  1. The chipset itself is supported in linux. But some of them have different audio chips along with LAN chips that most of the time are not supported in Linux
  2. Anybody here using the commercial mdk 64-bit? I'm thinking about buying it I'm not sure .... I have some distros right now that I'm going to try such as Ubuntu, Mandrake 10.1 or so, and fedora core. DMage I know you got most of them running how are they? Except Ubuntuy I'm not sure if you have given that a spin.
  3. Sounds like a good deal. I don't know if Battlefield 2 might run on that video card. I remember someone is #musb saying that it wont run on anything lowe than a FX5900. I'm getting a PCI x16 GeForce 6800. It's going to cost abotu $270.00 US dollars, but it should last me for quite a good time. Now that the 7800 came out the price on the 6800 should drop. Which I think it has i've been seeing a lot of " Mail-in-rebates" on most of those GPU cards. The only thing that worries me is that my mobo will work on Linux ... it's a nForce4 ...
  4. Very true I'm searching around and around for the chipsets that I have. So far I'm looking at the Marvell LAN and it seems like with some people it work and with some it doesnt. Mepis being the one that supports most damn hardware .. don't know why.
  5. Yes it is. In a month I'm going to be getting a 6800 PCI x16. Can't wait to blow you guys away with the glxgears :P
  6. Thanks for the posts. Yes it seems like SATA is suppose to be really good but people aren't getting the best of it. Right now I'm looking at some mobos that support it. As I was talking to cybrjackle he suggested I do searching before I buy them to make sure they work on Linux. Since it is going to be probably the ONLY OS on that computer. I'm looking at some forums snooping around. Seems like a lot of people have issues with MSI and Linux, but not ECS :P Stick around I'm sure I'll have some other questions, thanks for the help.
  7. I'm curious of which one is faster. As time gets closer and closer for me to build my computer I'm trying to find out everything I can about the parts that I'm getting. So far I have a picture what distro is going to go on my 64-bit processor. So far MDK, Fedora, and Ubuntu are the main candidates. Now it's time to ask about Hard-Drives. Which one is faster? SATA 150 or SATA II. There is this one website that shows all this but I've been googling and can't find it. Cybrjackle you gave me the link to it a couple of nights ago, if not yesterday. It was the one that was comparing 64-bit processors against Intel based ones. I think I might find what I'm looking there but I still can't find the link. So anyhow maybe one of you can answer.
  8. ^ not a bad idea, On the other hand I'll take a look at the source later on , and I'll ask some of my mentors to help along with it. AHEM iphitus, illogic-al. Anyhow IE doesn't have full support forr CSS anyways. So it's not ARtees fault in IE. Anyhow put some " Download Firefox " logos on the board, it might help people :)
  9. yeah I was thinking about the kernel source in ubuntu. They don't provide one, but the nvidia drivers work out of the box, but it's the ones that they have on the repos, not the newest one. Right now Mandrake is the best choice for me, and KDE. Since I feel that gnome is good for my laptop since it's small. But since I'm getting a bigger computer I want something lets just say " Bloated " with more stuff :) Anyhow why would i need to buy the DVD version when I have Broadband? Wouldn't downloading it and burning it be the same thing?
  10. Ok thanks DragonMage. That is good to hear. I however am looking for a n00b distro. I seriously don't want to mess around with configuring. So I'm worth giving mdk a try for a couple more years. Now that the hardware that it is going on is better and more recent everything should work perfect. Is the version of x82_x64 free? Or do I have to pay money for it? Either way it seems good. Fedora and Mandriva seem to be the best choices right now. I'll also be testing out ubuntu. So I'm going to be having a total of 3 distros running for a while seeing which one runs better :P
  11. Not here either. And yes it's just a custom install of Debian pretty much.
  12. Thanks for the post. I want a distro though that takes FULL Advantage of the 64-bit processor. But still allows me to run applications that are 32-bit. I hear a lot of people complain about 64-bit codecs, but I could use the 32-bit normally that would be good too. I was wondering how come Firefox doesn't have a 64-bit version? I mean I thought when you compile a program under 64-bit you just need to re-compile the program and not change ( usually ) any part of the code. I'm most likely going with a 64-bit 3000+, 1gb RAM, Nvidia 6800 256mb PCI x16, 80 GB hdd ( maybe upgrade to 160) , and a CRT. I have to room for one, and I will get an LCD when I have more money and I learn about them. For now I will just stick to CRT. They are good and cheap. So what is _is_ the best distro. Right now I have Ubuntu ready to test out and everything. Should I get fedora, even gentoo?
  13. I'm going to build a computer by the end of this summer ( hopefully ) I was wondering what are some of the advantages of 64-bit and some of the dissadvantages. Also when you are buying them what options to look for. Seems like there is really not that much software for a 64-bit processor. Only 1 real good distro like Fedora. Everything else just seems to suck and lag behind. So I want to know is it really worth buying? How does it perform with popular apps like firefox, Linux in general etc etc.. games too btw. 14. Ok it seems like there is something faulty with the packages. Try switching your servers and installing gtkpod again.
  15. Ok first of all tell us what distro you are running, what kind of iPod it is ( mini, regular ), What version the iPod is ( do so my looking around in the iPod menu ) and third of all your current steps.
  16. Yeah I'm gona try and go for the xfce look tomorrow. Like try and copy it's taskbar. The first thing is that I'm going to get rid of the foot and put a ubuntu sign, then blow up the taskbar, make it transparent and add those big good looking icons to it :P
  17. heh take that from 390 from what I get and you USED to get :P Lol this is funny
  18. DragonMage: Hehe that seems like a good thing that is happenening over there. Anyhow the U.S is also changing, like I said the U.S Health Department just started switching computers to Linux. Not to mention the CDC , Center for Disease Control. They are huge, and them using Linux is even bigger. I don't know if this guy lives on a private island of Nicaragua or what, but you need to catch up on some Open Source news before you make such statements. You are however entitled to your opinion, which I think no one agrees and has proven you wrong.
  19. dude make the theme for it with that small modification!!!!! and for the gimp I get some messed up packages it can't install o well fiddle with it later Ok I'm lost I tried every freaking command in there and still no worky can you give me the step by step?
  20. Well it looks cuter if I was with the ubuntu sign instead. I still can't find it. Why doesn't gimp support svg's?
  21. I lied I dont' have the 6800 Ultra. I wish, I do however want what ^ that guy has, can't find it :( . It's a really good card the local LAN parties had it on all their computers for quite a while.
  22. The reason that PS3 is not going to be using memory cards is because it's going to be using servers. So when you sign up online with them you can store info on their servers. This however was not made clear, this is from word of mouth from the geeks at school. Coiuld be right could be wrong, but broadband is getting cheaper here the U.S. More and more people use it, specially teenagers.
  23. Very good point there iphitus. Another thing that comes to mind is, if you use windows you genenerally don't learn crap about your computer. I have a friend that calls himself a computer geek, but he can't even tell what brand of processor her has. He uses windows. Windows keeps things hidden, not allowing you to take the full wiff of the problem. I just think that by using Linux you learn a lot more about yoru system, and how it works. Right now I'm picking up to program with python. If I was on windows I don't think that I could ever see mysel learning a programming language. Linux is very educational. Because it opens up a lot of things for you to view and watch. I don't know, but I can't be without my Linux box. It's part of my life almost. Everywhere I go and there is computers I ask if they use Linux. lol, I guess it has just been such a great experience for me.
  24. Lol, he was crying his butt of when he got sent to court. There is no point of writing viruses really, the flash they show their colors and within a week or so they are tamed , distroyed and it's history. The only thing that is not history is the FBI chasing you.
