  1. HI. I recently updated to Mageia 2 kernel-server-3.4.52. This kernel has been working ok for several days. In order to save space I decided to remove most of the older kernels, including the oldest one, the one that comes with Mageia 2. I left two kernels: 3.4.52 and another one (.3.3.8). I restarted and can't boot anymore: the Grub screen shows a black screen with the command used to get to the kernel and the corresponding options. Nothing else. The computer freezes there, doesn't even show a kernel panic message and I have to hit the reset button. I tried using the rescue disk, but it gives me an: Error 12: Error 12: Invalid device requested However I did not change partitions in any way. Also, The physical HDD is ok, because I was able to boot Windows 7 from it (it's a dual boot). Currently I'm trying to boot that kernel from a second HD that has Mandriva 2010 in it. But I don't know what the instruction should be. I have this in MCC/Boot: image /boot/vmlinuz-3.4.52-server-1.mga2 root /dev/sdb5 But it's giving me a "kernel too old" error. Finally, the problem seems to have stemed from removing the default kernel, why could this have happened? Should I reinstall everything or can I just reinstall the old kernel?
  2. Yes, I have done that to replace the mandriva star. However, since this particular icon is the default unknwon filetype icon. This means that if I change it with that approach, all the unknown files will look like sqlite3 files. In Mageia 2 this happens with some filetypes. In OpenSuSe (I also have it) it is happening with all file icons (can't change any), could this be a KDE bug?
  3. Alright. Problem solved. Update two times and nothing happened (other than having to reinstall virtualbox drivers.). Thank you all again.
  4. Hi everybody. I have yet another problem: I'm using KDE and trying to change an icon for sqlite databases. The default icons is the one for unkown files, I found a nice icon and am trying to use it for that file type, but no matter what I do, it never changes. The window that comes up when you right click and select properties in Dolphin does show the new icon, but Dolphin itself keeps showing the usual one (the icon for unknown files). Any idea of why this is happening?
  5. Allright. Sorry for the delay but had to work over one month in Windows so didn't have time to try this. I'll update, cross my fingers and let you know what happens (yikes).
  6. Hi people. I have a question: I am using Mageia 2.0 and am very happy with it. However, I see a new kernel update: kernel-server-3.4.32-2.mga2 - Linux Kernel for server use with i686 & 64GB RAM kernel-server-latest - Virtual rpm for latest kernel-server kernel-userspace-headers - Linux kernel header files for userspace kmod - Kernel modules management tools But I am extremely afraid of installing it because I don't want to screw up the system. Especially since I saw a warning somewhere on this forum stating that there were problems with updates. Also, I'd like to know if updating the kernel will still allow me to use the previous kernel. Finally, I would also like to know why I ended up with a server kernel after installation. Thank you
  7. Hi guys. Sorry I updated to Mageia and totally forgot about this problem. I was unable to fix it. The only option was to download version 17 from here https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/ Looks like it's time to forget about Mandriva 2010 for me. I'm happy with Mageia, but not too happy with the latest Mandriva.
  8. I tried linking the file as you suggested. At first, the library didn't appear (it said not found, like in your example). I used the ln command and now it does appear, but now firefox throws a different error saying that it "can't load XRE extensions". It seems that firefox is definitely dead for mandriva 2010, right???? At the moment I'm using Firefox 17. This one does work. I guess I'll have to update the entire distro simply because of a browser... :(
  9. Sorry. I forgot to add the error description... This is the error: XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /home/frank/firefox/libxpcom.so: libxul.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Couldn't load XPCOM. The many solutions I have found involve updating the distro's xulrunner packages. But I am not using Mandriva's Firefox but the official compressed file you download from the Mozilla.
  10. Hello people. I have a problem with mandriva 2010 and the latest Firefox. I am having the infamous can't start xpcom error described here: I have googled for many solutions, but none has worked. The only thing I could do was downgrade to firefox 17 and it works perfectly. Has anyone encountered this problem? Does this mean that my version of xulrunner must be updated? Won't it break the system? Where do I update it? Should I give up on updating firefox? I thought it was self-contained and depended on no external libraries (I use the firefox you download from Mozilla, not Mandriva's. It is still installed but I don't use it).
  11. Hello people. I have the chromium browser on Mandriva, but it's version 11.x. I need to update because, for some reason, a vital extension stopped working (speeddial) and I can't install it online with this older version. Also, for some reason the downloaded crx file is not working, so I need to update it. Does anyone know a repository for Mandriva 2010 where I can find it?
  12. Do you know of any specific models that work for Mandriva 2010? The store is offering: * Nvidia GeForce 210 *Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 Would they work?
  13. Hello, I am planning on buying a new video card, but I need recommendations because, last time I bought and used one under Linux was 2004. I remember only Nvidia cards worked back then, and it was hell compiling the kernel with the appropriate nvidia drivers. I'm running Mandriva 2010 and SuSe 11.4, any recommendations? I like Nvidia, by the way.
  14. Yep, definitively, it's just that they look a little intimidating without a GUI, but it's OK.
  15. EXCELENT Ian!!! You really saved my behind this time. Testdisk worked like a charm! I recovered all the files except for an icon for my program. But that's OK, I saved everything thanks to you!!! You were right: testdisk does recover the folder structure. Photorec comes with testdisk and they are not very difficult to use, although the lack of GUI is daunting at first. Thank you very much for your help, you saved me years of software development.
  16. Hi Ian. You're great. Always saving my behind! It is working. I have managed to recover a few things. Question1: can testdisk recover folders? Question2: can I have photorec or testdisk recover the files with their former names? I'm getting an incredible amount of very old files and their names are too cryptic. Question3: if not, can I have any of htose two recover only the files modified in the last 24 hours?
  17. Hello everybody. I really need your help this time: I accidentally cast rm -rf in my home directory. Luckily, I managed to stop it quickly. The problem is that I lost three important things: 1 - My .thunderbird folder. I REALLY NEED THIS BACK. 2 - My developed software. I REALLY NEED THIS. I do have a backup of this one, but it's a few days ol and I don't wanna code all that again. Can you help me with this please? I'm running Mandriva 2010 and I have tried scalpel, ddrescue, photorec, and magicrescue. Only photorec has yielded results. PLease, can you give me a hand. Data deleted via rm -rf doesn't go to a recycle bin or something?
  18. Allright, I changed it. Thank, thank you you very much. You're awesome =)
  19. Thanks for replying. I have something like this: # generated by drakhosts 127.0.0.1 MYHOST.localdomain MYHOST localhost should I change it? What about that drakhosts thing?
  20. Hello. I once changed the name of the host from localhost to another thing. After that I started getting this error at the startup screen (you know the one that appears when you press scape when the system is boting): msec: enabling msec security policy traceback Failed to listen on localhost: failed to look up 'localhost' name or service not known /bon/bash/ line 1 2437 aborted Any ideas? This is not affecting anything I can see. But I still feel uneasy to see those red failed mesages at startup.

    About Linux firewalls

I'm sorry for the incredibly late reply. I "lost" the Linux machine I wanted to try this on, but here I am again. Firewall3d, thank you for your suggestion too. I'll see which of these suits me better. Thank you everybody Update: I'm getting this error when I try to launc lpdflower via terminal: Traceback (most recent call last): File "<string>", line 14, in <module> File "/home/wwwwww/Downloads/pyinstaller-1.5.1/iu.py", line 436, in importHook File "/home/wwwwww/Downloads/pyinstaller-1.5.1/iu.py", line 495, in doimport File "/home/wwwwww/Downloads/pyinstaller-1.5.1/iu.py", line 297, in getmod File "/home/wwwwww/Downloads/pyinstaller-1.5.1/archive.py", line 468, in getmod File "/home/wwwwww/Downloads/pyinstaller-1.5.1/iu.py", line 109, in getmod ImportError: /home/an/tmp/_MEIwNZ6QB/libstdc++.so.6: undefined symbol: _ZNSt7num_getIcSt19istreambuf_iteratorIcSt11char_traitsIcEEE2idE, version GLIBCXX_3.4 Any Ideas?

    About Linux firewalls

Well, I have found two interesting things. But I do require your help because both apparent solutions are beyond my abilities: 1 - http://tuxguardian.sourceforge.net/index.php 2 - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1188099 Solution 1 seems to be an easy-to-use program, but I didn't find it for Mandriva 2010, and I'm not sure if I can get the dependencies to install it by compiling since I use KDE4 and it requires QT3. Solution 2 is nice, it's not exactly what I expect (that would be solution 1), but I could make do with it if I just understood what it's about. Can somebody help me?

    About Linux firewalls

No, No. I need something that behaves like Zone Alarm on Windows. That is to say I need a tool for preventing certain programs from accessing the internet and the network.
  24. Hello everybody. I am currently looking for a Linux firewall that behaves just like Zone Alarm for Windows. I know about firestarter and mandriva's own interactive firewall, but what I need is something that immediately warns me of a program trying to connect to the internet so I can block it, for example. Do you know of any way to achieve this with Linux? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  25. No, it was for 2010.1. And yes compiling seems to be the only way. Oh.. well, too bad.
