  1. Get them from here: (instructions on the site and in Readme file). Nvidia drivers for Linux When I installed Mandrake, the driver it used could not do any 3D stuff, so Tuxracer etc. didn't work. I had to use the proper drivers from Nvidia to get things working properly.
  2. Bah! Just call me Noob! I re-installed the video drivers and all is well! Apparently the updates included a new X-Server which then requires drivers to be re-installed. I guess I'm supposed to know things like this!
  3. Hi All, Having used Mandrake Update to download and install bug fixes security updates etc (I clicked to install all updates) I am unable to run a couple of 3D games. UT2004 crashes back to desktop just before the opening movie should play. When running Everquest under Cedega, the same thing happens when it should go to the character select screen (the first point at which it displays the 3D character model). Tuxracer is working fine and glxgears has fps of 3000+, so 3D drivers seem to be working. It appears that one of the updates has changed something to stop these games working. Any help would be much appreciated. Note: This problem was initially raised in the 'Emulation' section as I thought at first it was a Cedega problem. Other thread Thanks!
  4. Sorry if I'm not making myself clear. I'm not running UT2004 with Cedega. The native Linux install is not working. Perhaps I'll start a thread in a different section.
  5. Thanks for the reply. Running the 'full paid for' version of Cedega. I have also posted over at the transgaming forum, but as my problem is with UT2004 as well, it is not specific to Cedega. BTW, TuxRacer is running fine and 'glxgears' has fps over 3000, so 3D drivers working OK. Perhaps this question belongs in a different section of this forum?
  6. I recently used Mandrake Update to download and install a whole bunch of security updates, bug fixes etc. (Every update available in fact). Since I did that, when I try to run EQ via Cedega which previously worked perfectly, I can't get to the character select screen. The patcher works fine, server select is fine and it seems to get to the end of the loading process, but just as it should go to character select, the sound starts breaking up and I then get dropped back to my desktop (at EQ's resolution). I installed the recent new release of Cegeda (4.0.1) but had the same problem. Can anyone please help? I'm running MDK 10 Official; Nvidia GeForce FX5600 (latest drivers) and full paid for version of Cedega. As I mentioned it was working perfectly and I can't think of anything else that could have affected it apart from the updates I mentioned. Thanks. Edit: I just noticed this is not limited to EQ or Cedega. My UT2004 is not working either! Drops to deskto as soon as it tries to run the initial video of the Nvidia logo being broken through and the guy coming out with his mini-gun.
  7. Many thanks for your response Arctic. :) You got me going along the right lines to effect a somewhat inelegant solution. :P Your first three points were not causing the problem, but reading through the page you linked led me to do some searching on the 'MII_NOT_SUPPORTED' line of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. This led me to a thread from somone with a similar problem here. None of the suggestions there helped me, so I went back to MCC and realised I could view the log of what it was doing when I hit the 'Apply' button. The last entry in the log was: /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart Which seemed to be restarting the network :P . I added that same line to the end of my '/etc/rc.local' file and rebooted to find a perfectly working internet connection! :D Clearly that is curing symptoms rather than the disease though. I've a feeling that during boot, the eth0 interface comes up and then immediately, my old ADSL connection tries to start up (which never worked during boot, I always had to start it manually via a small shell script). I think maybe this is scuppering the proper connection via eth0, which once it is again re-started via '/etc/rc.local', works properly. Could this be the case? Can anyone tell me how I can stop the ADSL interface from trying to start up during the boot sequence? I've tried removing the connection via MCC, but it keeps coming back. Thanks again Arctic, my problem is solved. The boot sequence taking slightly longer while it waits for ADSL to fail is a minor problem! Ed.
  8. Hi folks. I have just bought one of these: Origo ADSL Modem Router to replace my speedtouch adsl modem that was working but was a lot of hassle. The problem is this. When I boot up the machine and open a browser I get messages such as this: for every site I try to connect to. In trying to solve the problem I discovered that if I go into MCC / 'Manage Connections' and untick, then retick any checkbox (so that the 'Apply' button becomes available) and then Apply the settings, everything immediately works fine. Even though the settings are exactly as they were. I'm running MDK 10 OE, the router is connected to normal BT ADSL which once it does connect as above, works perfectly. While the internet is unavailable, I am able to browse to the router's own config page via the LAN with no problem. I have the 'Start at Boot' setting ticked but it looks very much like something somewhere is not starting up at boot. I can't work out what it can be though as I can use the LAN and the router's config pages say that it is connected (still connected from prior to the latest reboot). I have tried to delete the old ADSL connection which is replaced by a LAN connection but it keeps coming back. Could this be related? Anyone have any ideas? Part of the point of getting the router was so that I didn't have to mess around connecting to my isp manually every time I booted up. At the moment it;s more hassle than ever! Any help greatly appreciated. [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
  9. Yup! EQ swallowed my social life for a couple of years! For the last year or so I've down to one or maybe two sessions a week. Then installed Linux and didn't play at all...until I installed Cedega that is!! :P Back playing again but have it under control now....honest!
  10. Everquest works well with Cedega 4. Get a minor sound glitch here and there but nothing really bad enough to be annoying. If you're looking for games to pick up and have a quick play with though, don't go for EQ. As you probably know it takes a big time investment to get the most from the game (not to mention monthly subscription fees!)
  11. Take a look at this thread: Thread Pay particular attention to the posts from 'arthur' and also post #37 from 'Havin It' and the part anout the VTI/VCI numbers needing to be reset. I had the same trouble as you (by the sound of it) and this thread solved it for me eventually. I must have read those posts 8 or 9 times very closely and eventually got it going. I have to start the connection manually be running arthur's shell script as root every time I start the system, but that is a minor inconvenience. Best of luck.
  12. Hehe! Yep! You got me. :P Windows born and bred! I WILL get to grips with the CLI. Making progress already, but sometimes when you just want something to work NOW (like when you have no write access to your home directory :P ) you go back to what you know best! I'll get there. Bad Windows habits are hard to break it seems.
  13. This is somewhat off topic but related. I recently broke my installation beyond what I could repair so in order to preserve my files, I moved my whole /home directory to a seperate location. Then I re-installed Mandy 10 OE with the same user name, and then copied the old /home directory back over the one created in the fresh install. I wasn't terribly surprised when loads of things stopped working. Although the /home directory permissions had the same user name as the one I was logged on as, I was not actually the same user who'd created the directory as far as Linux was concerned. Hence I had no write access to the /home directory. This would come as no surprise to anyone who has, like me, done any kind of system admin before, but it might be confusing to anyone fresh from a single user Windows world who has never had to worry about user IDs before. To solve this I used the 'Properties' dialogue in Konqueror as root (forgive me, I'm still more comfortable in gui land than with the CLI...but I'm making progress! :P ) to change the owner and group to 'root' - apply changes - then change them back to 'username'. I noticed that if I simply overtyped 'username' with 'username' the system didn't recognise that any change had been made and so didn't make any changes to the permissions on the file. Hence the need to change to 'root' as an intermediate step. Sorry to stray opff topic a bit. To get back on track... Rob, if you've done a standard install, I believe you should have a user with the user name you supplied as well as a group with the same name. So having the permissions as drwxr-xr-x 79 robert robert 4096 Jul 11 01:04 robert/ Is just fine. Steve has created a separate group to which he could add other users called 'xgrp'. Members of that group can read and execute files in his home directory but not alter them. chmod changes the permissions on files. 755 indicates the permissions for owner, group and others. 1st number = owner. In this case 7 = Write eXecute and Read 2nd number = group. In this case 5 = eXecute and Read only. 3rd number = others. In this case 5 = eXecute and Read only. The only difference this would make to you is that 'others' would be able to read your files as well as just executing them. Check this out for more detailed info.
  14. I can't help I'm afraid, but I'll add the fact that I'm using 10OE with a NVIDIA GeForce FX5600 and having no such problems. Latest ( 1.0-6106) driver. Maybe it will help someone else track down the problem.
  15. Someone else may well have the 'best' way, but here's what I did: Download Firefox0.9. Re-name old 'firefox' directory to 'firefox0.8'. Install new Firefox thus creating new 'firefox' directory. Running new version via the 'firefox' script, I was prompted to import bookmarks, cookies etc from old verison (or indeed any other Mozilla browser). This is the only reason this could really be called an upgrade rather than a fresh install I guess. I re-installed Flash for the new browser which I haven't found to be too tricky but I haven't gotten round to other plug ins yet. No doubt someone will now tell us that I could have done a proper upgrade much more simply! :P
  16. Or it could be that there is already another session running and you may be suffering from the problem discussed in this thread: Link to other board (post 23) (Hope no-one minds me linking to another board) I had this problem and this fix worked for me. (Note - the fix did NOT work on Firefox0.8, but worked when I switched to Firefox0.9.)
  17. I switched over to Linux a couple of weeks ago and one of the main things I missed was being able to use the thumb buttons on my mouse to go 'back' and 'forward' in my web browser. No doubt there's a way to set it up for any browser but I didn't get round to figuring it out. Last night I upgraded my Firefox from 0.8 to 0.9 and joyfully found that the thumb buttons were suddenly working again!! Just a quick tip for any ex-windoze users who's browser thumbs are being under-used! :P [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  18. Many thanks. Did not want to carry out the large(ish) download only to find this wouldn't work. I'll try it out now that I know it at least has a chance. Thanks again!
  19. Hi Guys. I have Mandrake 10 installed and as well as using it for day to day stuff I've been playing around with it a bit trying to learn more about how Linux works. Last night a made a bit of a mistake (to put it mildly) through being a bit tired and not concentrating properly. I got mixed up between a /usr/local/lib directory created by a package I installed and the /usr/lib directory. If that wasn't bad enough, in trying to fix the problem I'd created (X would not start) I then got them both mixed up with /lib ! Suffice to say, the whole system refused to start after that! Totally my own fault. I know the risks I take messing around as root, but carry on regardless as I believe that making mistakes and learning how to fix them is a good way to learn. In this case however, I have no system to use to fix the problem!! My question is this: Can I use MandrakeMove to go in to the broken system and shift some files around in an attempt to get it going again? Initially I was quite cheered when I thought of this as I thought it was bound to work but then I wondered if maybe I wouldn't have permissions to put the files back in their correct places. Does anyone know if I can get into the system with MandrakeMove and them manipulate files from the original installation? Or if not, does anyone have any ideas on how I can rescue the installation? (Basically I think I accidentally moved the /lib and /usr/lib directories away from where they're supposed to be. I think they just need moving back.) Thanks for any help! <-- Me, total clown! :P [moved from Everything Linux by spinynorman]
  20. Just registered to say thanks really. I was having enormous problems getting my Speedtouch to work with Mandrake 10 and this thread has (eventually) solved my problem. Arthur's code snippets along with one or two of the point's made by Havin It resolved it in the end. I had to add the line: alias speedtdch off to modprobe.conf twice - running the configuration tool again seemed to remove it. I had to run the tool though since putting the correct vpi/vci numbers into /etc/ppp/peers/adsl manually didn't work. Ran the tool and entered 0,38. Opened the file and as Havin It said, I found it contained 0,56! Changed it to a 38 and still no luck with the connection script. Re-booted the machine (hard to break Windows habits! :P ) and this time tried with the full script: #!/bin/bash modem_run -m -f /path/to/alcaudsl.sys pppd call adsl sleep 4 ifconfig iptables -A INPUT -i ppp0 -p tcp --syn -j DROP Instead of just the two lines. The ifconfig output didn't look any different which I still don't understand, but this time a ping to www.google.com actually got a response! You cannot imagine my elation! Thanks for youyr help guys. I would appreciate if anyone has any tips on how to run the script as root at boot time, but even having to start up the connection manually is a joy compared to no connection at all! :D
