  1. Thing is, people do buy stuff from spammers. People do fall for the Nigerian fraud and derivatives. Remember it doesnot take much of a percentage for a spammer to be winning this game. My guess is that 0.2% would be ample to do it. I remember reading (and I cannot remember where) a survey that said that something like 5% of people had bought something from unsolicited email. That is pretty high. I would think it does make it worth their while. Unfortunately. That said, I am all about fighting spammers with their own weapons.
  2. I guess this guy has never had to do the dreaded re-install of Windows to fix something. Most people have, and regularly at that. In fact I understand it is a favourite solution of MS themselves.
  3. Speaking of this (minor hijack) does anyone know if there are any Mandrake jigdo mirrors? If not, and if I put together the files, could it be hosted by anyone?
  4. What tyme said. If it is signatures you can safelyignore it. Some software does conflict with other things you might have as well. Is it an issue of dependencies? Although that does seem unlikely. Areyou able to post some sample output here?
  5. Mandrake 10 seems to do this on boot (give errors for ethx). SImply open up a terminal and bring it up manually (drop it first to ensure it is free). Works for me everytime
  6. Not at all. If you have the resources to run it all power to you. I don't and have a preference for an ultra clean desktop anyway. My point is really that they allow people with no experience outside windows something to work with in an environment that appears mostly familiar.
  7. Are you choosing (and do you have) Community Edition or the full-noise version? The full one gives you an update server. Or, as per anon
  8. Bloat is, I think, in the eye of the beholder. I do think we still need the heavy desktops like KDE and Gnome. If we are to win the battle for the hearts and minds of Windows users we must show them something they will be able to use intuitively. Do I use these DMs? No. But when I first installed here I did put them on to give my wife an interface she would be able to use easily. Then I showed her lighter and faster ways to do things. My 2 cents is that we leave that sort of thing there - all the bloat you can imagine. After all, we do not have to installit and it will give people new to *nix something they can teeth on. Saves us from looking like zealots who do not give a damn about the average user as well. Which in turn will bring more converts.
  9. The easiest way to do this is to go to this address: Easy URPMI by plf and choose an update server near you. Then just enter it as they suggest and away you go. This will enter the correct (you may have to try a couple of servers to get a working one) information into RPMDrake. Nice and easy
  10. Anyone know what happened to Cube - great game but the site seems to have disappeared and the download is no longer available
  11. Flxubox alll the way. I find both KDE and Gnome too unwieldy and heavy to use. Flux starts quickly and apps load a lot faster in it. Also - I prefer it from an eye candy point of view. It is just very very clean

    idsl?

My earlier reply seems to have disappeared in the server change. Anyway, get the inet address for the router and then: route add default gw xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Where the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the inet address for the router.
  13. It may be either that your install was unsuccessful completely or that there is a problem with the bootloader. I take it that you are having trouble booting from fd as well. Is there a 'failsafe' option listed in your bootloader? If so give that a try and see what happens

    SBlive LS

Thanks, I will give the Audigy driver a workout and see what happens

    SBlive LS

Sorry I should have added that it is the SBlive! LS, not the Audigy

    SBlive LS

Anybody had any success getting one of these going - note "LS" model. sndconfig shows this: Model: Unknown vendor | unknown device 1102:0002 It is half way recognised as a SBlive but nothing I have tried has managed to make it work as yet
  17. Looks much like mine: my Thunderbird entry is - [exec] (Thunderbird) {/home/nocturnes/thunderbird/thunderbird} BY my reckoning that should show on the menu, but it doesn't. It is the correct path and of course I can open it via a terminal window. Wierd.

    Flux Menus

OK so here is the deal. I can add anything I like to the Flux menu. But for some reason I am totally unable to get thunderbird to appear. Anything else I try works wonderfully - not thunderbird. Any ideas?
  19. You can get everything on it using urpmi from ftp repositories.
  20. You know, I am starting to wonder what else in there could be ... sped-up
  21. Probably the best thing to do is open a terminal and type "which firefox" to find the program itself. From there use menudrake or the text editor of your choice to add it to the KDE menu
  22. Does anyone know how to make this permanent rather than having to do it each time FF is run?
  23. I have set the menu.Aplha to 160 in the init but my menus are still not transparent. Any ideas?
