A good sign of indicating a total system freeze in X windows mode was a system monitor running in the panel.

I'm sorry what do you mean by that. All I have is Ksysguard running monitoring the cpu temp. it moderates between 54-65 C. At least I assume its giving me temp in centigrade. Also i've never noticed an option on throttling down cpu in bios. where did u find it and what did you set yours to.thanx...

well i have spring 2007.1 installed and am generally impressed. I have one problem that is very aggravating. My mouse and keyboard will freeze at random times and I will have to do a power restart. This problem goes back to 2007.0 edition. It can sometimes be 15 mins after I boot or 4hrs. The only thing i notice is that the majority of the time I have MCC and software updates running or have run earlier in session. It may be my imagination but this problem seems to have started when i upgraded the original rpmdrake from 2007.0 I have looked in syslog & messages but nothing seems abnormal. I thought maybe it was a problem w/the X server and was hoping that the upgrade is a to Spring would solve this trouble. But no luck. I've run a memory test and that came out ok. The fact that it can happen 10mins or 4hrs into a session would seem to rule out heat. I have this laptop dual booting w/XP and that does not experience any problem. Any suggestions on where to look would be most helpful. I would like to stick w/Mandriva if I can get this problem solved. Here is a readout of dmesg;

Is that not the latest kernel? I only did a cursory look last night @ update but I didnt notice a later kernel. Anyhow i issued the following to fstab and am working ok.

/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto rw,noauto,user,exec 0 0

but still. how can we expect to grow Linux when a simple install disables floppy & cd?

I dont think we can expect the ordinary user to start appending the fstab or even know what that is...

am having couple of problems w/spring 2007. one being that I cant mount floppy or my cd-rw. i get error about no entry in either fstab or mtab and sure enough I looked and there isnt. When I updated from 2007.0 it seems it should have made those entries? Anyway are we still using using the fstab for mounting or is there something else that took its place? also what would be the appropriate entries.thanx...

Just updated to MDV One spring 2007. One problem i'm having is the address book in kmail will not open. I click on it in menu and nothing happens. Anybody have any ideas on why this is happening. I googled and visited kontact web site but didnt see anything there pertaining to this problem.any help appreciated

what i did was download klamav 0.41 from rpmnet. I found a post that advised that clam .9x's config file was somehow incompatible w/less then klamav .41. once downloaded & installed can now update klamav. it would be nice if people updating the repos would check simple things like keeping clam & klamav in sync....

i've just updated klamav via MCC to klam-av-0.32-4mdk and clam 0.90-1.1mdv2007.0 but now when i try to update database files using Update Now button i get a "Config file error" message. I dont see any config file in my .klamav didrectory. Anybody run into a similar problem since updating? Googled error message but could find no results that helped.

thanx. I found trouble. Had to goto kcontrol>appearence&themes>fonts & just select any other font size and apply change.Then my text on toolbar and all text in menu's & dialog boxes appeared normal again.

i really hosed my Firefox since trying to change themes to Embassy. Whenever i launch FF i get no File,Edit etc toolbar. its all scrunched. When I launch FF from terminal get numerous "Gtk- Warning ** Default font does not have a family set" & also "font does not have a positive size." I tried reinstalling FF still no good. I guess I hosed something w/trying that embassy theme which didnt display right.I've gone back to my original theme but FF is still not displaying correctly. Any help on what I need to do to get this right would be much appreciated. I'm running MDV 2007.0 w/FF2.02

to be honest i'm having so many stability problems that I just want to always run old_rpmdrake. And it simplifies maintenance. I know if I want to do something/anything I can do it from MCC.And to me the less clutter on the desktop the better...

thanx but that's not exactly what i am experiencing. I have no trouble adding repo's or accessing and updating. It's that my install has become very unstable since i updated to new rpmdrake v3.3. i will be in MCC doing a systemupdate or looking for packages and a good 50% of the time while i'm in there my cursor just disappears and keyboard totally locks up. cant ctl-alt-f1 or anything. have to do a hard reset which i hate doing to bring system back up. I want revert back old_rpmdrake to see if problem persists. I've looked in system logs but see nothing that stands out. Is there any logs for rpm i could look at. As for getting old_rpm to work w/MCC i'm thinking of renaming all old_rpm binaries in /usr/bin to the new rpmdrake binary names. Do u think this will force MCC to bring up old_rpmdrake....

I've been experiencing problem w/new rpmdrake package causing my laptop to freeze. I reinstalled old old_rpmdrake package but it is not used when using MCC. I tried removing the updated rpmdrake but urpmi wants to remove old_rpmdrake also. Any suggestions on howto make old_rpmdrake open by default in MCC?

Has there been anything about the new rpmdrake causing troubles. I looked in the latest errata but saw nothing.thanx.....

i was hoping to avoid going backward in installing old-rpmdrake. If this keeps up i may have to. i'm not going to end up in some dependency hell by doing ths am i?

i'm wondering w/what I found w/listing packages and what u explained are people supposed to leave update unchecked in Media Manager and add all the update repo's instead. But that seems a little complicated to get updates...

ok thanx. the "release" repo's are they equivalent to repo's i've been using from easyurpmi? and the "updates" repo's are they equivalent to checking the update box in media manager and backports is akin to thac's repo's? how about the use of backports. i hosed the printing function on 2006 by using one of thac's updated packages. i really dont want that again.And thanx Mhn. by not checking updates box in Media Manager for my sources i now get listings for all available packages. I hope that isnt considered the normal behavior for this new rpmdrake....

It's not completely broken, at least not for me. This is what I see:

no unfortunately i get no results back when i do a search b4 installing kaffeine. once i installed kaffeine using urpmi then it shows as an installed package.

Backports is a new tree in main, it's not in cooker. It's under media/main. You can add it like any other ftp tree.

i'm sorry but do you mean i can add it like any other repo?

It's just a matter of time till the update version of 2007 or to find a new version on the newly opened /backports

 

how does one get access to the cooker or /backports rpmdrake package?

not to belabor the point but if people @ mandriva knew rpmdrake was broke why wasnt the old version used and then offer the new rpmdrake as an update once bugs were worked out? And why is there no mention of this trouble in the errata or release notes.

got to tell u i've been trying opensuse 10.1. Their package manager had a similar problem w/Yast. I think its more of the arms race mind set of constant upgrades. If you have a release thats a year old its obsolete seems to be the CW w/linux distro's now. And we are paying the price w/these not ready for prime time releases. So when u say there are choices yes there are literally hundreds. but when Suse & Mandriva,two of the most popular and main stream distro's, have problems like these and are released anyway to community then we have serious problem that needs to be addressed...

i hope some of the people @ mandriva see this post. i will also post on mandriva forums. I mean everbody is always complaining in the linux community about how linux isnt more widely adopted. I'll tell u why. Cause they let stuff like this out the door and it "simply dont work". say what u will about Vista development time but the softies wouldnt have shipped w/this kind of problem. and if they did people would crucify them. but w/linux its ok. we'll never get above 1% penetration doing releases like this. Dont be a slave to the mentality that u have to keep the release dates every 6-9 months. Let fedora do that. we like Mandriva cause its stable and user friendly...

thanx i found your thread. the way rpmdrk is now working is simply not acceptable. The big selling point w/mandriva over RH or SuSe was that it is more user friendly. Now you're telling people to use a CLI package manager on probably the most important feature in a distro non-technical people are looking for ie ease of program installation. Boy somebody really dropped the ball w/this. I'm having a difficult time and i've been using mdv since 9.1.

oh man that is not good. i used to like to do a list and see what was available. Is there any other graphical installer people have been using instead of rpmdrake?
