Yeh Silversurfer60, that deals with the problem, as David mentioned before. I immediately went to the errata page, but it doesn't mention how to resolve the problem once an install is made. I was able to get the user UID changed, but not the gid or groups. From all I've read, I'm suppose to change them, too. When I open up firefox in console, this is the message: id: cannot find name for group ID 500 [kieth@host-001 ~]$ Here's the info: # groupmod -g 10001 kieth [root@host-001 ~]# id kieth uid=10001(kieth) gid=500 groups=500 [root@host-001 ~]# How can I change the gid and groups?

OK, I changed the user ID. I asked the question above before I googled. I used this command: # usermod -u 10001 kieth I set it at 10001 since guest was 10000.

Yep David, that was it. :) $ firefox LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library libXt.so [libXt.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory] LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library libXext.so [libXext.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory] LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so [/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32] I checked in MCC, and I was listed as 500 and guest as 10000. Firefox still has some problems, but any idea on how to change my user ID? I didn't find a way in MCC.

OK Ken, I edited the file but it didn't resolve the problem: # cat /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 localhost With firefox, I still get the same results in console: $ firefox _IceTransSocketUNIXConnect: Cannot connect to non-local host localhost.localdomain _IceTransSocketUNIXConnect: Cannot connect to non-local host localhost.localdomain (firefox:4307): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager: Could not open network socket. Could this problem have something to do with my internet connection? I found this definition on the internet:

Every time I open a browser, I get strange (strange to me!) messages. Any idea how to correct the problem? 8. Well, I had to open OpenOffice before I wanted, but it all went well. The problem was an un-recovered document.
  9. When trying to open OpenOffice, I get the message:"Either another instance of OpenOffice.org is accessing your personal settings or your personal settings are locked. Simultaneous access can lead to inconsistencies in your personal settings. Before continuing, you should make sure user 'kieth' closes OpenOffice.org on host 'localhost.localdomain'. How do I do it? I have nothing running. I even turned off my computer, but I still get the message. In console, with the command ps -aux, I have the following, but I do not see OpenOffice. 10. You might just have to play around with your mixer configuration. Just keep changing it until everything works. This is how I resolved my problem in both Mandriva 2009 and 2010.
  11. I know scarecrow is not a great lover of PulseAudio, but others seem to like it. Me, I have no opinion. What ever gives me sound is fine with me. You would think, though, that there would be a better way to resolve the problem. I suppose as PulseAudio and the others are developed, we will see fewer and fewer problems like this. I know things have really come a long way with Mandrake/Mandriva since I started using it!
  12. OK, I think I got everything working. I had to remove nspluginwrapper, plus do the other things on the 2010.0 errata page for firefox. In MCC, I set the sound configuration for alsa (the default driver). I also had to enable pulseAudio. To be honest, I'm really not sure what I did to make it all work! I just kept changing configurations/combinations in MCC sound configuration and KMix. Kieth
  13. Thank you SilverSurfer60 for directing me to the 2010.0 errata page. This might be hard to believe, but I was reading it everyday waiting for something to be said about the videos in Firefox. I must have skipped a day before writing this post, and that was the day something was written there! Anyway, I now have the videos working, but no sound. I think it is just getting the right combination worked out in my mixer, but I'm not sure. I was able to get skype sound working, but not the sound in Fox News. Since we talk to the kids often, via skype, I wanted to get sound there working. By doing that, sound at Fox News bit the dust. To get sound in skype, I had to disable pulseaudio in MCC. I started Firefox in Console, and here are the complaints: I would think it's related, but I cannot listen to the radio in RealPlayer, either. There's no sound. The plugins I have for Firefox are (about:plugins in the url bar - as Ian said): Any idea as to the problem? Thanks, Kieth
  14. I've been tinkering around with my Firefox, trying to get it to run videos, listen to music, etc. I started it in console, and below are the results. Any idea what I can do? 15. Yeah, for sure. I hated thinking about getting more memory or another computer. Thanks to whomever put [solved] in the title bar!! Thanks for all the advice and help. Kieth
  16. Whew, I got it fixed. After I had checked the memory strip, it was registering only one strip instead of 2. The computer would boot on the good one, so I switched them around and put in only the bad one, and the computer wouldn't boot up. So I rigorously cleaned the contacts on the bad strip, and that solved the problem!!! [kieth@host-001 ~]$ free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1025732 730628 295104 0 19000 399516 -/+ buffers/cache: 312112 713620 Swap: 4088500 0 4088500 Thanks for the help, Kieth
  17. Well Ian, you're right. It looks like my memory strip burned out. I will try again later, but even when I switch the two strips, the computer will not start, but "complains".

  19. :woops: After reading what Ian and Arctic said, I had doubts. I was sure I had I installed a 64 bit system: [kieth@host-001 ~]$ uname -a Linux host-001.homenet.telecomitalia.it 2.6.31.5-server-1mnb #1 SMP Fri Oct 23 01:19:00 EDT 2009 x86_64 AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+ GNU/Linux and I had a hard time believing I had installed the wrong kernel, so . . . I opened my box and I found my error. It's called an OE (operator error!). I only have 2 strips of 512 memory installed! Sorry. I guess I was only hoping to have 4 GB instead of 1! The fact that I was convinced I had 4 GB is the reason why I wanted to install a 64 bit system! Oh well, so much for pride. After this, who can have it! Now I guess I can alter my original question. The slowness of my system, could it be caused from the fact that I ONLY have ONE GB of memory? When I talk about slowness, I mean, for example, the mouse sometimes moves in a "jerky" fashion, switching desktops takes too long, and it takes longer than before for a menu to pop up. I do usually have at least 3 programs up and running at the same time (OpenOffice, Firefox, and Thunderbird). I will often have more, too. I did not have this problem with 2009 Spring - 32 bit. Thanks (and sorry for the OE!), Kieth
  20. Yeh I'm sure, but what command would I give in Konsole to give that info?
  21. Just a curiosity. Since everything is running slowly in my new 2010.0 x86_64 KDE clean install, I was wondering if the memory usage could be part of the problem. I found the following commands on the internet, and I was wondering if you could tell me if my 4 GB of memory is being used correctly. Thanks, Kieth [kieth@host-001 ~]$ vmstat procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- -system-- ----cpu---- r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa 1 0 123912 15884 19124 360316 3 15 146 114 280 576 82 14 3 1 [kieth@host-001 ~]$ free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1001 976 25 0 18 340 -/+ buffers/cache: 617 384 Swap: 3992 122 3870 [kieth@host-001 ~]$ free -t -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1001 973 28 0 18 340 -/+ buffers/cache: 614 387 Swap: 3992 122 3870 Total: 4994 1095 3898 [kieth@host-001 ~]$ dmesg | grep ^Memory: Memory: 1018600k/1048256k available (3709k kernel code, 452k absent, 29204k reserved, 2734k data, 612k init) [moved from Everything Linux by spinynorman]
  22. Well, what I did was just click the auto-detect button to see what the options were. There wasn't 2010.0, so I presumed that it would not detect my system correctly.
  23. OK, all done. Thanks. I first used the dual cd, but it didn't read my video card/modem correctly. Then I downloaded the x86_64 cd, installed it, and everything went well. Once EasyURPMI gets version 2010.0, I can add the plf repos to my system. Thanks, Kieth
  24. Yeh, I knew I didn't explain myself well enough when I didn't get the answer I was looking for. :) A clean install using what method - the Free cd? If I do that, would I then get any propriety drivers I need through the repos? Since this is the first time that Mandriva has detected my video card correctly, hopefully the Free disk can do the same!
