  1. thanx that would have worked but i dont have the 14mB in / that the rpm requires. I kinda suspected i might not have room there. i do have room in /home partition thats why i have to do this the hard way w/tar.gz installation. so if anyone has experience w/installing acrobat reader and tieing it in w/mozilla would much appreciate any advise.. thanx alan
  2. hello, when I install acrobat reader i get the following: Enter installation directory for Acrobat 5.0.9 [/usr/local/Acrobat5] /home/cot/Adobe_Reader_5 Directory "/home/cot/Adobe_Reader_5" does not exist. Do you want to create it now? [y] y Installing platform independent files ... Done Installing platform dependent files ... Done ./INSTALL: line 219: ed: command not found ERROR installing /home/cot/Adobe_Reader_5/bin/acroread I seethe directory's installed but i cant get acrobat to start. On the plugins page for mozilla I see it says to make sure a copy of acroread is in path but i appended PAth in .bash_profile w//home/cot/Adobe_Reader_5/Reader/intellinux/bin which is where I see acroread but a echo $PATH command does not show the addition. What I'm looking to do is get acrobat working w/mozilla 1.5. I installed acrobat as regular user does that make a difference? any suggestions.... thanx alan p.s.- the ~/Adobe_Reader_5/bin/ directory only has acroread.sh file in it. the directory ~/Adobe_Reader_5/Reader/intellinux/bin does have a acroread binary in it....
  3. thanx i'll try that alan
  4. yeah i did goto the kde cc and change the html file association to use mozilla first but it didnt work properly. Mozilla would open but not go the web short cut.I had the file association pointing to the mozilla shell script. is maybe that the problem? alan
  5. hello, One short ? I want to be able to create a shortcut to an html page on desktop and have mozilla open it not Konqueror. when I tried changing file assosciation of html files in KDE configure I told KDE to use the shell script @ /usr/local/mozilla/mozilla to open the s/c with. when i clicked on the s/c all i got were a bunch of warnings about missing kde apps and mozilla opened to some local kde page on my hard drive. Can someone please explain how u would go about getting mozilla to open web page & s/c on ones machine. by the way i'm using mandrake 9.1 & mozilla 1.5... alan
  6. Hello, I am using belkin wireless card(atmel chip set) w/mandrake 9.1 and have installed kwifimanager. i can get the program to see my ap only when i run program as root. So therefore i cant use the system tray applet portion of the program. More annoying is I cant get the configuration menu option to run at all. when i click on this in menu i see some disk activity and then nothing! This seems 2 be best part of program as it lets u see other available networks. Has anybody run into this problem and got a work around? thanx, alan
  7. just as an addon for anybody watching i did a search for mapage on google and did find the tar.gz for it. i did a make on it and wasnt sure if the resulting mpage executable should be placed in a specific place so i placed it in /sbin. tried install again from MCC and the same thing. install aborted foomatic filters needs mpage. any suggestions welcome... alan

    idsl?

from the looks of it all u should do is setup your ethernet card for DHCP and assign it an address and tell it what the gateway address of the router is. This info should be in the router kit. A common setup is gateway - 192.168.1.1 and your ethernet card would be 192.168.1.50. I'm just giving this as an example from a linksys router setup. U can do all this from the Mandrake Control center and have the Wizard walk u thru it. Not to be too technical but have u tried pinging your router? if u can then perhaps your problem is on the DSL ----> ISP portion of your network. if you can ping your router try pinging a web site and see if u can do that alan
  11. I'm ashamed to say but my main PC that is connected to my dsl is Windows 98. I just started in w/Linux about 9 mo's ago. I had an old PII laptop so decided to teach myself Linux. I do have wireless on my laptop(what a fiasco that was getting that atmel chip set 2 work on the Thinkpad) but no cd-burner. I may just try burning another copy and see if that solves trouble.... alan
  12. ok thanx it is a little more work then drag and drop but is better then the text file I was getting. I think that is one improvement that should be put on next iteration of Mozilla. How does one go about adding sugestions for features in Mozilla???thanx for the tip alan
  13. hello again, I'm trying to install a HP Laserjet 6L thru MCC on 9.1 It detects the printer fine then goes online to download the 5 rpm's needed and says signatures verified. Then we start installation process and are then dumped out quite quickly with a message of "mpage missing. needed for foomatic filters. installalation aborted". Oh why didnt u say so in the first place! What the heck is my system tryng to tell me. I looked in software installation 2 see if there was some package called mpage that I hadnt installed but found nothing. The only thing i did do is the first time I tried install of printer I aborted out because I didnt have time to wait 4 downloads. Does someone have advice on how 2 get my printer working thanx, alan
  14. hello, here's a simple one. When i drag url from Mozilla 1.5 to KDE desktop I dont get a url s/c on my desktop instead I get prompt to name text file that url will then go into. How can I make the dragging of url in Mozilla adress bar appear directly as a shortcut like u can do w/IE in Windows. Please no comments about the use of the W word in the forum... thanx, alan
  15. yeah i got to the boot prompt. and when i hit return it starts the bootup sequence with messages flying fast & furious. and then the startup just stops and the message i stated above is on the screen. I have a dsl connection so it takes me like 15mins 2 download so maybe i'll try redownloading a new iso. the md5 sum stuff is a little beyond me so i never download the checksum. I burn the image w/software i got w/hp 8500 external cd burner. it pops up little message saying it is an iso and do i want to burn the files in the iso and i say yes. I did same thing w/mandrakemove iso and that works ok... alan
  16. ok i downloaded SystemRescueCD v. 0.2.14 iso and burned to CD. Tried booting to it. I get an "init not found" error message w/suggestion to try "init=" command at bootup prompt. I wish I knew what init= should be. Is my ISO image corrupt? What is init value suppose to be? SO many ?'s so little time.Anyhow does anybody have suggestions... thanx alan
  17. thanx for the many replys. It would seem a second hard disk would be best. The only thing was being a newbie to linux it took a long while to get sound, winmodem etc hardware working on my machine. Now in one fell swoop everbody says start from scratch. That's whats holding me back. If I use QTParted to resize win_d and / would that be non-destructive? alan
  18. hello, I am running out of room on my root partion and would like to take some space from my windows d: partition. My hard drive is setup as follows: [root@localhost cot]# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/hda6 1.5G 1.4G 102M 93% / /dev/hda8 788M 212M 576M 27% /home /dev/hda1 2.0G 1.3G 748M 64% /mnt/win_c /dev/hda5 730M 279M 451M 39% /mnt/win_d I've booted into MandrakeMove and shrunk win_d partition and tried to then reuse space in / but when I bring up the / partition the size button is already maxxed out. Is there anyway to get more room on my / besides paying for something like Partition Magic? alan [formatted by spinynorman]
  19. i'm no guru but have u tried putting in your usernm & password @ prompt? and if u succesfully login at the prompt issue command "startx" w/o the parenthesis. if all u did was somehow disable your autologin this should work....
  20. thanx i kind of knew i could goto rpmfindnet. i just wanted 2 get the latest version which u dont usually get w/rpm's. Also beeing new to linux shooting troubles is the best way 2 learn the os.I anybody has any other suggestions I would appreciate. alan
  21. hello, as u can see from my query i cant get adobe acrobat to install. When i run the INSTALL script I get the above message. I even tried extracting the linuxrdr directory and making the sim links the web page says to. But still no good. Has anyone sucessfully installed Acrobat that has any suggestions. I'm running mdk 9.1 w/mozilla 1.5. alan
  22. point taken its time 2 put this thread 2 bed and thanx again for everybody's contribution. i must say i've been to more then a couple of forums now that I started 2 learn linux and u guys are the most helpful bunch i've seen. i'll be trying to absorb as much as I can from u guys.... alan
  23. not 2 beat a dead horse but did a search in www.google.com/linux w/query: http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&lr=&ie=U...G=Google+Search and maybe i'm going blind but i gave up after 3rd page of output w/no mention of this very worthwhile site. i did notice that sponsering link linuxquestions.org was #1?hmmmm.... alan
  24. u guys are the best! by disabling autologin (which by the way is in mcc bootup section in 9.1 as u postulated) i rebooted and there's konqi awaiting my command on shutdown. does anyone know why autologin has 2 be disabled? And now it makes sense why he would appear randomly. I didnt put 2 and 2 together that he was appearing when i was relogging in for some reason or another. I never realized the connection. well thanx for solving that mystery and thumbs up to everyone on this board. I'm glad i stumbled upon this forum for mandrake users. Maybe someone should work on getting this site indexed on google/linux. I've searched several times for forums on mandrake linux and this site was never in the 1st page or 2 where it definitaley belongs. thanx again i'll be baaaaack!!1 alan
  25. yes u are absolutely right but there has already been designed an elegant way to graphically give me a choice of what to do on shutdown and I would like to know it. I understand there is more then 1 way 2 skin a cat but i want to skin it this way. If a particular component does not work properly do we work around it or try 2 fix it. I thought this was one of the main differences between the windows and linux camps.. alan
