  1. I'm getting the same problem - but the solutions offered above do not work for me. I can use Mandriva's own DM login screen but it's pretty ugly and I'd like ot be abe to use the KDM login screen. I rename /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc file to get the KDM log in. In this I can neither log in as root nor user, and cannot login to any DE (KDE, Gnome, IceWM or failsafe). I've tried searching the web for ideas - e.g. renamed my home/user/.kde directory with no success. Don
  2. Many thanks. This solved the problem. I installed 2005 over 10.1 but as a fresh install. I'musing the SuSE grub boot loader (also have SuSE 9.1 on the computer) and had simply kept the Mandrake parameters in Grub that I had been using for 10.1. Now I just have to work out how to get the KDM log in screen to work properly - but I'll start a new thread for that. Don
  3. I'm running Mandriva Limited Edition 2005. I had a problem with not being able to log in as user (but could as root). I found a way to to put this right - by giving user read and write permissions for the file /dev/null. My problem now is that when I log off and reboot my computer the permissions have gone back to their default and user cannot login. So every time I have to log in as root, change the permissions and then log in a new session as user. How can I change the permissions permanently so they stay as user read and write for /dev/null? Don
  4. I'm not sure about selinux. My kernel is 2.6.11-6. I've got Suse 9.2 on hda3 - reiserfs, and Mandriva on hda5 - ext3. My old Mandrake (10.1) had no problem. (I did a clean install of Mandriva on hda5) Don
  5. I've renamed the kdmrc file - now I get the KDM reappearing - seem to have the same problem as in derekf's post here but the soltuion in that thread (deleting Xord.0.log) does not work. Also cannot login as root either now. Don
  6. I'm not sure what might be relevant - this is at the end of my /var/log/messages file. I have no xsession-errors file. 7. I keep separate home directories for each distro, and I've tried creating a new user as root but still get the same problem. I can only guess that system is searching trying to do something and not achieving it, but it could be I don't know. Don
  8. I have just installed Mandriva Limited Edition2005 on my laptop (emachines M5116). I already have XP and Suse (hda1 = XP, hda3 = Suse, hda5 = Mandriva, hda6 = swap, hda7 = data). I can boot up and login to Mandriva fine as root, and connect to the internet with no problem (Speedtouch USB modem). On booting, I get the display manager with welcome to local host, username and password and I can put myself in as root with my root password. This takes me no delay to the splashscreen and kde loads as normal. When I do this with my user name and user password I get my splashscreen background and the eggtimer doing somersaults on the screen but nothing else. It stays that way, and does not come up with the splash screen and proceed to load up kde (or any other window manager). I've tried checking everything I can think of but cannot find anything to tell why I can't get logged on as user. Any ideas? Don

Thanks bvc, that's useful. Problem solved. I'd not used menudrake before. Many thanks, Donald

Sorry folks - I should have said - I use KDE. Still no joy. Your idea won't work for me Anna (but glad I helped you find something new!). Is there a KDE equivalent of magicdev? Donald

    Totem

Hello, I'm using mandrake 10 on a laptop - emachines M5116. For playing DVDs, when I insert the DVD in the combo drive, Totem automatically starts and tries ot read the DVD. I prefer to use Xine directly. I know the answer is probably very simple but I can't find it - how do I stop Totem from automatically starting when a DVD is inserted inthe drive? Donald
  12. I am running Mandrake 10 on my emachines M5116 laptop. It has a Slimtype Combo LSC-24082K DVD/CD-rewriter, Intel 855GM (i810) videocard and 82801 DB AC'97 ICH4 845G/GL soundcard. I have a problem with playing DVDs. I use Xine 0.9.23 and have Totem 0.99.9 as well as Kaffeine 0.4 also. When I put a DVD in the drive it will automatically start Totem. This will crash instantly. Calling up Xine on screen and trying to play the DVD will result in sound but no picture. If I place Xine on screen and leave it there without trying to play the DVD on it and the try to play the DVD using Totem or Kaffeine, or even with another Xine on screen it works perfectly! The output from playing Xine in Konsole comes up with one obvious error - "unable to find map file ~/.dvdnav/DVDVolume.map". I have all the required things like libdvdcss and liddvdread. Any ideas what is going wrong? Donald
