  1. Problem solved... I was just plain stupid. :D
  2. Hi, Mark. Well, maybe we can fix that problem... First question: what mandrake version do you run on your comp? 9.2 or 10.0? Community or official edition? What is the exact name of the network card (maybe I can find the driver-link on the net)? Which Kernel are you running? (2.6.x or 2.4.x) What you need to know is that, if the network-device is unknown to the Kernel, then linux selects usually a network device that is somehow similar to the one you are actually running, but it is not identical, so you won't be able to activate it (I experienced that the hard way with a 90 € dsl-ethernetmodem... ). So, we will try to find the right driver module. If we can't find the right driver (= your network card is not supported by linux-kernel) then there is still the possibility to buy a new ethernet card. They are quite cheap. Mine cost me 6,90 € and that should be affordable. But before we get to that, we will give everything a try.

    firefox gone???

Usually, Firefox installs in the /home/blahblahblah/firefox/ folder, unless you give another path to the program. Just browse through your home directory and in case it is hidden(by accident), activate "show hidden files/directories" in Konqueror menu-bar.

    ADSL Semi-down

hmmm... sounds strange... just trying to understand what you mean... your comp doesn't connect to web-sites etc after initializing the network card et all, but after running an adsl-restart, everyting works fine again? if this is so, then i think you have found a bug with your adsl-card. if it is not so, did you check the security-level/firewall? did you check if other distros (e.g. knoppix or other live cds) report the same problem?

    ADSL Semi-down

    a) did you do an "upgrade" or clean install of mdk10. B) did you install mdk10ce or oe?

    Flashplayer

have you tried it as root or as normal user?
  7. Hi. I thought this was simple, but actually, it ain't (at least in MDK10). In Suse, I had no problems with changing the bootsplash-screen. On Mandrake, I dunno, how to do it. In the MCC, I changed the theme and did a "lilo -v", but nothing happened. Do I have to make something with "mkinitrd"? Any help would be greatly welcomed, as I really can't stand any more this ugly blue bootsplash...

    Flashplayer

hmm... well, actually, I installed flash via download at macromedia.com, then extracted the files and made a ./flashplayer-install in the konsole as root. Up and running. The flash-package has a small howto included.
  9. Okay... system works now. *posting from mdk10 kde3.2 desktop* :P
  10. The funny thing is that not only Munich switched to Linux, but most Universitys and... tadaaa... all mayor brazilian companys as well as the government want to test linux for in order to permanenty switch from win to linux, thus supporting brazilian linux-developers like conectiva and kurumin. Microsoft refused to give a comment on that decision. I bet they are chewing nails now in Redmond. :D

    10ce hangs

Maybe a problem with nvidia? Check the forums, I think there are many nvidia problems for discussion. And I heard/read of many users having trouble with nvidia or ati-cards, freezing the box.
  12. Hmm... dunno, if they work in mdk. but here are two links that might help: http://www.linuxcompatible.org/cdetail10319.html that one is not exactly mdk, but knoppix, but I post it anyway: http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php...usb+modem+cable

    Help

Which Kernel did you use for install? The 2.6 or the latest 2.4 version supplied with Mdk? Maybe it is simply a Kernel 2.6 bug which isn't corrected yet. Try an install with the 2.4 Kernel. Maybe it helps (as the older mdk-versions also had the 2.4 kernel... just an idea...)
  14. Did you already check the companys homepage for possible linux drivers? Or alternatively some driver-download-sites on the net? Keep in mind, that not all modems are supported in the mdk10 community edition (there are more supported modems in the official version)... but you should find them somewhere on the web (I hope).
  15. I know this bug and it is common. XMMS uses OSS by default in MDK10 although most users use/need ALSA. My XMMS also froze , but after changing the output to ALSA (in the xmms-menu ->options), XMMS was running smooth.
  16. As the BIOS doesn't let you install via cd (which is quite strange... how old is the comp???), have you thought about the possibility of putting the hardrive of the HP into the other comp (removing the original hd first) for a clean install? I assume that you are able to plug in /switch harddisks. It would be (IMHO) the easiest way to install it properly. And: do you have an ext3 or reiserfs journaled file system? I heard/read of several guys who had problems with ext3.
  17. Hi ho, it's me again. After getting my eth0 and modem to respond and "work" (at least partially), I encountered a rather small, but disturbing problem. First, I have to say that the manual for my lg lam200e is big shit as it doesn`t explain anything to a newbie (that is what I am). I did set up my modem as good as possible (to the best of my abilities) and added all that 1234567890001@blah.com data. Still, I can't properly connect to the net. The modem-syslog says: 1/1/1970 0:5:40> ADSL connected 1/1/1970 0:5:40> ATM layer is up, cell delineation achieved 1/1/1970 0:5:40> ATM Connected 1/1/1970 0:0:0> CfgMgr: 'Washer.dlz' module not found. 1/1/1970 0:0:0> CfgMgr: 'Shtm.dlz' module loaded. 1/1/1970 0:0:0> Dynamic NAPT is enabled 1/1/1970 0:0:0> ATM: Setting up vcc0, VPI=1, VCI=32 1/1/1970 0:0:0> ATM: Detected 1/1/1970 0:0:0> Ethernet Device 0 Detected Now what does that mean? What is washer.dlz and shtm.dlz? Are they necessary in order to get my modem up and running? Do I have to install them? And if yes, where can I find them? By the way, I also tried the modem with knoppix and I got exactly the same results. Now, gentlemen, who is willing to explain to me, what my modem tries to tell me? P.S.: Sorry for disturbing you once again... but i am a simple journalist, thus a total network-idiot. :P
  18. I would simply try with a reinstall of mozilla first, as I encountered installation problems with other software on my linux box. If the problem remains, then take a look at the log-files, as already suggested.
  19. Hey, Chris... it is not his fault that it doesn't work. :P And... as you are (in my opinon) an expert with networking stuff, it would be useful to have one howto available for download. I browsed through the net before I posted my problems here and I didn`t find any howto for networking for mdk10. the newest one i found was for mdk8.2. B) And you, perl4ever... look at my problem (adsl help needed - newbie), maybe it will help you.
  20. Did you change your overall sound output from Autodetect or OSS to ALSA in the K-kontrol center? Changing the output from Autodetect to ALSA removed my sound problems. Just give it a try..
  21. Hey! :D I took another, identical ethernet cable and now, I get acess to the modem. Hip hip horray! I looked at the other cable and it is in perfect condition. I don't see anything broken, but who knows, why some cables are accepted and others not... I had this kind of problem already once on another computer (an old P166) while trying to add a new harddisk drive. Okay, I hope that I will get the last stuff running, that is configuring the modem. If I run into trouble, I will be back (not today, but ... well you will see when, if at all). And I want to say thanx once again. I admire your patience and your generous help on this matter. Without you, I would have thrown everything outta the windows someday. Thanx and see you, Chris (whoever you are, wherever you are)
  22. Okay, it is not only me, who is getting frustrated with that stuff . before I log off, I give you all information on the cables I have (I attached both cables that are inluded in the package). One ethernet cable RJ45: pin 1 = Rx+, orange/white pin 2 = Rx-, orange pin 3 = Tx+, green/white pin 4 = N/A, blue pin 5 = N/A, blue pin 6 = Tx-, green pin 7 = N/A, brown/white pin 8 = N/A, brown Then there is the RJ-11 ADSLl cable, whrere it says pin 1 = not used pin 2 = ADSL-signal UKA'a pin 3 = ADSL-signal UKA'b pin 4 = not used I do have a second set of cables here and will try them in a minute. Maybe it is simply a broken cable? That would be quite weird.... Will be back soon.
  23. I think the new website is a good idea, as the "updates" of art.gome.org were quite slow and the site didn't function for over 2 months now... Although I work with kde and blackbox most of the time, I will take a look at gnome-look from time to time, just because I am interested. :D
  24. Uh ... thanx for the hint. :D
  25. Ah, I almost forgot... by accident I forgot the -c5 before the ping the first time. That time I got that result in an endless turn, so that i had to restart the system in order to stop it. Output is here: [root@localhost root]# ifup eth0 [root@localhost root]# ping 10.0.0.2 PING 10.0.0.2 (10.0.0.2) 56(84) bytes of data.
