  1. You could also just put an analog cable between your cdrom and the cd input on the audio card. Some drives spin up fast and noise when going the digital path, and it uses more cpu power and bandwidth on the (s)ata bus; plenty of advantages are to be had with a simple analog cable.
  2. First thing: Mandriva 2005 LE is the latest download version of Mandrake/Mandriva - due to improvements especially (but not only) on the USB storage front, I'd really recommend to get that, instead of 10.1. Second, to burn an iso image, you should use that option in your burning application; it may go by any name that hints at the same thing, such as: burn image, burn cd iso, burn ... Well, you get the idea... If you managed to find this option and it didn't work, explain what you did more in detail. Last thing: scarecrow, I don't see how your comment might be helpful - there are other parts for chitchatting and talking nonsense...
  3. I used: rpm -e postfix --nodeps to be able to install the other stuff, as per: http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/MandrivaQmail Getting on with the rest now...
  4. I just got the qmailtoaster stuff (downloaded the srpms from the site), but there are quite a few conflicts, due to qmail packages being in conflict with postfix, and without postfix, lots of Mdk packages depend on that: # urpmi /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586/vpopmail-toaster-5.4.10-1.2.6mdk.i586.rpm The following packages have to be removed for others to be upgraded: drakconf-10.2-5mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied menudrake >= 0.7.2-1mdk, due to unsatisfied drakxtools > 10.2-0.34mdk, due to unsatisfied userdrake >= 1.2-1mdk, due to unsatisfied harddrake-ui > 10-12mdk) drakfirsttime-1.2-0.1mdk.noarch (due to unsatisfied drakxtools >= 10.1-0.17mdk, due to unsatisfied hwdb-clients >= 0.15.1-1mdk) drakwizard-2.15-6mdk.noarch (due to unsatisfied drakxtools >= 9.1-0.4mdk) drakxtools-10.2-24.2.102mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied drakxtools-newt == 10.2-24.2.102mdk) drakxtools-newt-10.2-24.2.102mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied msec >= 0.38-5mdk) harddrake-10.2-24.2.102mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied drakxtools-newt == 10.2-24.2.102mdk, due to missing hwdb-clients) harddrake-ui-10.2-24.2.102mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied drakxtools == 10.2-24.2.102mdk) hwdb-clients-0.16.1-1mdk.noarch (due to unsatisfied drakxtools >= 10-32mdk) mailman-2.1.5-15mdk.i586 (due to missing smtpdaemon[*]) mailx-8.1.1-24mdk.i586 (due to missing smtpdaemon) mdkonline-1.2-1.1.102mdk.noarch (due to missing drakxtools-newt, due to unsatisfied hwdb-clients >= 0.15.1-1mdk) menudrake-0.7.6-4mdk.i586 (due to missing drakxtools-newt) msec-0.45.1-1mdk.i586 (due to missing mailx) postfix-2.1.5-6mdk.i586 (due to conflicts with vpopmail-toaster-5.4.10-1.2.6mdk.i586) rfbdrake-1.0-8mdk.noarch (due to unsatisfied drakxtools >= 9.2-0.15mdk) rpmdrake-2.10-4.2.102mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied drakxtools >= 10.2-0.22mdk) userdrake-1.2.1-2mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied drakxtools >= 9.2-0.15mdk) (y/N) So I tried to deinstall postfix: # urpme postfix To satisfy dependencies, the following 17 packages will be removed (61 MB): drakconf-10.2-5mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied menudrake >= 0.7.2-1mdk, due to unsatisfied drakxtools > 10.2-0.34mdk, due to unsatisfied userdrake >= 1.2-1mdk, due to unsatisfied harddrake-ui > 10-12mdk) drakfirsttime-1.2-0.1mdk.noarch (due to unsatisfied drakxtools >= 10.1-0.17mdk, due to unsatisfied hwdb-clients >= 0.15.1-1mdk) drakwizard-2.15-6mdk.noarch (due to unsatisfied drakxtools >= 9.1-0.4mdk) drakxtools-10.2-24.2.102mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied drakxtools-newt == 10.2-24.2.102mdk) drakxtools-newt-10.2-24.2.102mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied msec >= 0.38-5mdk) harddrake-10.2-24.2.102mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied drakxtools-newt == 10.2-24.2.102mdk, due to missing hwdb-clients) harddrake-ui-10.2-24.2.102mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied drakxtools == 10.2-24.2.102mdk) hwdb-clients-0.16.1-1mdk.noarch (due to unsatisfied drakxtools >= 10-32mdk) mailman-2.1.5-15mdk.i586 (due to missing smtpdaemon[*]) mailx-8.1.1-24mdk.i586 (due to missing smtpdaemon) mdkonline-1.2-1.1.102mdk.noarch (due to missing drakxtools-newt, due to unsatisfied hwdb-clients >= 0.15.1-1mdk) menudrake-0.7.6-4mdk.i586 (due to missing drakxtools-newt) msec-0.45.1-1mdk.i586 (due to missing mailx) postfix-2.1.5-6mdk.i586 rfbdrake-1.0-8mdk.noarch (due to unsatisfied drakxtools >= 9.2-0.15mdk) rpmdrake-2.10-4.2.102mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied drakxtools >= 10.2-0.22mdk) userdrake-1.2.1-2mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied drakxtools >= 9.2-0.15mdk) Is this OK? 5. Good, prism54! I had a card with this chipset... I borrowed it to test on Mdk. Actually, it was the exact same card I think. I think your first problem is that you have to add the firmware, follow the instructions at my 2005le config page: http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/configu...e.html#wireless read the steps for the prism54 card there. (Below the atmel card info.) Tell me how far you get. In any case, you need to get rid of the 'not ready' if you issue the iwconfig command... Without the firmware in the correct location, this card won't work at all, but as you can see, it does get recognised and somewhat 'talks' with the system. If you would check the system logfiles when you plug in the card, you could have found this - naturally, _you_ can't guess that that's where you have to look. Just for kicks, you can try this command, as root: tail -f /var/log/messages and let it run, then plug in the card, and see what the system logs say. If you want to stop the messages and get the prompt back, hit ctrl-c. Hope this helps.
  6. Hi absurd, I don't have much time until after the weekend, but could you check my mdk10.1 and mdv05le config pages for the various wireless cards that I discuss? http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/configuration2005le.html and http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/configuration101.html I never put anything in the sense of rts/cts or fragmentation, ... just leave it empty,... Anyway, we need to know what wireless card/chipset you have. Is it pcmcia or built in? What's the product name? How does Mandrake/Mandriva call it? BTW, the latest version of Mandriva is 2005le, if you're still on 10.0 or 10.1 you may want to get that latest version first... What do you get if you give the following commands (hit alt-F2 and type 'konsole', then inside that give your commands): su (give root password) ifconfig and: iwconfig ?
  7. Jet2k5, you're right on the issue being with MS IE. Here's a plan - since I can't debug it due to not having IE at my disposal (yeah, I do have access to machines with IE at work - but there I don't have my development environment), I think I'm going to ask assistance from MS in this matter. Let's see how good their support really is. I'll keep you updated if ever I really do that... ;)
  8. Thanks for the feedback. About the site not showing ok in IE - that it crashes is new to me, I just know that IE users have to scroll to the right to read the text....: I'm willing to accept any help possible on this issue - the point is: I don't have IE, so I can't really debug. The issues are with the CSS stylesheet. So don't bug me about it, send me working code for IE and I'll fix the site. :D (After all, it's not like I didn't try, Adrianovaroli tried to help - see the topic elsewhere on this forum - and IE5 did render the page fine - so MS engineers managed to mess it up later...) Oh, one rule applies: I will not break my code. It must be valid html and css. And of course the site must stay as it is for non-IE users. Lastly: if people really turn away from Linux due to my site not presenting well on IE, I think fixing my site is not what will get them into Linux nirvana - they will bail out at the next turn (some installation problem, some non working periferal, not immediately finding a substitute for a certain program, etc)... If you are not confronted with any hurdles Linux can be a breeze, easier than anything, but usually people do find themselves confronted with issues.... and then you have to really want it to get it and go through with it. As for losing readers to my pages, I have no ads there and it doesn't cost me any money if less readers come there. With over 670.000 hits, I'd say it's all fine with me...
  9. I just uploaded the configuration page for Mandriva 2005 LE: http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/configuration2005le.html and I uploaded the installation walkthrough: http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/installmdv05le.html some time ago. If you have any comments or feedback, let me know in this thread please. Thanks and enjoy!
  10. Well, those options didn't do anything for me, still the same problem...
  11. I tried this kmobiletools (urpmi kmobiletools does the trick, it's in contrib), if you install from the command line you get the instructions to connect - this doesn't work with sdp by the way. you have to use the mentioned rfcomm command, after which the /dev/rfcomm0 will exist. Didn't work for me unfortunately...
  12. Quick add-on question: what HOWTO is that you're referring to, adamw?
  13. Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to give these module options a try. Thanks daniewicz for the info that it works fine for you.
  14. I managed to set up multisync with syncml, but the problem is that my phone doesn't allow to set up the http access stuff - I don't know how the proprietary Samsung windows software syncs, but this syncml expects an http server address and port - which the phone doesn't offer or I don't know how to get it to offer that...
  15. We can't do anything about it??? Nonsense. We are doing something about it. I'm not buying any system with MSWin preloaded/licence included. If everyone would do that (desktops without OS or with Linux preloaded are really not hard to come by, granted, you have to look harder for laptops but they're out there), it would soon change. You, me, all others here, we all have our wallets to vote with. This is not democratic, it's about financial sense. As long as people still buy from Dell because the small guy offering Linux laptops don't have worldwide guarantee, nothing will change. So, change the world by voting otherwise.
  16. Most programs I use have been mentioned, some haven't: cadence icfb calibre vlm sandworks waveviewer and my guess is no one knows those programs. Ah well, they are what puts bread on my table, and no, I couldn't afford a license for any of these, luckily my company pays for it. (You think MS licenses are expensive? Some programs I use have yearly license fees over 100.000 USD...) Linux is now mission critical where I work, running on Opteron servers. Who'd have though that of Linux and AMD 5 years ago? :)
  17. foot - I really liked that first reply of yours, very direct and to the point. :D
  18. I did a webpage on Laptops with Linux some time ago, find it on my site - I tried to turn it into a challenge. Right now, there's HP with ubuntu laptops - not even preloaded, but they come with an ubuntu disc... everything works with that disc, which has a modified kernel and modules for the laptop hardware. Some laptop resellers like emperorlinux throw in an MSWin license in the box - no way to get any laptop without it (although now they may resell the HP ones),... in France there are a number of laptops with preloaded Linux, and no money going to MSWin. The guy at Errex was also offering those. The one big problem: many people have a big mouth, but supporting those little guys who make it happen, no way, just complaining about how the big vendors don't offer Linux only (or MS free) laptops, and then keep buying Dell or whatnot. BTW if you ask me, where the hell is IBM if they're such good friends with the Linux/FLOSS community???!!!
  19. I'm having a weird issue with Konqueror; if I surf to certain pages, for instance: http://315.fiberworld.nl/d500/ everything hangs, except the mouse still moves. I can't ctrl-alt-backspace anymore, or ctrl-alt-f1, so I have to go in remotely and kill X. If I use the nv driver instead of the nvidia driver, this doesn't happen (I just need thenvidia driver since the nv driver doesn't give a nice 50Hz 1280x1024 signal to my projector), and with Firefox things are fine too. But I just really like Konqueror, and besides, this is Linux where things should work andif they don't they should be fixed, right? My question: can others who use nvidia (the proprietary driver - I'm using 7661 and also had this with 7174, and if I recall correctly I also saw this with 7167) give this website a try with Konqueror? Edit: I just logged on onto a different user account with gnome, and the same thing happens, with konqueror at that exact page.... :(
  20. I've managed to exchange data with my Bluetooth phone (Samsung SGH-D500) and MDV2005LE without much difficulty. All I had to do is urpmi kdebluetooth (if I remember correctly) and start the kbluetoothd from the menu. Then browsing with konqueror to bluetooth:/ shows the devices and spd:/[mobile phone name] (which you get if you click the device name in the bluetooth:/ results) shows the various connection options: OBEX ftp transfer, OBEX push (or was it pop), BT serial chat, and then some. But now I would like to synchronise my agenda, address book, etc. I have seen/found/looked at multisync, and had a look at kitchensync, but I just don't see how I should connect and what programs I should use to access data/sync. Googling for 'sync bluetooth linux' and variations thereof don't really lead to a clear instructive response. Note: my phone supposedly uses the syncml standard/protocol, so it should be possible to sync it...
  21. Guys, are none of you having any issues? No ideas either? Just not using nfs?
  22. Ok, I've mounted the nfs share on my laptop, and there it seems to work fine. So the issue is on the client machine...
  23. Hi guys, I hope someone knows how to go about debugging my setup, I'm all out of ideas... Here's the situation: cablemodem -- server -- switch -- home net with several machines (FYI, the server is connected to the cablemodem with 2 nics via a switch and has 2 ip addresses, but that's not really relevant) I mount some partitions of the server onto my workstation, and until now I never had any issues, depending on the harddrive I'd get between 5 and 11MB/s over the network when copying files. Watching a movie or playing music on my workstation with the data residing on the server was never a problem. Until now - if I try to open a movie or copy a file, I get to see the following transfer speeds (as per gkrellm): something around 5 or 600KB/s for one sec, then nothing, then for one sec around 100KB/s, then ... nothing. Even if I wait for a long time. Note: I can get over 10MB/s if I connect via ftp. Connecting with ssh or vnc is also no problem at all. My network and nics are therefore fine. I have tried to debug this, at some point after restarting some services (nfslock, nfs, shorewall, portmap, network) in some order on the server, and restarting netfs on my client/ws I did manage to get things to work fine - for copying one 600MB file over. A few moments later the system went back to it's slow/broken behaviour... I have not been able to get it to do the fast (well, normal) transfer via nfs anymore, even whilst trying restarting services in all the same ways, by now I have tried all orders twice or more. Oh, I have also rebooted and such... no improvements either... I have added alias net-pf-10 off to my modprobe.conf which shuts off ip-v6 but to no avail - still the same. What can I say, other than:

VeeDubb, I ran into that installing-from-hd-with-iso-on-home-partition- file ownership properties issue too, please comment on and vote for this bug: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15195
  25. adamw - thanks for the info. My way of doing is slightly different for a number of reasons. For one, I don't have the same things installed on my machines, and I want to keep control. So I just avoid to download things twice. Second, if I decide to reinstall one machine, I can easily do it, and won't have to re-download a single package from the web. This I do sometimes when I write a report, to make sure I really have the same starting point as those who just have the install media (other than that I won't have to download stuff). But thanks for the tips on keeping machines in sync. I will definitely use that fanout thingy! That sounds like very handy. BTW devries, I have setup my xmms playing on my server so that each song change a wav gets created with the artist, album and songname, which I can get played by pressing a specific key on the IR remote. I have also created the same for a radio station we like to listen to, who don't put info on RDS (they want people to go to their website to see what's playing, and offer links to buy the albums...) so my script just grabs the webpage and java pages, parses it, and greps for the artist, album and track title, then passes it through festival speech synthesiser and this file I can play with the remote on demand.
