    Hello Gowator, Thanks for coming back to help me. As you can see from my post, I was able to get rid of eth9. Anyway, yesterday I called my ISP technitions and complained about being disconnected. They are supposed to let me know if it is their problem. I originally thought it was, but then I began to have doubts. That's why I wrote a post here. After reading your post, I tried to connect and update some files through MCC.     I am still having problems with my ethernet connection. It will not stay up. After connecting, and while downloading files, after a couple of minutes it just quits, even though the modem is still connected to the phone line. In terminal, I typed adsl-status, while downloading, and after it quit. Below are the results. It will not let me re-connect until I re-boot the computer.   3. With your help, I was able to get my ethernet modem (LAN) connected. Only 1 problem, it doesn't stay connected. After just a couple of minutes, "looses" contact with the internet. It doesn't seem to be the ISP because I did not have the problem with Windows98. In terminal, I type adsl-start. After a moment it states that I'm connected. Then after a couple of minutes, I can no longer load any pages. In terminal I type adsl-status, and it states that I am still connected. Below is some file information.   5. I'm up and going!!! Thanks! I used your link, followed the instructions, and now it all works. Sorry I did not get back sooner, but I was having problems with my ISP, and could not sign in, even on W98. I called them up, and was finally able to get the problem resolved. I do have three questions though. 1) When I start the computer, it still says OK to eth0:9, with the DNS address I posted earlier. Of course it takes a while before it finally goes to eth0:9, because it tries alot with eth0. Is there anyway I could change that? 2) I followed the instructions on the link you listed, which worked great. To sign in, it has me give the command, in root, adsl-start. Is this different than pppoe? 3) Is there a way to make a link on my desktop to start adsl-start, and adsl-stop? Again, thank you very much for helping me. I really appreciate it. Kieth

After that it states "OK" Should I change the IP address to the one you gave previously? I also have another question. How do I get pppoe working? Once the modem is up and going, how do I get signed onto the internet? Gowator mentioned the lights on the modem. There are 5. PWR is green, Diag is not on, LAN is green, ACT is not on, and DSL is a flashing green. It flashes fast, then slow. I have no idea what this means. Thanks Kieth

  9. I recently installed a Typhoon Speednet High Speed PCI card (10/100Mbps) and an Ericsson Hm210 Ethernet modem. Seeing as how I'm not too good with computers, I can't get them to work. Therefore, I once again am calling upon my friends at MandrakeUsers.org for help. Everything works OK with Windows98. Since I read some of the previously posted problems/answers, I know some of the files I should show. I would appreciate any help you could give me to get me "up and running". There are 2 things you must keep in mind, though. 1) I'm not too good with computers, so I would appreciate any explainations in very simple language, 2) I do not even know how an ethernet modem is suppose to work.   10. I have installed an ethernet modem (using a card, not usb). I'm afraid I just do not know how to use it. It works with Windows98, so I know everything is hooked up OK. With W98, there is not a number to dial to log in, just a program (supplied with the modem), that sends my username and password to my server site. How do I log in with Linux? I have Mandrake 9.2.     Just a silly question. The other day a friend stated that with the proper software, it would be possible to read dvds with my regular cdrom player, since the method of reading the disk is the same (laser). Is this possible? If so, I could save me the money and not buy a dvd reader. Thanks, Kieth

In another option, "PNP/PCI Configuration", there are various choices.   15. I tried to install an ethernet card, "Typhoon Speednet High Speed PCI Card", but have only had problems. After installing it, and re-booting, my screen would go blank when I should be seeing the pretty blue screen and all the icons. I thought I would first dis-able plug and play, but I do not know how. I went into Bios, (Windsows 98), but there is not an option, "Plug and Play - enable/disable". java script:emoticon('B)') How do I disable it? Thanks, Kieth
  16. Ok! Now, after my login screen (when I have to choose between Windows 98 and Linux), the screen is perfect. Thanks. I do have three other questions, though. 1) If I wanted to have a 800x600 screen, what numbers would I write? 2) To make the correction in lilo, and not just in grub, what file would I change? 3) The screen(s) before I get to choose between Windows 98 and Linux, is still messed up. If I choose Windows 98, all the splash screens are messed up. How could I correct this? When the computer is first turned on, and it looks for the hard drives, etc., everything is OK. Then after that, it is not correct. Even if I go into BIOS, that whole page is off center and too large. In what file do I need to add the vga "code"? Thanks again. I really appreciate your help.   17. I am trying to set up an ADSL modem, and I need to set up the Makefile to point to the kernel source. Only one problem, I do not know where it is, or what it would look like if I saw it!! I am using Mandrake 9.2. Would someone tell me where this source is. As an example, the Makefile states that it might be in /usr/src/linux/include. I need to change this to point to the kernel source. Thanks. Kieth

  19. I have a new Unicorn ADSL modem, but am unable to understand what I am suppose to do!! :) Would someone be so kind as to interprete the instructions for me. The read me file says: INTRODUCTION: The software for the UNICORN ADSL PCI card consists of two loadable drivers, the unicorn_atm.o and unicorn_pci.o. The unicorn driver is a standard Linux ATM driver, that performs segmentation and reassembly (SAR) and flow control. The unicorn_pci driver contains the ADSL modem software and hardware related functions. It has been tested with the Linux 2.4.x kernels. Note that to use PPPoE, PPPoA or RFC2684 protocols, the kernel may need to be patched. COMPILATION: To compile the drivers, unzip and untar the file. In the unicorn directory you will find the two subdirectories unicorn_atm and unicorn_bus. You may compile the drivers based on the include files in the kernel source or standard kernel include files. Set the variable KERNELDIR in the Makefile's to point to your kernel sources if the first option in chosen. If you choose the latter, you may need to copy the contents of the kernel source "include/net" directory into "/usr/include/net/". Go into these subdirectories and do a "make" and a "make install". If the compile option "USE_HW_TIMER" is set, the performance is increased, but the CPU load increased. Use the same compiler as you use when compiling the linux kernel. The driver has been tested using gcc-2.96, gcc-2.95.2, gcc-2.91.66 and gcc 3.0.3. INSTALLATION: To start the ADSL software, do a "modprobe unicorn_pci". Check in the syslog that the drivers are started OK. The ADSL line should come up automatically. The status can also be checked using the "proc" interface (/proc/net/atm/UNICORN\:0". SHOWTIME in the log or in the status means that ADSL connction is up and ATM cells may be transmitted and received. Depending on your network setup, you will need additional software as with any other ADSL ATM card. For bridged ethernet (RFC2684), the br2684.o module and brctl is needed. For PPPoE, any pppoe client over the bridged interface (nas0) should work (Roaring Penguin pppoe client has been tested). The scripts directory contains some example startup scripts. Bridged (RFC2684) and PPP over Ethernet: Depending on your kernel, you may need to patch the kernel and enable the option "RFC1483/2684 Bridged protcols" under "Networking options". Also ATM support needs to be enabled. Also the user space daemon "brctl" is needed. Instructions on how to apply the patch and the brctl and patch sources can be found at http://www.zoftware.org/adsl-pppoe. PPP over ATM: For PPP over ATM, the module pppoatm.o is needed, together with the pppd plugin pppoatm.so and a version of pppd that supports plugins. Currently version ppp-2.4.0b2 supports PPPoATM plugins. A patched version ready for PPPoATM can be found at http://www.sourceforge.net/. PPPoATM specific pppd options: llc-encaps: use LLC encapsulation for PPPoATM vc-encaps: use VC multiplexing for PPPoATM (default) MODULE PARAMETERS: Some ADSL paramters can be controlled by setting the moule paramters. unicorn_pci.o: -------------- ActTimeout: Timeout in ms on the duration of the activation state. ActivationMode: This parameter sets in what mode the ADSL modem should be activated. ANSI mode is 1, G.lite is 2, G.dmt is 4 and MULTI mode is 3. If you know what mode your DSLAM operates in, use this mode. If not select either ANSI or MULTI mode. DownstreamRate: The maximum downstream rate in Kbit/sec. AutoActivation: Set this to 1 if you your ADSL modem to start auotmatically (default 1). DebugLevel: To debug the driver, set this to a value different from 0 and enable DEBUG when compiling. MswDebugLevel: 0 - High level, all traces enabled, 1 - Medium level, info and warnings enabled, 2 - Low level, only warnings and errors are traced. LCD_Trig: Persistency time (in msec) of Loss of Cell Deliniation defects before disorderly shutdown (15000 default). LCD_LOF_Trig: Persistency time (in msec) of Loss of Signal and Loss of Frame defects before disorderly shutdown (5000 default). TrainingDelay: Delay in msec used in training sequence.   20. I have a mouse! Thanks. I installed the cursor themes, as you mentioned. This gave me a cursor at times. Then while in Mandrake Control Center, under System, that I could "Choose the display manager". I choose XDM instead of KDM, which then gave me a "visible" mouse. Thanks. Kieth
  21. Well, I made sure there was a / in front of dev, but still no luck. I wrote my X86Config-4 file exactly like yours. I also unpluged the other usb devices, rebooted, but nothing. I was booting in lilo, so I changed to grub. I was using KDE desktop, so I changed to gnome. Still, there is no mouse. I went into Mandrake Control Center and changed to a 2 button standard mouse.   22. No mouse again! I just installed Mandrake 9.2, and I was not able to get the mouse working. Actually, it works, I just can't see it! It changes the icon colors when it passes over them, so it is usable, "sorta". I had the problem with Mandrake 9.0 and 9.1, but was able to get it working by doing an upgrade with Mandrake 8.2 (without installing anything). Anyway this time I can't get it working. I would appreciate any help so I can see it.   24. I'm really not sure it's actually called a splash screen. But when linux is loading, or starting, there are various lines telling you what the program is doing. Well, that "page" is so large, that the last line is below the monitor screen. Also, the margin on the left is way too large. Kieth
