  1. There have been bugs in all Linux distros that I've used and Mandriva 2006 doesn't make it to the top buggiest ones. Of course that depends on what parts of the OS we each use most.

Right now I'm having some problems with Fedora Core 5 related to apps and menu entries,

but I have no problems at all with USB devices, which caused a real headache for me in Mandriva 2006

Oh, and, scarecrow, I agree with you about Kubuntu and KDE :))

  2. nono, I was talking about totem and alt+f2 ;)

but I was wondering if there is an automatic command that does this, like there is in Mandriva (update menus)

    ------

humm, when I try to launch "totem' through command run, it tries to launch "totem-xine" instead, and then says there is no such totem-xine.

there is a conflict between these two,

and I know that the correct command is just "totem", not "totem-xine"

p.s. sorry if this sounds confusing, I'm in the middle of a work and my thoughts are a bit messed up right now

  3. Hi!

I have a few programs installed that don't show up in the kmenu,

the kmenuedit app does not have any update menus function like Mandriva menu editor did when it searched for unlisted programs (there was also that update menus command).

Is there any command in FC5 that would update my menus?

I suspect that because of that I also can not launch the program through alt+f2 run program call, because it then says that there is no such program (could not find executable), although the program runs if I launch it from terminal (totem in this case).

    ----------

oh, and since I made a thread, one more question:

What FC5 tool to use to reformat, mount, unmount, resize, etc my partitions? Is there something similar to disk drake?

    Thanks!

  4. I'm boring. I put a lot of work into getting a desktop just the way I want and then I leave it until I'm tired of it. :D

You're not the only one. I've reached perfection in my desktop and haven't changed the look (including wallpaper) since about june last year. :D

edit: ooh, look, I have 5 penguins now!

  5. nah, I installed the codecs, mp3 support, etc,

but there seems to be a problem with that xine plugin which other players use...

although the win32 codec rpm is for FC4 (which I have now removed, but the players still crash).

maybe I should really wait for the w32codec FC5 file, but the absence of it shouldn't make my players crash with an error output pointing to xine...

    but maybe I'm wrong,

I don't really know how they relate between each other

  6. Hi! I have a few annoying problems with multimedia players on FC5,

namely - players crash when I want to launch some specific files.

I'm talking about Kaffeine and Totem,

Mplayer works for the most part, but sometimes has weird problems too.

Strangely enough kplayer which is based on mplayer has always worked, but I don't like it,

it's ugly and not nice to use.

    Here are more details:

(all outputs are followed by a program crash)

What I get from Kaffeine when try to open one .avi

$ kaffeine: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.1.1/xineplug_decode_ff.so: undefined symbol: pp_get_context

    Another file in Totem

    $ totem

    ** (totem:6065): WARNING **: Couldn't find themed icon for "panel-screenshot"

** (totem:6065): WARNING **: Trying to connect to an older version of the GNOME screensaver
totem: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.1.1/xineplug_decode_ff.so: undefined symbol: pp_get_context

    Help?

Maybe I should install another xine from an earlier FC4 version, or maybe try some Mandriva package?

  7. There´s no other way to do it because some icons are not changeable (like k-menu) and it´s a lot of work doing it for each icon change?

Well, if you only want to change a few icons, like K-menu and Desktop, then it's a few seconds job.

Open Konqueror as root, open up /usr/share/icons folder, look for the default icon folder (it can be named crystalsvg),

then change the icons you desire, but keep the old filename.

  8. KDE, Gnome and other Desktop environments and Window managers, like Fluxbox, IceWM, FXCE, etc...

But the difference isn't between the looks, because you can make Slackware and Mandrake desktops look identical.

The difference for the most part is in how distros manage and install software packages. There are 3 main camps: .rpm (Fedora, Mandrake, Suse, and others) ; debian style (Debian, Ubuntu, Kanotix) ; from source (Gentoo, Arch (?) I'm not sure about arch).

Each has its' pros and cons, it's for you to decide which suit you best.

Then there's a big difference on how you administer the system, i.e., what tools you use and how much knowledge you have to have.

At one end there are the idiot-proof Windows wanabee clones like Linspire, Xandros, and, dare I say, Mepis,

and, while easy, for the most part they are annoying for people who know what they want to do, but the limited GUI config tools don't let them or are just getting in the way.

Then there are generally easy to use, but not restricting distros like Fedora Core, Mandriva, Ubuntu (Mandriva being the easyest of these, imo).

SuSE falls somewhere in between the previous two (YAST, I'm looking at you).

The other extreme is Gentoo, Arch, Slackware where most things are done by hand through config files (I haven't really looked at slack for a long time).

Of course there's a whole lot of other distros with specific purposes in mind,

those that you can boot from floppy, live cd's, diagnostic distros, router ones, multimedia, etc, etc

    p.s. I haven't used Yellow Dog, so can't answer.

    ----------------

disclaimer: These are my personal views and any fanatic of a specific distro that is going to attack me because of something I said in my post I'm going to hold back with a heavy stick.

  9. I have an ADSL modem, but I had no problems with Azureus a while ago on Mandriva, though I don't remember whether the problem first started on Mandriva or Fedora Core :/

Could it be because of some Fedora network configuration? If so, then it would be quite weird, because, as I said, the standart bittorrent client works at full speed as it should with zero problems.

  10. Open up a terminal su to root and type (I think it's better to do it as root): glxgears

    ->

    su root

    glxgears

    --------

You should get well over a 1000 (1800>) if gl is enabled.

I may be wrong about the number, but it should run smootlhy and crispy

p.s. Have you installed 3d drivers for your graphics card?

If you haven't, then you don't have hardware GL enabled.

glxgears are to test the gl performance if you have installed the 3d drivers and you have a suspicion that they are not working properly
