  1. Most of what's eating your space is in /usr (most likely), but I doubt you can make enough room to effectively move it. How big is your /usr directory?
  2. Tried 1.2.10 and many other fixes, I surrender for now, maybe a new build will fix this down the road.
  3. I've tried almost every fix this board has to offer on XMMS, in the end I just removed it, between Totem and mPlayer I am pretty well covered, and it just wasn't worth the effort at one point. Of course, I was never a big WinAmp fan, so it wasn't a biggy to me, if you are then I hope someone here can shed some light for you.

    Firefox Install Help

The FireFox installer for the current build assumes you only want to make it available to a specific user unless you put it in /usr/bin, if you are the primary/only user I would just put it in /home/username/firefox, which is what I did. Of course you can set it up so it will be available to all users if you need to.

    Solved

Follow this guide from this very site, it works like a champ.
  6. Chipset? Boot order? What devices on what IDE channels/positions? Cable select of jumpered master/slave?
  7. I'll second this method, I used it today while "cough" working from home :D

    Network issues

A lot of third parties buy chips and rebrand them, chances are good that just becasuse sticker on the card or an entry in the Windows device manager said one thing that the actual chipset might be another. A good number of older 3rd part cards out there have DEC chips, so don't sweat the driver issue so much, give us the basic of your network configuration and general hardware set up.

    Disable Num Lock?

That was it, thanks for the quick response.
  10. I have a small form factor box and just got a mini/laptop style keyboard. All is great, but Mandrake keeps turning Num Lock back on and I want it off for good (no num pad on this keyboard). It's turned off in BIOS so where can I kill it in the Drake.
  11. I don't see that in Lilo, where would it be? Had some time to look this evening, would that be the splash=auto line n bootconfig?
  12. Yep, that killls the GUI stuff but leaves a balck "Mandrake Stars" background. Anyone know what file to edit so I can shift that back to my soothing blue?
  13. bvc, I agree with a lot of your points on this topic but you can't put the "money" geni back in the bottle. It just isn't going to happen, and as many governments, the U.S. judiciary and many companies start looking at Linux there will be those looking to profit because of it. And when you look at what Red Hat (5% total earning dedicated to OSS projects), IBM (countless contributions), HP (Mandrake desktops, they gave Bruce Perens a job for a while, dirty hippy that he is) and many others have contributed I think it becomes clear that it's not all bad. If what Linux really needs to succeed is users then the corporate desktop is the key. And companies who support corporate computing are profit driven. It's up to us to keep them honest and push for them to comply to standards. There isn't going to be a sudden shift to a purely "free and open" Linux distro for the corporate space, so we should all just settle in to the routine that on occaision the "profit-driven" distros are going to need a slapping about the head. I'm up for, who's with me sick of the man keeping us down
  14. You nailed that right on the head, and when you mentioned the fact NT4 made it through the process you were reading my mind. It's a waste of resources and I'll bet the only reason RH is after it is to prevent MS spin doctoring of the issue. But it means virtually nothing in the real world, I had a contract where the client wanted us to get as close as possible to the spec for his new Win 2K servers, we tried for several weeks but patching made it virutally impossible so eventually even the client saw what a waste of time it was.
  15. I hope they do it, I am a Corel (specifically a WordPerfect fan) from way back. In fact, one of my earliest exposures to Linux was Corel Linux, ahhh, memories....
  16. Hmmm, at work now so I can't look, it may also depend on your icon set having all the correct sizes of icons, I know the option is greyed out on some of mine and not others, but I don't recall which?
  17. Go to /Look and Feel/Icons and look at the advanced settings, there are some options but I haven't played with them too much yet.

    Lexmark X73

:D I have to agree, when MCC works as designed it is superlative, but when it fails it does so in a very Hindenbergh like manner. It doesn't take long to train users to just start skipping MCC and going to more "traditional" tools. Perhaps this is the clandestine plan of the Mandrake team???
  19. When I was using Red Hat 7 and 8 at work I swore by Gnome, but I have to say for now I am in to KDE, very pleased with the way it has progressed and very speeedy. Of course, that could change with little provocation, but for now I am happy in KDE-land.
  20. Well, I finished my clean install a little while ago, same resluts with the same methods. On the bright side my performance is much better after the fresh install, so it was well worth the effort. I'll file a report with nViidia this weekend so it's officially documented somewhere and post a link back for you to do the same Green.
  21. I'm not sure what's up with that either, if I set mine to "1" then it puts my card in PCI mode, but "2" works perfectly and neither setting has caused me to crash. This is just one of those things where you have to find what works for you and not worry about it, I do think I'll submit a report to nVidia about my experience so they can update thier readme, and would suggest you do the same. I'll see if I can find a support link for us to use later when I get some time.
  22. Thanks Swift, my solution is at hand, gonna' back up everything to another PC on the network tonight and wipe it clean, sometimes a clean start works best for me. As for backups, a cp -p to another directory always works if you have the room (and as bvc mentioned, you can tar them and save some space), or to a drive on another computer, or to a CD/DVD if you have a writer, a USB key, etc... Of course the size of the files and whether you need to maintain permissions, etc... Good luck. If this is confusing just ask questions, but one of the many things Linux does well is allow you the opporutnity to protect your data.
  23. That's the problem though, I already have a /usr partition and disk drake won't create another one, and won't unmount the current one because files are in use. Actually, this is a moot issue, I have decided to blow away my install and do a clean one, when I set up Mandrake last weekend it was my first desktop Linux box in a long time so during set up I chose way more stuff than I needed/really want on my hard drive so I could see what was new. I also did a little expiramenting and have made a couple messes, and of course made my life much harder until I discovered easy URPMI. So I think I will wipe it and fix the file system that way. Mandrake should change thier default partitioning shceme when anyone checks the "Game Station" option, UT2K4 is well over 5 gigs installed alone.
  24. Anyone know of a way to resize a physical /usr partition, can't do it at init 1 because files are still in use so you can't unmount it. Could I boot from the install CD or from a Live CD and resize it or am I stuck doing a fresh install to get the file system set up the way I want it (boo-booed it up during install but everything else is set just right so I hate to blow it all away if I don't have to).
  25. Okay, anyone have an idea what a "good" number is in glxgears, say for an Athlon XP 2000+/512MB/GeForce4 MX 440SE? I don't expect miracles and don't game much outside of a little Quake III and some arcade stuff, I just added the video card because the Shuttle SK41Gs inegrated video ... a ) sucks and has no acceleration at all in Linux (Savage Pro 8 DDR) b ) hits the memory bandwidth on the systme for about 15% of total performance c ) slows total systme performance by 10% d ) which also causes choppy sound e ) see a-d I am much happier with overall performance with the card in, but I always like to maximize my performance so if I can do some tweaking and get a little more juice out of it, I will. That said, TuxRacer seems smooth and I'm sure it's enough for Quake III and maybe Enemy Territory, buy still... bvc, I just noticed we are pretty close on specs and have the same card, how's the overall performance?
