  2. Well, this is what I tried to do. I disconnected my 56K modem, (as Pzatch recommended) booted up the computer, went into MCC and reconfigured my internet connection. First I configured my LAN card, using dhcp. Then I configured my adsl connection, using again dhcp. Then I went into terminal and typed in "ifconfig", "adsl-start", "ifconfig", then after about 5 minutes, "ifconfig" again. Please note that with the first "ifconfig" command, there is no pppoe connection, but after I used the command "adsl-start", I have a pppoe connection, even if it states I do not have one! Then with konqueror, I tried to open up an internet connection, but nothing. I'm not connected. Then I typed "ifconfig" again, and guess what, no pppoe connection! It disappeared all by itself! Any ideas as to the problem?   4. I have tried to use dhcp before, but I thought I would try again, then give the results. In MCC, I launched the wizard. I used auto detection. It found my 2 modems. I choose "LAN connection - ethernet card(s) detected". I then choose "Automatic IP (bootp/dhcp/zeroconf). I then rebooted the system. On bootup, it could not bring up "interface eth0". It then choose eth0:9, stating, "Claiming ownership of address 127.255.255.255." Then in console, I tried to connect. Below are the results, and some more configuration files. By the way, it just occured to me. With my first entry, I might have been connected to the internet with my regular modem when I checked #ifconfig.   5. I thought I would try again to see if I could get my adsl Ethernet modem up and working. I have tried various "tactics" on several occasions, but still no luck. I do have a little more information, though, that I hope will give someone an idea of why I'm having problems. Actually, the computer communicates with the internet, as net_monitor shows data coming and going. When I try to connect with net_monitor, it states: "Connection failed. Verify your connection in the MCC." It seems as if my server allows me to connect (and my phone bill shows that I was "connected," too), but Mandrake doesn't seem to know I have permission from my server. Knoppix works, as I am using it now. When I try to connect, using adsl-start, in terminal, the responce is: # adsl-start ................TIMED OUT /usr/sbin/adsl-start: line 194: 2855 Terminated $CONNECT "$@" >/dev/null 2>&1 When I try to connect using MCC, this is the process and response I get: 1) I choose auto detection. It finds 2 connections: normal modem on port ttySO, and a LAN connection. Yes, I do have 2 modems. 2) I choose "adsl connection". 3) I choose to connect with pppoe. 4) I insert the data: DNS, username, password. 5) I choose "no" at the question, "Connect at boot?". 6) I choose "yes" at the question, "Connect to internet now?" At this point, the lights on my modem flash, net_monitor shows data coming and going. Then the message comes up: "Your system doesn't seem to be connected to the internet." Following are some of the configuration files I have. In Knoppix, I am able to connect without any difficulty. Therefore I have also included some information from the Knoppix configuration system. Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated.   7. While trying to watch movies on Xine, it does not run smoothly, but stops, for just a moment, then goes on. It's a "jerking" movement. I am running Mandrake 9.2 on a Celeron 700. I would presume the problem is that the cpu is too busy, but of course I do not know. Any ideas on how I can remedy the problem? Thanks, Kieth

    I was finally able to get a Knoppix cd. In fact I am now connected to the internet with it, using also my ethernet modem. I have looked to try and find out what the connection configurations are, but I cannot find them. It just lets me re-configure the connection, without telling me what it is. Any idea the file I must look at to see it? Or any idea as to what I can do to get my ethernet working under Mandrake 9.2? Thanks, Kieth
  11. Go into Mandrake Control Center (Choose Configuration, enter your root password and then press Enter). Then choose System. In System, you'll find various icons. Press "MenuDrake helps you change what programs are shown on the menu", which is the top left one. Then you can add and delete whatever items you want. You could also "right click" on the task bar. Choose configure panel. In layout, you can change your setup. Kieth

  13. Try putting your Mandrake CD1 installation disk in your cdrom drive, then re-boot. Do an update (not installation). Then when you get the page that asks to accept all the configurations, re-configure your internet connection. That should do it. Kieth

    I'll probably try Knoppix, but I have to wait until I can buy it at the newstand (which is where I would find it in Italy). It might take a couple of weeks or more before it comes out, though.     I went into MCC and re-configured my LAN card. I did not put in an IP address. Now when I boot up, it does not OK my eth0, but gives me again eth0:9, assigning it this number: 127.255.255.255. It isn't just while I'm downloading files when it stops, though. It's also while I am just browsing. It acts as if it can't handle too much downloading (or browsing) without taking a break to rest.     I installed a Typhoon Speednet High Speed PCI Card (10/100Mbps). To that, I connected an Alcatel adsl Modem (Alcatel Speed Touch Home). For the modem, it states: hardware specifications: -LAN interface -10BaseT (RJ-45), optionally ATMF (RJ-45) -WAN interface: ADSL line (RJ-11) -Physical specifications: . . . -Power requirements: . . . Line specifications. -Up to 8 Mbps downstream -Up to 800 kbps upstream -ADSL standards compliant: . . . Protocol specifications: -Bridging (RFC 1483) -PPP/ATM (RFC 2364) using PPTP -Support for PPPoE (RFC 2516) On the back of the modem, there are 2 connections to go to the computer, which are labled: 1) 10Base T/MDI-X (which is where I have it connected), and 2) ATMF-25. The modem is connected to the phone line, by means of a filter. That way we can still use the phone. I also have another modem (which is what I'm using now). It's an external 56,000Bps Data/Fax/Voice modem. At the moment, I can't think of what the connection is on the back of the computer. :woops: It is not a usb, but the small pin connection. Kieth

    I just received a note from my ISP. Briefly (as I must translate it from Italian), it states: "We have not found any problms with your connection ADSL. The same type of connections with Mux ADSL analogs, work fine. The problem could be the distribution you are using. For instance, for Mandrake, there exists a specific package pre the ethernet modem, called SPEEDTOUCH, on the installation cds. You must realize that, for browsing, Linux uses browsers such as Mozzilla (which is the same as Netscape) and Kongueror, depending on the desktop you are using. Therefore you must determine if the browser is blocking or the modem, and if it is the last, you may update the proper packets to resolve the problem." Kieth

    Gowator, I would have written sooner, but I have had a bad case of the flu, so I could not even think straight. This is what I did before your post: I tried using urpmi-updates in terminal (in root), and it still cut off after a short time. In terminal, I also tried adsl-start, but it still did not stay connected long. I also used tkpppoe, and even though it hooks up immediately with the ISP, I still cannot browse too long. What I did after your post: I tried to find, in /var/log/messages, for some sort of pattern. I did not see any. There were a couple of messages that I saw often, though. "localhost kernel: eth0: Too much work at interrupt, IntrStatus=0x0010" "/etc/hotplug/net.agent: NET unregister event not supported." "Serial link appears to be disconnected." The problem is not just with updates, but even with browsing. This entry: "Feb 3 21:30:58 localhost su(pam_unix)[1857]: session closed for user root" can be explained (I think) from the fact that tkpppoe (and kppp) hase root as the user. I changed my security of tkppoe to none, and my computers security to poor (from standard), and the problem still exists. I used tkppoe, and connected to the ISP, but I did not open any browser or do anything on the internet. I just waited. Well, nothing happened. After about 10 mininutes, I opened up konqueror and went to www.mandrakeusers.org. Then I waited. After the page was completely loaded, I opened another page. After it was completed loaded, I opened another page. No problems. Therefore I decided to do an update with MCC. I was able to update a couple of small .rpm files, but when I tried a large file, it stopped. I stopped tkpppoe and then tried to re-connect, but it would not let me. I can only re-connect after I re-boot my computer. This is the reason I think it is a Linux problem. I then changed my security level back to standard, and repeated the above procedure, with the same result. Therefore it does not seem to be that. I have talked a couple of times to a technician with my ISP, and they do not know what is wrong, but are trying to find if it is their problem. I do not have problems with it in Windows98. Kieth
