptop is an HP Ze4200. It has been flawless since the day I got it but now it is time for it to be passed on to my oldest daughter so I can upgrade (how I love back to school). The new laptop I've ordered is the ZV5000V with the Nvidea 64 mb card, AMD 64 3000+, and the usual suspects under the hood. Only thing I really altered as the HD since I plan on replacing it. I am looking forward to the challenge of getting everything working on a new lappy under Linux. Suspect wireless will be the hardest part but the AMD 64 processor may prove to be an issue to. Sure hope not.

I've Googled and searched all over the place but despite finding lots of information, my newbie mind is getting a bit overwhelmed. Perhaps you can help. This is the problem... On my network of 3 Mandrake 10.0 machines, all can access the internet and eachother. On occasion one of these computers may get "The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in this URL". I can go to another computer and visit the exact same page and it is fine. Sometimes I can refresh and it is fine, others, not so lucky. My wife needs to visit one of the pages giving us issues and I prefer that she didn't have to use my laptop everytime : ) This is my configuration... cable modem-server NIC eth0 auto IP LAN-server NIC eth1 static IP 192.168.0.1 switch laptop auto IP other PC auto IP I used the Mandrake configurtion utility to set up ICS on the server and auto IP on all other PCs. Any idea what gives? I checked the resolve.conf and find the nameserver provided by my ISP on each machine. There are actually 3 listed on my server. Thanks in advance!

They come with ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 cards. A shot in the dark perhaps but have you disabled APIC in the boot control panel? I have seen and heard lots of problems with this. I searched Google and didn't find anything usefull. Seems there are a number of people running Linux on this PC with nothing more than the usual issues (no 3d with ATI, winmodem, wireless, etc.). I hope you get it figured out.

Nice rig Cybrjackle! I am waiting on mine to be shipped as we speak. I went with a smaller drive though since the HP ones are seriously slow. I figure I will just end up replacing it soon anyways. I hope this one does as well for me as my current one. HP has been good to me so far. It will be nice having an Nvidea card now. Gave up on trying to get the ATI stuff to work. The HP ZV5000Z also comes with Nvidea and is priced a little lower if your on a budget.

go to install packages and search for acpi install both acpi and apm

Try to find something with a vid card other than ATI. ATI cards have very little support under Linux.

In the console do the following... su root urpmi kdeutils-common then go to the control panel under boot and make sure acpi is enabled restart the computer, once rebooted go to configure your desktop and then check in the power control laptop battery should now be functional and the control panel present <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Hi everyone! Was hoping my first post here could have been one of victory but I am honestly getting my butt kicked! I am hoping someone might be able to give me some assiistance with this but if not, atleast I can vent for a moment. Here is my story... 1. downloaded Mandrake 10.0 (4 disks) 2. easy install on my laptop with most major components working 3. once settled in, notice laptop won't power down on it's own and no battery monitor 4. using boot control panel I enable ACPI and reboot 5. laptop now turns off on it's own but still no battery monitor 6. check for battery monitor applet option at panel-none shown 7. check for battery under KDE power control-none (just monitor) 8. type acpi -d in konsole and get both battery temp and state of charge 9. check for related RPMs on disks-find none 10. check lilo.conf for ACPI and find none-add ACPI=on to appropriate lines-no change Linux 10.0 ISOs-free Time installing and troubleshooting-free Loss of large clumps of hair due to ACPI-priceless AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa [end rant]
