  1. Hmm... only two persons with german translations and no native speakers? Looks as if I have a job to do. ;) Okay, I can do some translations, if needed, as long as it doesn't eat up all of my working time. Alternatively, I can read and correct some stuff. Language skills: - german (native speaker) - spanish (university-degree/half-native) - english (university-degree) If you need my help, just contact me. :)
  2. it must be new. i also never heard of it before and distrowatch is usually very fast in terms of "publishing" new distros. but i must say, that i am still a bit sceptical ... is this probably a joke?...
  3. okay, here are some more: SUSE = VW Phaeton (tries to be more than it is) Ark Linux = Tatra (somehow never gets completed) fedora = Ford Mondeo (same old engine paired with new state-of-the-art-design) Slackware = Morgan +8 (only few dare to drive this "car" and they need to know everything about their baby, as no garage is willing to repair it. the few users are proud of their "car", which is extremely fast and stable, once it runs)
  4. one of the many questions that go unanswered. siemens-fujistsu also uses intel... for no apparent reason. except m$ uses the typical "threat" of stopping the support... but who knows?
  5. i also searched and didn't find anything... which is quite strange, because in other distros, the icons were always kept separate, like e.g. in suse or yoper. but things change and ... bah.. not so important anyways. :P

    Random freezing

I suggest, check your system with a knoppix boot-cd that doesn't install on hd. if that works well, then you will be able to find out more about your hardware (especially the mainboard), thus making it easier to find the problem. if knoppix also freezes (which i actually think will happen, as the other distros also foze), then, i think, there must be some kind of incompatibility of your ram with the mainboard. try with a different vendors ram, if possible. and when you go to the shop, take the knoppix-cd with you in order to check the system at once. ;)
  8. Hi jmr. some information can be found here: http://www.linux.org/docs/index.html if you want to buy a book, i think "linux in a nutshell" is one of the best. for special things, just search the net for "howtos" good luck :)
  9. okay... that works, although it is not exactly, what i expected ;)
  10. installed them and i must say... they look terrific :) can they be converted for kde or is that forbidden?
  11. i want only the dustbin and the home-folder on my gnome desktop, if this is possible. okay, i wasn't around for that one, but trying to install kde 3.2 on suse 8.2 was enough of a nightmare for me. destroyed my box three times in two days.

    Startup issues

bringing up the eth0 also takes up some time on my box (eth0 + adsl-flatrate). this is quite normal. but it doesn't mean that your box doesn't work. it is simply that linux tries to bring up eth0 at startup, while most redmond-products start up eth0 after your dektop shows up. the time "lost" is the same. concerning the "checking-failed" thing: go to mcc and have a look at your hardware, if there is any item that doesn't show up, although it should. i think that it yould indicate to e.g. some hotplugging device not being configured.
  13. not even a chance to hide them? well, i simply don't undertand the policy behind it. kde doesn't show my gnome-dustbin or gnome-home folder, so why must gnome show kde-idustbin and home-folder? this is weird...
  14. I finally started to explore the gnome desktop, but hey... my kde-desktop icons (home-folder, dustbin,...) show up on the gnome 2.4 desktop. Simple question: may i delete them (without losing the data of course) or is there any other way to hide'em in gnome? It looks kinda weird, having two dustbins and two "home" folders on my desk.
  15. is hotplugging activated? take a look in mcc and then look, if harddrake recognizes the cam. usually, the digicam is mounted @ /mnt/removable/~ once plugged in.
  16. ... and it worked after rebooting the system. so problem solved :P
  17. okay, now something really weird (stupid/buggy?) happened to me... i was working with blackbox as root, administrating my box. later opened via konsole the kcontrol in order to change konquerors behavior. some messages appeared about gui... then i logged off again in order to log in as normal user. result: blackbox dead, icewm dead, tvm dead, X won't work somehow. i restarted my box (mandrake 10oe with all patches applied) and only got bash-line in order to login all loginmanagers were dead, too. i checked the x-session.error message and it says: okay, any idea how i can repair my x environment without reinstalling?
  18. it is even mor simple. you only have to change the sound-preferences in xmms from oss to alsa. no rpm-reinstall necessary. hmm.. actually, we had this topic so often, we should pin it. :)
  19. Yeah, I also received the "3 cd package"... but they are all dvds... and I have only 2 cd-rom and one cdrw drive.. all the effort for nuthin'. bugger

    VIA Audio

just change the soundoutput (->preferences in e.g. XMMS) of your application from OSS to ALSA :)
  21. do you have only a dvd-drive? if not, try with a normal cd-rom-drive, maybe that helps. also take a look here, maybe it helps: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=12484
  22. KDE, Gnome and Blackbox. I stick with KDE for ~70% of my work and like its easy customizing and good integration of kontact etc. Yeah, Gnome (~20%) has Ximian-mail as alternative, but I found customizing Gnome always a bit... . What really annoyed me is that all my KDE-Desktop-icons appear on my Gnome-Desktop (two dustbins... how stupid...) Best thing about Gnome is its logo, I must admit. If I want a real minimalistic desktop that starts immediatly, I use good old blackbox (with a flat gray-theme). Tried Windowmaker several times and didn't really like its look and feel. And Enlightenment was something I could and can never love... It was like a hate relationship right from the beginning, but don't aks me why. XFCE4 is better, but ... three desktopenvironments is enough. ;)
  23. What do you want to try? To give birth to a horse???
  24. Maybe you also have to change the sound architecture. Go to kcontrol (in console e.g. or via the menu entries), select sounds -> sound-system and check, if the tab "hardware" in the right window shows ALSA or e.g. OSS. Try ALSA first, if that doesn't work, try the other ones, but ALSA is most common.
  25. Hm, I do know, that computers automatically restart when e.g. a graphiccard is overheating. Are all cables in the right place? Is the power given to the hardware the right amount? Is your fan okay? Do a complete hardware scan, before tweaking the OS.
