  1. First of all who ever said that Linux would not be on Desktop systems in completely wrong. I'm sorry to say, but someday your going to knocked off that cloud that you are on. Have you not been paying attention to current news? PS3 is going to be shipping an hdd with Linux PRE-INSTALLED. That is P-R-E I-N-S-T-A-L-L-E-D. Linux has been making outstanding improvements in the world. Goverments are starting to look more into Linux for their computers. The U.S Health department recently made a HUGE multi-billion deal with Novell ( Makers of SUSE ). Linux is starting to be known to the world. Micheal Dell ( Owner and founder of Dell systems) Recently bought a crapload I think 11 million dollars worth of Red-Hat stock. Linux is going to be on desktops. Wether it's 1 year from now, 2 years from now or 20 years from now. I know that Linux is going to be a HUGE threat to microsoft in the future. Starting now, with this whole ps3 deal. To me and I mean this in no offence, I feel like you haven't been able to really get Linux working on your box. This is really obsurd. I know a lot of people believe that Linux won't make it, but those are people that have no hope :) I would love to be able to see where Linux might take MS off the market, which can be possible. But I don't know if it will. I personally had a few issues with Windows. I remember when the Blaster Virus came out, when I tried to conect to the internet it would not last me more than 30 seconds of a connection before my computer restarted. Do you know how frustrating it is to see something like that? Just because of some * no offence to ANYBODY * fat-lonely geek who got bored? I don't know but Linux is a great desktop. The point of Linux not having wild viruses and spyware solves most of my problems. Another thing, yes some hardware doesn't work with Linux. But please remember that Linux is OPEN SOURCE so that means that it's up to good developers to make the Linux kernel work with certain hardware. They don't go out and buy every single mobo in the world and make it work on Linux. They write the kernel to stuff that comes to them, and occationally probably doing what I just mentioned. But I'm probably wrong on this. Open source is young, it's up to people to write programs for us ( unless you know how to ). The number one reason that people go back to windows after using linux is because they don't find an equivalent to aim. Which I was able to find within 3 minutes of ever having my first Linux desktop. I think what I'm trying to say is that people are scared of Linux because they aren't being told what to do, which is what windows does. They see Linux and they can't gasp the freedom it has. The freedom to download just about every program out there for FREE instead of having to buy a monthly membership? I don't know but this for some reason really pissed me off. I'm sorry I think I should get off now. If I don't make any sence I am deeply sorry, but there is soo much information out there that shows Linux as an on going improvement. It's a moving train, that sooner or later Microsoft is going to have to face dead on. If not the world :) Oh yeah about the configuration being hard. Hmm look at Linspire. Everyday more and more scripts are enhaced/made to improve this, and make this easier on the user. And for gentoo, dude they are coming out with a freaking GUI install. What the heck can be sweeter than that? ArchLinux is another once that you configure from a command line. They now have a live cd that does it pretty much for you.
  2. bah , fools! If you like fungus sure! For all I know all you guys have Athlets Foot!
  3. It is true. But this time I'm sure that they are working better. One it's default on the system. And it's going to run something very noob like linspire or something. But I'm sure this time they have put more developers on it, and created a more interactive action. I'm not sure if they are going be having a full desktop, it didn't go into that very much. But I'm sure that they are going to be running a Linux kernel, regardless of what front GUI they choose for it. They really didn't mention anything about a full desktop, just a main computer that can do basic stuff like playing movies , cd etc etc Another thing is that they didn't have IBM also developing PS2 Linux back in the day. Now it's IBM who let me just say is a HUGE supported of Linux. Probably one of the biggest next to HP. So IBM + Sony is a good deal. I'm sure developers are working on the whole deal. Even if they don't go with Linux, KK said that it might be the start of a new OS. Maybe light-weight OS for PS3 alone.
  4. Well I'm decided to write something on it, you can find it here. http://myhalo.org/?p=35 It's still very un complete , and the main points very unclear as I suck at writing these kinds of things. Post your comments here tho
  5. btw in ubuntu which is the one that is has the " Applications Places System" , and where is it? I have an ugly foot there right now, that looks like it's got a really bad rash. I want to change that little fungus feeding foot for a nice ubuntu small logo like the one artic has on his sig.
  6. hmm stupid person in #mandrake once told me that the icon was hard compiled and thus was not removeable. Fruits
  7. geforce 6800 Ultra, what's up wtih gforce4's are they better than my puppy?
  8. Iphitus: eh, you know me. You got me into Arch, so I'll be more than happy to give it a try for you, although I don't use Arch anymore, I was giving it some thought and might go back to it, or just to mess around with it. So if you catch me in #musb, just give me the stuff, btw I need some help with python!!!!
  9. Seems like a problem that I used to have. You can try clearning out all information from the cache. To do so go to Edit>Preferences>Privacy and click on 'Clear All' Warning his removes cookies, passwords that you have saved etc etc... When firefox starts to run slow for me, I usually do this and all the problem issues are done. Also have you tried to make firefox load faster? If not here follow this link, Firefox Speed up Don't worry I know it's for Ubuntu Linux, but just skip all the Ubuntu stuff and change the options in about:config. Hope this helps, -Luis
  10. sweet! I wonder if the playgirls will be come open source too :) Everyone can view them, modify them, and distribute them ( put the to work on the streets ) j/k this is deff nice, those nerds must have one of the coolest jobs. Maintaining the playboy website. Lol
  11. I do have to agree that I don't like gnome and how it manages it's sound. In windows, I've been able to play music at full BLAST, and then someone IMs me and it's very low, but I can still hear it. In Linux however, I have to mute the gaim sounds, because when I do so let's just say it's nothing far from blowing my speakers to shreds. Does anyone know why there is such a problem? Does it have to do with the Linux kernel, DE/WM, or gaim its self? Because I would deff. like to see it fixed in the future. I don't like sound themes my self, I do tend to find them annoying. Specially when I lisen to music, and leave the volume at full blast, then all the sudden when I log in the Ubuntu afrikano sounds come on. Scaes the crap out of me specially since I'm home alone :o
  12. lol great! that sucks I'm really disappointed in you bvc. You are nothing short of the Gnome Guru, and you dont know what the sound manager is?!? wtf! j/k lol, even the people in #gnome don't know, and they are suppose to be what the call ' developers ' if gnome doesn't have one they should comeo out with one :)
  13. While we are at it, what about sound themes?
  14. Since we are on the topic of changing themes. How does one change mouse themes? If you can make it Ubuntu specific :)
  15. This is very true DragonMage, and this is exactly why I'm thinking about returning the book. Quite frankly it is not aimed at beginners, I'm very very lost in this book. I need to get my hands on a Linux security book, or a hacking book that aims at the more beginner. I might just keep this around, and when I build the knowledge of good security I will move on it this. So far nmp or what ever it is , it's freaking awesome. How it does port scanns and OS detections. It's awesome. So if you have a book that teaches you how to crack computer and it's based at a n00b level, send the link my way and I will check it out. -Luis
  16. The book has a lot of info, quite frankly I can't soak up all of it. Which just sucks. So what I'm doing is reading an attack by attack. Taking very long breaks in between and re-reading the attacks, just to make sure that I can understand it. Like I think I said before Buffer OverFlows are the ones that I mostly had trouble with. Now it's time to learn about system scanners. I don't know much about them but hopefully I will get to understand them more, when I install them :) A lot of the info is awesome. I just hoped that they aimed at the normal Linux user, not at the geeks like some of you -Luis
  17. It's a great book , but it's not really aimed at the average Linux user. I tend to find myself not understanding much of the material. Well ... as far as all the C code goes, everthing else just sticks once I read it once or twice. Besides that I hav the summer to go, so hopefully I will be done reading the book before I got to school again. So far all I have learned is very awesome, and teaching me a lot.
  18. Hey all, Well I bought this book because I got interested in the art of cracking. So someone suggested that this book pretty much tells you how to crack if you know what material to extract. From this book I've learned soo much. I've learned things about Linux that I don't think are possible in Windows. This book does show some security flaws, but it shows a great way to counteract them. From learning what buffer overflows are to how Linux sets it's permission on files. This book is all you can possible have to really have a secure Linux System. So I'm wondering if any of you guys out there own it. And what you think about it. -Luis [moved from Security by spinynorman]
  19. I have bought " Hacking Linux Exposed 2nd Edition" and it shows all the Linux security secrets. From reading the first chapter about 4 times ( a method I use to make sure I remeber every single word in the chapter, before moving on ), Since I use ubuntu, I have sudo too, but I don't think it's too safe. The first reason is that the password for the sudo is the same as the user. So if some cracker gets your user password he also has access to the root accout ( since both passwords are the same) I've found a neat thing that crackers use to exploit passwords. One is when you log on ( gdm or kdm ) you sometimes type the password instead of the user name. So when someone greps a line in some file that I can't remember, it shows a 'FAILED LOGIN' and it usually shows your username, but in this case it shows the password. I found that neat. It's a cool way to know somones password. So I'm thinking that having sudo is not that great, because if a cracker gets the user password then the root account is vanerable and exploited. I'm I wrong, or right? I'm thinking about creating a root account, sure for safety checks. I've been able to understand a crap load form 1 chapter. Highly recommend the book to all of you out there. -Luis
  20. Yes arch is going to require you to edit a bunch of config. But it's bette than having programs that just bloat up your system. I know that ( at least for me ) I had to edit a lot of files, but I never took me more than 1 day to get everything running. I stopped using arch because of some kernel/wireless problems that I was having, and the editing of files here and there just weren't cut out for me. Although I'm thinking about returning to arch is a few months or so. As for the problems that you are having now, yes you are going to have to pretty much sorta set up your system from command line. If you are not comfortable with command line , then I would have to say that Arch may not be for you. The install guide should give you the info on what to do from your first boot. If I remeber correctly you have to set up an account and all sorts of snibble snobble. And first of all if you have a internet connection run " Pacman -Syu " which does your system magic. I love arch because it's freaking awesome pacman packaging system, it's one of the best that I have ever seen in my life. Hope you find something that you like, I know how you feel. Ask ANYONE in here that I most of gone through 5 different distros the first month that I started to use Linux. It happeneds, once your system starts running good, and not a lot of problems are coming up, you get bored. I suggest that you pick up something like web development, learning some program languages ( if you have the time ) or reading/creating some gimp stuff. I'm going to get started on that in a few weeks, just reading some gimp tuts and then creating these awesome pictures with it.
  21. I'm using xbox and Linux using the same connection. I don't understand your setup but here is mine. DSL ---> Router --> Xbox | | wireless | | --> Laptop with Ubuntu Linux If you have DSL it may require it for you to set it up as " Bridge-Mode ". I have a sprint 645 Series and my ISP is Earthlink. They gave me some instructions that I can do following telnet, and thankfully telnet is available in Linux. Then hooked up everything, set up my wireless and both work :) Anyhow, I need to get back to my halo 2 nerd party ... hehehe
  22. Ok well I guess it was the movies that I downloaded that were messed up :) I downloaded some other movies from all kinds of format, .wmv .mgp .avi etc etc , and all worked! Thanks guys I think that solves my problems!!!!!!!!!!!! For now
  23. I must of been seeing things. The speed is normal now. I have about nothing to do now :) there are some issues that I haven't got to fix yet and maybe someone else can help me again. For some reason I can't play movies that I download that are windows media player format. I sometimes get video on certain ones, but I don't get any audio on any of them. I downloaded the ' w32codecs ' package, but still it's a no go. It has nothing to do wih the video card because I can still lisen to music that I download. So far I have a full working ubuntu system. I'm still trying to figure out what else is going wrong, trying to bug track stuff. Just a warning that Kubuntu is still very very buggy. I can't run the desktop for more than 30 minutes without something crashing. But I'm sure that it's going to be fixed once woody comes out. On the good side, nothings wrong with gnome :) which is a good thing. LOL -Luis
  24. Ok well I go the problem fixed ... I think. I was refered to a post by Qchem that was talking about disble ipv6, for some reason on my system after following your steps ac, I didn't deactivate it. So this fixed the problem, and logging on to aim and xchat was as fast as it was before. But ... this morning as I was leaving to school I went to log on to aim and I saw that slowness come back, so I'm going to have to check it out when I get home. I only followed 1 step of the whole tutorial by artic, and that was replacing the packages, I think now that I must make the rest of the changes. -Luis
  25. hehe I don't know I'm not in the mood to try another distro. But this is so weird that something like this will just happened sucks bad, makes my linux days thinner and thinner
