  1. Thank you. My Ram memory is 4GB. I remember the old days when swap was supposed to be twice as much as the physical RAM you had. So with 4GB I nee only 1GB Swap space? Will it be a problem if I leave it as is (ahem, having a 500GB HD is great as you don't nedd to worry about some petty unused 8/10 GB, ahem)?
  2. Oh I see. Yes I agree I was forced to install Win7 because of my Job, but I don't like it either. A lot of software does not work under it. Here is my disc layout. The info is in spanish, so I provided a translation. The spanish terms are marked with * and + Disco* /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders Units = cilindros** of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x000e517a Disposit. 3. You mean 'fortunately', right? Honestly I prefer Linux and only need Windows for my work. The other needs are perfeclty covered by Linux and OSS applications. How do I check that my partitiontable is not weird or corrupted? Should I post a screenshot of my Partitions as shown by MCC?
  4. Hello, I have been told on another forum that Windows 7 gets corrupted by GRUB, so I decided to ask people here since you are Linux experts. Can you please explain how or why it happens and if you have discoverd any way to fix this issue. I need to dual boot at work so it's necessary to have both. Thank you
  5. Hello, First, I don't know if I have posted in the right section, so please correct me if I'm wrong. Second, this problem is both Windows and Linux relates, so I'm not sure if it is OK to ask for help here. Now: Because of my job I HAVE to use Windows 7. The problem is that it broke down on its own and now I have to reinstall it. That would be simple, but the problem is that I need that damned 100mb partition and it won't create it if there are other partitions in the HD. So here comes the trouble, I need to reinstall Win7 and that annoying partition, but I have to delete Mandriva as well. I have an idea: I could make an image of the Mandriva partition and then delete everything, next, I would install Win7 (it'd create the 100mb partition) and then recreate the entire partition layout I had before. Finally, I would try to replant the Mandriva partition (from the image) into the same partition so that it would not notice that it was moved around. Do you think this would work or is there a better way to do it? My fear is losing my Mandriva installation (not just the files) or restoring Win7 without being able to access Mandriva ever again. Help please... Edit: nevermimd, if anyone is ever in the same situation as I go here: http://www.sevenforu...ark-active.html http://www.sevenforu...rate-times.html http://www.sevenforu...e-cd.html?ltr=P It can be done from Windows without deleting Mandriva or touching it at all. The only problem will be that Windows tends to kill GRUB when you reinstall, but you can restore it using the installlation disc.
  6. Confirmed: the problem are the discs. I'm ripping a newer disc right now with Kaudiocreator and Rubyripper. Thank you all.
  7. Um, I'm still missing some icons. And in GNOMEit says there are no installed templates... Is it the same problem? I have installed everything, I think...
  8. You might be right! Yesterday I was able to rip something. The problem must be the CD's. I don't think it's the CD reader because I have 2 and both encounter the same problem. Besides the CDs I'm trying to rip are too old (more than 10 years old). Or perhaps there is some sort of ancient copy protection system? Anyway, can you tell me which is better this Rubyripper you mention, KDE ripper, Grip or Sound Juicer? Also, does sound-juicer work in Mandriva 2010? It's giving me a segfault eror. Thank you.
  9. YES! That was it. I had to use urpme <NAME_OF_THE_PROGRAM> to uninstall it since RPMdrake can't do it. Thank you.
  10. Hi everybody. I need your help: I normally overwrite programs instead of removing the old version first and then installing the latest one again. I do this with VirtualBox's RPM and I've never had problems. But it's a litle different with Adobe Reader: I have noticed that the latest version did not delete the previous one, instead it installed itself in its own directory and left Adobe Reader 8 alone. The problem is that Adobe Reader 8 now has - (an orange minus symbol) icon in MCC and I can't remove it. Any ideas?
  11. Sorry for the late reply, If anybody is still interested: I have everything you mentioned, still nothing seems to work. Kaudiocreator always looks for a .wav file in the CD. I think that is the problem.
  12. In KDE some menus lose their content if you edit them. I have found that in GNOME you can do whatever you want provided you don't delete the existing categories. Also, you shouldn't remove items from GNOME, because they will be lost in KDE's menu. Guess I'll have to create a user for each desktop environment if I want to keep things organized in each menu. Also, for some reason I see that items that disapear on their own are still present, it's just that they don't appear in the menu. If you write the missing program's name in the Kmenu or in the windows that comes out when you press alt+f2, you will see it there. I didn't know that, so I went and re-created the submenus that went blank after meddling with the KDE Menu editor. Now I see two entries for Kalarm, Konsole and other programs. Does anybody know how to remove that duplicate entry?
  13. I move elements from one submenu to another. For example I don't like it that text editors are placed under Tools, so I group them under a submenu I create myself and then I move it to the development menu. After doing that or similar operations some submenus go blank (everything within them disappears) or if I change the name of a submenu that comes with the default configuration, then another submenu with the previous name appears. For example: I change Internet to something else, then another internet menu appears. Also, sometimes a submenu that I made by mistake just won't go away when I delete it.
  14. Nope, I don't see that service in my windows machine. It's in Spanish, by the way, though I don't think the names of services change.
  15. Hello, I am a very organized person, so I don like having a mess of entries in Mandriva's main menu. That is why I always edit it. I categorize everything and move entries and submenus from place t place. Has anyone noticed a problem with Mandriva's menus? I've been having this since mandriva 2008 (or even before, I don't remember). Has anyone noticed that moving entries or changing submenus messes the whole menu? Is there a way to solve this?
  16. Hello Please can somebody help me with this issue? I have three machines runing Windows and Linux, like this: 1 - Windows 7 and Mandriva 2010.0 2 - Windows XP and OpenSuSE 11.2 3 - Windows 7 and Mandriva 2009.1 I have SAMBA installed and set up in all of them so that all three machines can connect to each other no matter the OS the machine is currently running (they all act as servers by the way). Everything is fine except for one thing: te connection from machine 2 to machine 1 is slow. If machine 1 is running Mandriva (it only happens when it's running Mandriva, which means the problema must be in SAMBA) and machine 2 is running XP, and I if try to access machine 1 from machine 2, it does work, but it takes like 50 seconds to load. I mean I double click on the machine 1 icon and it takes a lot of time to load. After this wait, I can access the files and folders in machine one without no delay, BUT if I close the window and wait for several minutes, then the next time I try to access machine 1 I have to wait again. It looks like for some reason there is a timer or something, if I remain inactive for some time, the connection kind of closes and I have to wait again. Tell me if you need my samba configuration file. Than kyou
  17. I have lame from plf liblame0 from plf libmad0 from official The settings are already correct: it says mp3 Lame standard. Now, I noticed something interesting: if you double clic on MP3 Lame standar a small box appears, and it says 'input types wav'. ¿Could this be related? Thanks
  18. Hello, Would you please help me with thi small, yet annoying problem? I installed Koffice from MCC under Mandriva 2010. After that I right click in Dolphin and go to the Create new submenu. It the shows me a list of documents I can create, including those for OpenOffice, HTML, and plain text. However, I see some spreadsheet, presentation and text documents that 1. have no icon, and 2. have no extension (when I click on them a compressed file apperas, but it has no extension). Has somebody else experienced this problem?
  19. Hi guys. I have a problem with Mandriva 2010. I'm trying to rip a CD but: 1. Kaudiocreator says the file or folder /Wav/Track 01.wav can't be found (I'm trying to encode into mp3 not wav) 2. Grip doesn' even start. When run from commandline it says segmentation fault (man, how I hate this error!!!) 3. sound-juicer start and scans the disc but quits unexcpectedly with another segmentation fault once I tell it to start the extraction. Can somebody else rip CD in Mandriva 2010 or is it just my problem? Also, the machine had 2GB RAM, but I recently upgraded to 4GB. Oh, the operating system is 32-bit. Any ideas? [moved from Software by Greg2]
  20. Thank you (and al the other guys) for the solution, this is what I needed.
  21. Thank you for your answer. I understand the vocabulary, but it has risen more questions. I don't know if I can ask more questions inside a thread, but I'll ask anyway: I also need to image my harddrive, which has two partitions: one with windows and another with Linux, what tools do you recommend for this? Regarding the programs, I'll try them once I have an image of my Linux partition to avoid trouble. Thanks.
  22. Hi, I have a question: is there any software for recovering files that got deleted? You know, like file scavenger or those programs for Windows. I need free software, not the propietary programs that appear everywhere if you do a google search. My filesystem is ext3, and I use Mandriva 2010. Thanks
  23. Excellent! You hit the nail on the head. That's exactly what I needed. I love howe Linux can end up looking like a Mac or Windows PC, but neither Windows nor Mac can end up looking like the other :) Thank you
  24. Yes, I think that's it because I have no video card and am working with the integrated video chipset (intel). I do have graphic acceleration for some 3D games and desktop effects, but not all of them. This must be the reason (for example, I have the cube, but the cylinder and sphere do not work). Thanks for your valuable help.
