  1. No results here either for the moment, I'll take some more time tomorrow to read info sane-usb though. It's too late in the evening to be fixing my computer...
  2. bvc, actually, I was proposed a job in Houston.... (Schlumberger mean anything to you?) And it all depends on how much they want (or think they need) you... When I was there, (2000) they were falling all over each other to hire people with my education (electrical engineer, electronics designer). Today, you practically have to beg for a job though... rough times. So yes, I agree, you give it to them as they ask it; but maybe it can't hurt to phone up and say, hey do you mind if I send it in .pdf instead of .doc. You could even have someone else call and ask, if you don't want them to think you're funny asking for something like that... So up to the topicstarter on what to do: comply and risk lesser chances, or try to get the alternative document type in and risk passing as an alternative guy (which may or may not be positive...)... Johnnyv, whatabout this script? I'd be interested...
  3. I will, that's a part of my website that I have in preparation. In spreading the good word about OSS/GNU/linux etc you have so many things to do and soo little time.... :) Hurray!! 2 down, 1 to go! Hope somebody can get you the right tip about the serial port scan. BTW, could you switch those of in the bios?
  4. I'm sorry, but my job application, and definitely my cv should not be (easily) editable by anyone. And I have never been at an interview where they actually used my documents and edited anything. It's much more likely that they just write their comments on the paper after they print it. If they really have to, they can do a screenshot of acrobat, and edit to their hearts delight in that document. Actually, I do remember one instance in which a head hunter had sent an HR department my cv stripped of my personal data; one of the two companies that they contacted is actually my current employer, who found my own application to them, and put one and one together, then politely but clearly stated that the unidentifiable person on that adapted cv was already applying with them directly, so they wouldn't need to go through the headhunter, much less pay the headhunter 5000USD.... I'm sure they would have had an easier job had I given them my cv in .doc instead of .pdf.... tough luck for them ;) PS could you please write MS and not M$, it comes across as immature, prejudiced and zealous (note that I don't think that you are that, just that many people will/may think that). Not that I disagree, but people take you more seriously if you write MS.
  5. For job applications I always use(d) .pdf. It looks more professional, and everyone has a pdf reader. (I have had some very good feedback on that) The point is, if they get it via email, they just want to be able to click on it and have it open. On top of that, those people are looking for viruses, if they just open all .doc files ..... So you can add a mention in your email about choosing the .pdf format so that they can be sure that it's safe to open, and that .doc files can be harmful... To play it real nice: "What? Your IT security officers don't mind if you just open .doc (etc) files that people send you via email? Don't you people know that virusscanners are, unfortunately, always one step behind?" (well, make sure you don't sound too much a smarta$$...) It shouldn't be too difficult to have them accept .pdf, normally one phonecall does the trick. You can also say: I'm not sure that your version of Word will be 100% compatible/show the document 100% the way it is on my screen. Which is also true, another argument to go for .pdf. (Make sure that your .pdf opens on other systems, if created in the wrong way they only work on your own system) Other than that, I can't really help you with the .doc.... if the document isn't too complex, is the result on word really that bad? I have good experiences with OOo... so maybe I'm not picky enough...

    failsafe

Michel, why would you want to have the password? This is a wrong idea of security, once someone has access to a machine (server or whatever), the security has been breached. Anyone getting to a machine can get to the data. Boot knoppix and you have full access, as PMPatrick has pointed out already. All servers at companies and universities etc. should be behind locked doors or in other ways inaccessible. That someone with access to a machine can become root or get full access does not make that system insecure!!! Don't diss Mdk or any other distro maker over that!! This is and should be the case for any system! Yes it's a feature. Suppose a sysop gets fired, before he leaves he fixes up the system so no-one can get in. Now what?? So really, it's a feature! And should not be changed. You can say: yes but with knoppix they don't have the same system running, and don't have my passwords etc. Ok: I can put in the mdk install cd's, choose upgrade, not add any software, set root password, create 1 user, with an arbitrary name. Reboot, then su to check which usernames are on the system (/home). Create users with the same name. I now also have the passwords. chown and chgrp on their files and directories if necessary. Start their mail programs. If they use 'remember password' I can get all their mail. It get's worse. If you use GPG or PGP or so, I can use that logged in as your username, and everyone will believe I really am you. So real life secure systems are those that have no known remote exploits (no known=> nobody at all knows them) and are locked away in a vault that no-one can get into. But to get to your question: Whatabout just taking out the failsafe option in /etc/lilo.conf (cp the old lilo.conf), then run lilo (so the bootmenu doesn't show it), then put the old one with the failsafe option back in place, but without running lilo. If you should ever really need it, put in the first cd, choose 'repair', then repair bootloader, et voila. Next to that, please reread aru's post, and find walhalla there, because he actually mentioned everything that you asked for afaics. Did you do: man lilo.conf to get started?
  7. No it doesn'thttp://www.meier-geinitz.de/s0ane/lists/sa...s-external.html Gregor, thanks for your reply and finding me this link on the web. I didn't mention sane includes the driver, I mentioned Mandrake does. If you reread my first post, you will see that I actually put that info in there: # ll /usr/lib/sane/libsane-hp4* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Mar 27 22:27 /usr/lib/sane/libsane-hp4200.so.1 -> libsane-hp4200.so.1.0.11* -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 66174 Feb 15 23:48 /usr/lib/sane/libsane-hp4200.so.1.0.11* Which clearly shows that the backend is present and the link properly set. So Mandrake does include the backend for the hp4200c scanner. BTW it is also in the list when you get to handpick the scanner yourself. Now back to why I can't get xsane /scanimage to use this backend....??
  8. I'm having problems getting my hp4200C scanner to work in Mdk9.1. I have found several mentions on the web that this scanner can work, and mdk includes the driver for it. I just can't get the darn thing to do anything, xsane complains 'no devices available'. Clicking on 'help' then gives some info about what could be wrong, which I all checked... With mcc + scannerdrake all I get is: have found scanner; it finds the right name (hp4200C), I configure it (select the backend, hp4200c, small 'c' instead of 'C'.. does that matter?), it tells me it has made the necessary adjustments, but then in the summary doesn't show it as a scanner..... In the hardware section it does show up as a scanner, called HP4200C... Anyway, here's some output of what I tried: $ sane-find-scanner # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that # you have loaded a SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter. found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0, product=0x0105) at /dev/usb/scanner0 found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0, product=0x0105) at libusb:001:004 found USB scanner (vendor=0x0471, product=0x0312) at libusb:003:003 # A USB device was detected. This program can't be sure if it's really # a scanner. If it is your scanner, it may or may not be supported by # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage. # Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports can't be # detected by this program. # You may want to run this program as root to find all devices. Once you # found the scanner devices, be sure to adjust access permissions as # necessary. and $ scanimage -L No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different, check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages). ?? so why doesn't it see it? BTW: $ cat /etc/sane.d/hp4200.conf # Options dor the hp4200 backend # Autodetect the HP4200c usb 0x03f0 0x0105 device libusb:001:003 #/dev/usbscanner /dev/usb/scanner0 #/dev/scanner Note: I added the line about the device (after seeing others had added it with good results)... if it's not there, the result is the same... $ cat /etc/sane.d/dll.conf hp4200 The scanner is seen by the system: $ tail /proc/bus/usb/devices I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=03(HID ) Sub=01 Prot=02 Driver=hid E: Ad=81(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 1 Ivl=1ms Also, the backend really exists: # ll /usr/lib/sane/libsane-hp4* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Mar 27 22:27 /usr/lib/sane/libsane-hp4200.so.1 -> libsane-hp4200.so.1.0.11* -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 66174 Feb 15 23:48 /usr/lib/sane/libsane-hp4200.so.1.0.11* Oh and sure: # ll /dev/usb/scanner0 crw-rw---- 1 robert usb 180, 48 Jan 1 1970 /dev/usb/scanner0 The device exists (and is attributed to my username) and the module is loaded: # lsmod | grep scanner scanner 10904 0 usbcore 72992 1 [scanner pwc usbmouse hid printer ehci-hcd usb-uhci] And by the way, I also tried as root, and I also tried telling xsane directly (as user and root): xsane -d hp4200:/dev/usb/scanner0 and # scanimage -d hp4200:/dev/usb/scanner0 scanimage: open of device hp4200:/dev/usb/scanner0 failed: Operation not supported Without any success.... So how do I tell the system/xsane to just scan? :(
  9. SuGa, congrats and happy it works for you. The bad thing about upgrade is that it doesn't always work. And (to me) even worse: the remedy is usually: reinstall. That brings me to one of the reasons for not wanting to use that other platform: there you have the three R's -- Retry Reboot Reinstall Anything should be done to keep that method away from linux. The right way to do things in linux is described by the three C's (this is mine guys, but feel free to copy ;) ) Check Communicate Correct Check: that you're using/doing things in the proper way, with google, this board, etcetc. Communicate: about what the problem can be/was, how it can be solved for now and how it can be avoided and/or solved in the future. Correct: fix the stuff for yourself and make sure the program/distro maker corrects it in the next version. In the case of upgrade: it should not be used to upgrade from one installation/version to another/the next. But maybe: from one hardware config to another; imagine to have your monitor break and having a loner that is less performant, ie. that can't handle the display settings that the other one had (resolution, refresh rate)... etcetc.
  10. I agree with most of what has been said, but not all. BTW tomb, don't worry about what I said, I just repeated stuff about your first message because I couldn't get my message across to ndeb,... ascii is such a limited form of communication... oh if we were only on a nice palmtree lined sandy beach with a couple of beers (or whatever you like), such discussions would be over in seconds... ;) Just keep posting whenever you have something to say or ask. BTW don't know about this freeze when scanning serial ports (repeating it here since maybe others missed that question), maybe you could try with some boot-options?? Don't know which ones though.. As for the upgrade stuff, I mostly used that whenever I had upgraded my hardware, from one graphics card to another, adding a tv card, etc (and in the beginning to install more software, I didn't know I could use the installer section in mcc). I did upgrade from 8.2 to 9.0 and it worked; as soon as I found out that my chipset was recognised (which it wasn't in 8.2 so I had to recompile the kernel to have dma which I needed to watch dvds which is one of the main reasons for me to have a computer) I just trashed that upgraded partition with a clean install. So it can come in handy, but not for what it seems to be made to do. True but not true. RH is front runner because they are American (as opposed to non-american, not specifically French) and know how to / can deal with US companies. I have worked in a French/multinational company, with large US parts, and I can tell you, in the US things are sometimes so different that a European management/employees will not handle things the right way if they haven't learnt how to. I currenly work in Switzerland in a company that is also very large and has big parts in the US, and here too we know that the american ways of dealing with things are different than what europeans know/are used to. Second, RH has always focused on the corporate market. Which is something that from the start Mdk did not focus on; they started by making a RH with KDE. KDE is desktop. RH was and is server oriented. Now that Mdk was getting success via the desktop into the server arena, RH changed their tune. Up to 18months ago, they wouldn't and didn't really mention the desktop. They have stated time and again that the server is the right (and more or less only) place for linux. Then suddenly they changed their tune. BTW, this is one of the reasons that I don't like RH (emotionally, I have plentyof logical, but small reasons). Mdk has always focused on the home user. The one, unfortunately that doesn't pay if he doesn't have to, in most cases. Of all the people I know who use RH all of them bought a pack, dito for SuSE, not so for Mdk. Do you think that corporations care about small install / configuration inconveniences of RH (no mp3 etcetc)? I work at one such corporation, and they will only do RH (once the time comes, for the moment it's being looked at). Why? Because RH is hot in corporate america. They are in with HP, IBM et al. Unix software (very expensive stuff) is being ported to linux as we type. And they are putting the mention: we support RH. So all unix to linux transitions will go to RH. So, RH strategy is definitely the right one. Mdk will always be smaller. They are focusing on the home user, the small guy, who has no cash, and now the small companies, who have no unix gurus. Those with gurus will all go with RH, since RH is promising support, is backed by IBM and HP etcetc. So less risk if you advice RH. Everyone else is using that, so you as a guru won't get fired if you advice the same. Low risk. In the mean time, RH is catching up fast with Mdk in terms of install/configuration etc. One other thing: RH is very professional, and aimed at professionals. Mdk is for home users who want something easy to use. Needless to say that doesn't rake in the money in the same way; it's more a community effort than any other of the 3 big ones: RH, SuSE, Mdk. So yes, less professional... So RH will remain the front runner, because of their strategy from the start, and current position. BTW companies all buy their software. No big company uses linux without having payed for the pack, they are too used to paying and want the support guarantee, even if they don't need it. SuSE will be less used than Mdk since it's not (so) free, but count on preinstalled SuSE sometime very soon. To me, the survival of Mdk means the most. If they can succeed, the FLOSS model is definitely proven. And that prove would be the best thing since sliced bread.
  11. SoulSe, if ecasound, glame or whatever don't work, could you at least try to find out what's wrong with those and try to convince developers about what is missing and should be added/changed? As the email said, your favourite program is not going to be ported anytime soon. zero0w, you're right, I was not really thinking: without development for MSwin most commercial software makers wouldn't have bread to eat. I was more thinking of home devvers who make some freeware stuff or so... Where is "thac's mdk rpm page" ? BTW I doubt it would have something as serious as the software I was talking about -- Cadence and Mentor are the two packages (well, software houses) that most electronics/chipdesigners use to make silicon; I'd think that 80 or 90% of all chips (not necessarily of all chipdesigns though) are made with software of either one or the other. Not something you find packaged for mdk.. ;) (BTW I recently heard what a designer seat costs where I work: 35000USD. And that's mainly software licenses...)
  12. ndeb, so I guess the wise thing to do for Mdk is to put a warning the moment people get to choose what they want, install or upgrade.... which they won't put there, since it would raise the newbies eyebrows and possibly scare some out of touching mdk again. Which is sure to happen to some unlucky few who actually try the feature (hey how did this whole topic start anyway... :) ), but maybe Mdk is counting on those numbering very low... I don't see how it can ever work if people don't have all 3 cds of the newer version but had all 3 on the older/currently installed one... Never thought about that, I live in a spoiled part of the world, never crossed my mind anyone would attempt an install with only 1cd. Actually, it's because I'm spoiling my part of the world, everybody I know who has mandrake has gotten it off of me... ;) Anyway, I will put comments about upgrading on my website, I hope others do the same; maybe someone should put a sticky in the install section at the top? Because in hints & tips it is not necessarily found... To tomb, as you can see people are falling over each other to help out, so if you haven't given up on Mdk try again and let us know how far you get, and as ndeb said, even if you switch to another linux, and run into problems... Like I said, this forum/people here are great.
  13. Thats your attitude problem. Didn't know I had one... That was not however what I was commenting on. I was more commenting on the reaction of SoulSe, and other reactions to his. Ok :) Point taken, first check if the patient is really dead... Though in my analogy, I was more thinking of a situation where you know the patient has deceased from the rotten sight and smell.... but let's not go there. Well, read my first post; I see a bunch of words as a title, and I mentioned I didn't like the wording. So to me (and to others) maybe mainly because of the title this post seemed to be bitching. Especially because of the closing comment. Not sure what u mean. I meant that I have seen that you are not an undivided happy Mdk user, since you have experienced problems that should have been fixed but weren't. Agree entirely. He could have and he didn't because its his choice. But the post was enough on-topic to stay where it originally was. Ok. Not my call, and I never voiced an opinion on that as far as I know... I was commenting on the title and the contents, and on the reaction of SoulSe amongst others. So I put a more refined statement against the "9.1 is Disappointing (even a disaster)" title. Anyway, back on topic,.... :) To the original poster: I just included a statement on my website. Now only to get all unaware users to read that... ;) I agree there should be a warning somewhere (tips & tricks), but the problem is, people won't read it until it's too late... Another thing, how can we make sure they improve on this for the future? Or can the update option hardly ever work properly? (I know it can, I've used it from 8.2 to 9.0) Config files are in /etc and for me du -s /etc tells me I have 19MB in there. So if need be, you can backup your /etc to a subdir in your homedir or so, (you do have a separate partition for /home I hope), then do the reinstall and when you find things are not working, you can check in /home/[username]/etc for the contents of your old config file to compare and make modifications of the new ones accordingly.
  14. And how will you prove that ? Does one have to put the words ASSISTANCE NEEDED/DEMANDED/REQUIRED in the post ? If you are really so strict then dozens of posts in this forum will have to be treated same as well (if you can apply this criteria strictly and consistently). Well, maybe, but I just don't see the point of trying to help someone who closes with saying: It's very good though that you and others are. Read my final phrase again please. I was only commenting on the fact that I really understand a reaction such as that of SoulSe, even though I would never write that (because I wouldn't bother probably). They don't have to motivate in any way. Just reporting the problem itself implies that the person needs help. Imagine calling 911 and being refused help because "the person did not ask for help explicitly". Nonsense. 911 (or 112 in my part of the world) is the number for help, but it is more often called by people who are just dialling the wrong number, by accident or without knowing that they were not supposed to use 911 but some other number. The starter post looked to me like someone had died. Sorry, don't bother 911, call the morgue. In forum speak: post to the right forum. If you just want to bitch that it doesn't work, but have resigned in trying to fix things and want to let off steam... Why motivate? Well, I don't know about you, but I certainly don't feel inclined to help if someone doesn't ask for it and does not sound open to any advice I might have. Now if the poster would have written something like: this bloody thing doesn't work, how can you all be so happy (or not, seen your posts, ndeb... :( ) about it, how the he|| do I get it to work too...... I didn't mean he should ask politely "or else", I meant: he could have put things in different wordings to make clear that insightful comments would be appreciated and that he would still try to get things fixed. Which, actually he did in later posts. My 2 rappen.
  15. Ok, I don't want to get religious about mandrake (helpme helpme), but to their credit things have worked very well for many. Check out this board, and many other boards and find out how many problems people have. Then realise that those places are the only places where all problemhavers unite. So what I don't like about this topic is the title. Mandrake 9.1 installation doesn't do what it should when you choose upgrade. Work to do for the developers, and it should be made clear to people that the upgrade option is to be avoided or at least treated with distrust. As in: feel free to try, but first do a complete install before coming to us for help. Second thing: there was no request for any assistance. But sometimes this board is too nice,.... I visit some boards where that first post would have gotten locked without any questions asked, simply for not following the guidelines (that on this board are much less strict, which is why I put a link to this board on my website and not to those other boards). To the poster: mandrake 9.1 worked fine for me on both machines where I installed, so it is not bad in general. It didn't work properly on 3 machines you tried it on, so it is not good in all cases either. But howabout just posting: "I'm trying to install on this machine, hardware:..... Previously using:.... Symptoms:..... What should I do?" Tackle things one by one, and see how far you get. If you can't work out your problems, stay with mdk9.0 or try RH9, Suse8.2, Debian or whatever. Why would people even bother to try to help you if you're not motivating them to do so in a positive way (instead of: y'all use Mdk9.1 but it sucks bigtime, saying, hey for me it's not so great, how can I get to the nirvana of linux that you're enjoying??).. Even so, this forum / people here are really great! My 2 cts.
  16. Disc 3 contains the kernel-source, which you really need if you are going to use the nvidia drivers. Plus cd 2 and 3 contain 2x650MB of programs...
  17. Thanks scoopy, just the kind of feedback I was hoping for. You're right on all counts, thrash=>trash, the .png being a bit large. Guess that also counts for the background image. It will be changed soon, next time I upload the site. Including some remarks about the new way of installing NVIDIA drivers, I'll just link to DOlson's site/page about that. I will add a section about the .iso, and also where to get it, sometime soon, but since I mainly wrote this for friends and colleagues for whom I make copies all the time, I never thought of that... Now that it's a public site, I may have to think bigger than that... :) Keep 'm coming guys! and girls!
  18. SoulSe, sorry for going offtopic in your topic, but it does have to do with linux on the desktop whether good audio editors for linux will become a reality sometime soon. Good to hear someone is happy with some of what is available. zero0w, Agree on China, many people, potentially many linuxusers, but so much pirating, that they will hardly count as a hard argument... The point being, whatever they use, they are not likely to generate a real income for the software houses anytime soon.... Non-internet connected linux users are going to be a bit more rare, wouldn't know how to get info and help myself out with the net,... but I can imagine there are people who surf at work (win) to find info on how to do stuff at home (lin). But not enough to change the scale of things. I also agree on the number of linux users that will very likely look entirely different by the end of the year, or sometime next year. MacOS is maybe a real good product, but the ace in the hole is the fanaticism among mac users (well, most that I ever met) that even now continue to maintain that mac has the faster hardware and software..... These people are almost more fanatic about their macs than I about linux/open source (though I don't talk about it at parties... yet.... :) ) Read the article about debunking the myth; not bad, but it fails to notice that there is really a very small market, and the money is still on the MSwin side... What I do know, is that linux is taking over stuff, both from windows and unix, in companies worldwide. I am an electronics designer, and I know that all design software from Cadence for instance is being ported as we speak, and should be available (all their software) on linux before this summer....! Mozilla and OOo are the true killer apps, they make it possible to switch one app at a time, and another later, and then change the platform. So things can be tackled one at a time. Personally, I try to get anyone I know who knows a bit about computers, to switch. Well, dualboot, because you don't want to burn all bridges behind you. Which is also my motivation to create my website. Make it easy for people to switch, help them out. Anyone who can install any OS, and maintain it somewhat, can do so for linux. Next time I have some time, I'm creating a website on why not to use MSwin. The message is often not really coming across, so wording is very important. Basically, developing for MS is supporting their monopoly. Using MS software is supporting their monopoly (because you count in the statistics). Supporting the MS Monopoly is shooting yourself in the foot in the long term. As a software vendor, you cannot compete with MS, they will extinguish you. As a user, they will milk you. So I try to get a feel with colleagues and I got most of them who have some interest in computers to switch to linux. But then, most are unix users at work, they like the cli and find it cool that they can be root at home (which we would like at work but have no business being as designers/users and not being CAD support...).. The big change will come when you can buy linux preinstalled all around. I'm looking into that too, but actually need more time... Personally, 2002 was the linux on the desktop year, anyone putting it any later than that is just behind.... ;) Next milestone is the Windows-off-the-desktop-year. 2007 anyone? ;) (I know, won't happen and as far as I'm concerned, doesn't need to, as long as they have less than 50% marketshare by then..) Time for bed.... BTW can't get to the site in your sig, what's up with that?
  19. Agree with you SoulSe, wine is not a solution. And if you really must use this windows program, then use it in its native environment. zero0w, check googles zeitgeist: http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html, and you will see that linux marketshare really is way behind. Note that google doesn't just check for the browser id but for the OS id which is generally not faked (but surely can be), so much more reliable. What is very important is the number of old windows versions still in use. Those should/could be changed into linux, at least part of those. But none of this helps linux get good audio editing software... BTW I like the GIMP, only used PS very few times, and I'm nowhere near a professional, but the point is, people who want to do photo editing on linux will use the GIMP, and not consider buying PS anymore once it's out. Exceptions will prove this... ;) Agree with your multi platform strategy btw...
  20. Your fan either always runs at the same speed, or can slow down, depending on whether it's a thermally controlled fan and if your motherboard can do anything about the fanspeed. In your case it doesn't change, so you can't change the fanspeed. That being said, of course you can buy a thermally controlled fan. Check the link to the Athlon/Duron temp page on the links page, there you can find the right commands to use for whatever type of mobo/chipset you have.
  21. Ok, it's not finished, but some/most parts are close to what I intended. Basically, I made this site to help friends and colleagues to move over to linux from whatever (yeah right) other platform they are currently using. Got 5 people to switch to Mdk, some of them paying members, so good for mdk. Anyway, please let me know if the site would be enough (clear enough) for non-stupid non-linux computer users to start with linux/mdk. Are any crucial parts missing? All comments are welcome, non-constructive ones are sent to /dev/null There is a whole installation process overview, with screenies (most of the screens that you come across during install), and a config page. So how do you think it looks, is there anything missing, are things correct etcetc? http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr Oh and be sure to send me the link to your linux oriented website (mandrake or not, all is ok), if it's not on the link page yet.
  22. Great, now it says: (In my native language, Dutch, mank means limp, as in having trouble walking..) Pls fix.. :)
  23. Did any of you try glame? I used it some time ago, it has plenty of tracks you can edit in the same project, you can use filters and effects. I haven't used it in some time, don't know if it's still being developed, but their goal was: become the GIMP of audio editing.. Just checked their site, had a new version out in Nov 02 so not too old, apparently still got devvers working on it. About the tiny marketshare: well, apple has a tiny marketshare, compared to MS, but Adobe still ports, because Mac seems to be the platform of choice (or used to be). Linux does not have a small marketshare compared to apple, although still smaller. And by not porting, they are just keeping the marketshare down, until there is an OSS alternative, and then who are they going to sell to?? So bad management on one hand, low risk taking on the other. Not sure what I would do as a company...
  24. Small question: can you be positive that your hardware is ok? I'm not questioning the burner or cdr's; you could try to rip the first cd to an image, which should then have the same md5sum (to make sure once more that the cd is correct), or mount the cd, mount the image, and compare the files. By now, I'm suspecting that you have a bad ide channel on the machine. Or did you install (well, try) on several machines? Can you tell what machine this is, how the cdrom and hd's are hooked up, what mobo/chipset this is etcetc.? Furthermore, please set all bios settings to failsafe, and then to the usual proper settings for the few things that are normally not set properly when choosing failsafe: pnpOS: no, shadow video bios: no, memory timings to slower/st, anything between graphics and rest that looks like tweaking options (fast read write turnaround, etc etc): disable Hope this helps...
  25. Burning at lower speed is not always (but definitely sometimes) helpful, and there have been cases reported where it was actually better to burn at the highest speed. Personally, I would be suspicious of the cd-r media that are being used. I mean, if the md5sums are ok, and the burner is ok.....
