Has anybody else experienced such a problem and been able to resolve it. I see postings about a pmsuspend script. has anyone had success w/installing that package.. thanx, alan
  4. yeah that was it. i typed in last line: id:5:initdefault: # System initialization. si::sysinit:/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit l0:0:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 0 l1:1:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 1 l2:2:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 2 l3:3:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 3 l4:4:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 4 l5:5:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 5 l6:6:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 6 # Trap CTRL-ALT-DELETE ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -r now # When our UPS tells us power has failed, assume we have a few minutes # of power left. One thing i still get is console splash screen for a couple seconds b4 ui kicks in. can i move the respawn line up in initab to eliminate console appearing at all. i seem to remember going right from lilo screen to login screen... thanx, alan
  5. u know its funny u should mention that. I was googling and found a post that sid last line of inittab should be"x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/X11/xdm -nodaemon" my inittab has no such last line! now ive switched to kdm in MCC i'm wondering should i switch it back to mdkkdm. the only question then is where is the mdkkdm dm located? and can i reinstall the theme if broken?
  6. yeah i believe i'm setup to boot graphical here are the relevant lines from inittab: id:5:initdefault: # System initialization. si::sysinit:/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit i even tried switching to kdm thinking that might rewrite whatever went bad but i still boot to prompt and have to issue startx command which is a real pain alan
  7. hello, i lost power to mandrake 9.1 system and ever since when i boot i have lost the graphical login. I go into a command line where i have to issue startx command. I went into MCC and checked under Display manager and MdkKdm is still choosen. I also went to XFDrake and choose boot to a graphical login but still no good. I was hoping someone could point me in right direction to getting graphical login back. Is there a config file I can manually edit or something else i'm missing? thanx, alan
  8. hello, i'm still having problems w/my new mdv 06 install. right now my most annoying problem is when i goto shutdown half the time the kicker disappears but then the desktop just sits there. i have to then hit the power button and it starts the shutdown but always hangs on some process either alsa or eth0 etc. i then have to press power button again to shutdown computer. then when i restart i get a "mandriva was shut down blah blah blah" i've tried disabling laptop mode but that did no good. The only thing i added from install was a usb mouse which works fine. Is there anyway I can find out what process is hanging the system on shutdown. I have a toshiba satellite laptop w/mandriva 2006 and kde 3.4... thanx, alan
  9. hello, well i really screwed up my computer trying to upgrade to mdv '06 from 9.1. After repartioning during install i realized my hard drive would not fit new mandriva. luckily i had backed up partition info and using Move i was able to restore partions(I share it w/aWindows install). Now when i rebooted i went thru all sorts of troubles fixing inodes but system now boots w/no error messages. I have stuff in my lost & found folder but all hardware is working and i have kde desktop ok. My problem is twofold. First when I tried to start firefox i get "firefox-bin:1888): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "galaxy". I looked in MCC to see if i could reinstall GTK but now I get no listings for any software either to add or what is existing. I tried urpmi.removemedia -a and redownload sources but no good. also tried reinstall from discs and no good. I really dont want to do a reinstall if possible. Any and all help on getting urpmi working & also FF most appreciated.... alan
  10. hello, i just installed mandriva 2006 on laptop and am noticing constant activity on my cd/dvd player. I looked in ksysguard and see that a process named kded is consuming 45-50 % of resorces even when system is idle. I googled kded and get conflicting problem resolutions. Most people seem to be having this trouble and alot of hdd activity. I stopped KAT but that didnt help. Does anyone know of a solution to why kded is so active. I looked on my mdk 9.1 machine w/kde 3.1 and that shows 0 in ksysguard when system is idle. thanx alan
  11. alright thanx. i'll take a closer look @ the driver info in Device Manager and se e what i can get from that... alan
  12. i got a toshiba satellite 1400 s151 w/ Trident Cyber ALADDiN-T graphics chip & the Ali M1535 Sound chip so i was wondering if the packages might give me support that iso's wouldnt. Also Windows Device manager only says it is Toshiba pci-mini wifi card. Is this the driver i should be looking for or do i have to figure out the chipset the card uses. all the documentation just refers to it as a Toshiba pci-mini card. I'm thinking that it is just a branded name and the chip manufacturer is somebody like orinco etc..Anybody w/experience on toshiba laptops have any suggestions or advice for this particular laptop's hardware setup I would be most appreciative.. thanx, alan
  13. hello, i was going to install the new Mandriva on toshiba laptop and was wondering if there is any difference in downloading the free iso's when they become available or buying the Discovery or PowerPack. Specifically do u get more driver's for video, sound. wifi w/the packages? alan

  15. unfortunately i did remove both not realizing what the kdegraphics package contained. when i reinstalled kdegraphics i again was told had to reinstall xpdf package. i was wondering ifthere was any command line , perhaps w -no depends option that would allow me to remove xpdf package or is there a way from command line to specify just ksnapshot from kdegraphics package to install?.. alan
  16. hello, just downloaded and installed acrobat 7.0 and want to remove xpdf and kghostview to free up some room on harddisk. Unfortunately when i go to remove the xpdf package in Control Center it says that kdegraphics package must also be removed. I want to keep programs like Ksnapshot. Is there a way 2 remove Xpdf while keeping kdegraphics package. i am using MDK 9.1 w/kde 3.1 thanx, alan
  17. hello, i want to add a theme to my mdk 9.1 system running kde 3.1 but on compiling theme i get error message that there are no k headers installed. i see that i have kdelibs-3.-58.mdk & kdelibs-common3.1 packages installed. i have specified both directories /usr/lib & /usr/lib/kde3 when running ./configure but still no good. Can someone advise me if i have the right packages installed and where i should specify where the k headers reside? thanx, alan [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  18. i just never got a good grip on what packages where on the cd's so i made an entry for each cd. but then i was wondering if i was getting a complete listing of packages available cause when i looked on the cd's i see different directories like say on one of the disc's there is a /rpm7 & an /rpm8 directory. do i need to add entries for both directories to get a listing of all the packages when i do a query? To be quite honest i dont remember if i got a listing of packages on my original install. So if i understand u the contents of the 1st three cd's are automatically setup and i have to add entries for cd's 4-7? alan
  19. hello, i have mdk 9.1 powerpack and was wondering what is the proper way to add the cd contents to the Software Sources Manager under MCC. For instance on several of the disc's there are several directories on the CD. Do u need to make an entry for each directory on the CD? Or does making one entry for each of the 7 cd's do. Also how does easy urpmi tie into this. If i just put the web sites for the sources, updates etc give me access to all the apps that are on the cd's. and if so why i do need the cd's? thanx alan
  20. i answered my own ? i had installed jre in a nonstandard path. when i used full path to java i get version info. thanx anyway alan
  21. hello, i just upgraded java from 1.4 to 1.5 using the rpm.bin method. once installed and confirmed 1.5 was working ok in firefox i removed the old 1.4 java in mandrake control center. everything seems to be working ok(firefox, limewire etc..) but when i issue the command java -version it comes back "bash:command not found". i even tried command from /java/bin directory to eliminate path troubles. is not the java executable the program that is used for version info or not? did i delete some other script file when i removed 1.4? any suggestions. i also cant do a man java like i could before alan
  22. i looked at the trolltech site for an updated qt install but i didnt see one. does anyone know of where i can get upated qt development library. also would i need to update my whole qt install to the latest version? thanx alan
  23. ok thanx. do u know of any good howto's on the make process. i read the one at tldp but it really isnt for total newbie to compiling. alan
  24. ok do u know what qt library i would need and where do i get them? alan
  25. thanx for the advice. being a relative newbie i have very little experience compiling programs. In windows u click on setup.exe. I fnally got thru the confiure script ok but when i ran make & make install i got some errors. i know sometimes u can get errors and that's ok but being new i dont even know if i was succesful. can someone tell me what should be the general outcome of the make command. should there be some *.o file? or is there something else u should be looking for. i copied the output from make & make install. i know its long but perhaps someone w/experience can decipher it cause its greek 2 me: config.status: executing depfiles commands Good - your configure finished.
