here is what I have as root: mcc: command not found Also, I have all the mirrors configured and I can't find mcc on them! Does it have a specific name other than mcc-xxx.rpm? or is it part of drakxtools?

Hi guys, I have just installed Mandriva 2006 Free Edition from the Mini Cd and I don't have mcc installed!! Even worse, I can't find it! Mayve it has been renamed or has a name I am not expecting but i do not know right now. Could anyone help. Thanks.

I have solved the issue (at least partially). The directory was not writable to all users whatever was written in fstab, so i had to change the permissions manually. But my USB-harddrive is self-powered (I have no problems whatsoever with my externally powered USB harddrive) and that might be the problem (it uses two USB ports, one for connection, one for alimentation. Any thoughts? BTW, I am working on a laptop.

I think I have a problem with the version of HAL I have installed, since this is the first time it has happened to me with Mandriva 2005LE Here is the message I get if i try to fstab-sync: libhal.c 644 : Error connecting to system bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_dbus_socket: No such file or directory Segmentation fault Hmm, not good hey? :D

Hi, does anyone know how to share folders that are not in the home directory as a regular user in samba (or do you have to be root?), because i find this rather limiting. Thanks.

Hi everybody, I have installed a fresh Mandriva 2005LE and I have a bit of a problem with my external USB harddrive. If i am not logged in as root, i can not write anything to it. I have tried it with firefox, openoffice2.0 and konqueror, and only firefox still doesn't want to write to my USB disk when root. I have tried to write to my other FAT partitions as a regular user, and it works. I have a correct setup in MCC and fstab i believe, so i don't know what is going on. I have provided screenshots of the problem. Thanks for your help.

I changed the settings in the "xine engines parameters ..." audio tab and everything seem to be fine now for kaffeine, I have given up on totem since kaffeine is much more versatile.

Thanks Phantom! That might just be it! I also have eth0 and wlan0. Although i do not start them at boot, wlan0 (at least, as indicated by the little blue light) is started once boot is complete. I'll shutdown eth0 and tell you about it. Cheers.

I have tried to log out and log in again, but it did not seem to work, at least not fully since i ended up with about 250MB of RAM occupied. Anyway, xfce seems to work really well, plus i really like some of the panel plugins you can put (like the system and memory monitors for instance and the mini CLI). Thanks for your thoughts John.

HI all, Yesterday i was trying to watch a DVD wih kaffeine under XFCE 4.2 with ALSA (or OSS?) activated and after kaffeine produced the first sounds (from the first chapter of the DVD), it exited coming to the root menu saying that another application was using the sound system. I had the same problem with totem but then i was able to continue. The DVD I was watching was "The Fellowship of the ring", the special edition. I should also probably add that the DVD is zone 2 and that my laptop has a zone 1 drive. But i tried it under windows with VideoLAN and everything worked perfectly. When i tried it with artsd running, i did not have this problem. Also,using ogle from the command line (I have problem with the gui) i do not have this problem either. Any thoughts?

Hi everybody, I have recently installed Mandriva LE2005, and although i have found it to be much better than 10.1 in many respects, I have one little annoying problem. When I open KDE, the memory used is typicallly 160-180MB (which is fine by me), but after opening a few applications (like kaffeine, openoffice, mplayer, firefox, mozilla, etc...), I find myself with 440MB (which is the maximum on my sytem, a laptop) of memory used after having closed ALL of the above. I do believe that KDE keeps at least one instance of each applicatioon in memory, but even checking that and kill all such processes only gets me down to about 330MB. Now, I have checked in the "KDE control center", in the KDE performance tab that I disabled the "preloading" of apps by setting its value to "0", but still the same problem. I do not have this problem with xfce 4.2, although if i open a KDE application like kaffeine, it stays in memory even after closing it completly!! Now, correct me if i'm wrong, but an app should vanish from RAM as soon as (or at least in a reasonable amount of time after) it is closed. I would not worry too much about it if it did not end up slowing down my system dramatically after 30-45 minutes of use! Cheers. BTW, XFCE rocks!!

This didn't seem to work for me, so I have written a little script (in two parts) that takes care of the business and I have deactivated wlan0 on boot, which leads to much shorter boot times. Everything is working fine this way. I will post the scripts latter. Thanks for the help guys.

Hi everybody, I have an HP Zv5000 series laptop with a Broadcom wireless card. Everything works fine, wlan0 is found at boot and started up, BUT, it can not determine the IP address from the router. I have traced the problem to the type of key. Mandrake blindly sets the key to "restricted" when I need "open". Once I set it to open (once the system is booted up), I can then run "dhclient wlan0" and everything works great. NOTE: When the type of key is wrong, the essid is not set correctly, but when the type of key is ok, then the essid is fine. My question is, is there a way to have that done automatically (wlan0 loses the "open" status after each reboot") that would not involve having to write a script (which i know how to do) and setting sudo permissions for iwconfig and dhclient? And if that is the only way (or the easier way), how do i get my script to be run at boot time? Cheers.

Cool! I would guess that since it is based on the 2.4 kernel and i did not include ndiswrapper since i had no need for it in the past. Give me a list of things you think need improvement and i will take that into account in the next version. Right now, I was thinking to go for that 2.6 kernel (same as PCLinuxOS) and change the real player installer and also get the latest versions of each software, I also have to take care o the website. I do not have a lot of web space, so the only way that I would see would be that I partition the iso with something like winzip in chunks of about 100MB and you recompose the iso when you have all the parts. That would be the easiest way. I will post the address shortly. Just tell me when you are done with downloading one part of the iso and I will put the next part online. How's that? Hi everybody, I have started this project out of curiosity about 9 months ago and i have reached a point where I would like some feedback from the community to help me improve the CD. I have enclosed a file with a brief description of the liveCD and the software included. I know, the name is kinda lame and frankly ... sucks, but i have struggled to find a better name, but the essential thing is that i have tried to customise Mandrake 10.0 (although i should say Mandriva now) to fit my needs. What the sheet doesn't tell you is that I used a 2.4 kernel (see my thread "Comparison CDROM/HDD" in this forum). If anyone is interested in testing it, I could find a way to make the isos available. Hi all, I recently bought a new HP Pavillion dv5000 laptop which comes with a Broadcom BCM94306 wireless adapter and i have trouble configuring all the options in the MCC. I enter my network name and key, but the other parameters are criptic and i am a bit lost. I am using a router, but when connected to it via ethernet, everything works just fine. I was wondering if there is a better method than the mcc to set up your wireless (I am not afraid of the command line). Also, eventhough I told mandrake (10.2 Beta2) to start the WLAN card at boot, it does not seem to do it (I have also named ndiswrapper -needed for my card- to be loaded at boottime in /etc/modules). Ndiswrapper is installed and working, both eth0 and the WLAN are activated. Do I have to remove eth0 if i want to use the wlan? Thanks.

Steve, I am in the process of writing an article about my livecd that will include why I chose Mandrake, why I chose the packages I have included and also how I went about it. I will also talk about the different steps involved in creating a livecd. My laptop crashed (sad, but at least it gave me a good excuse to buy a new one :D ) and I don't know if I had the file on the hard drive or not. If that was the case, I might well start a new article. Anyway, bottom line is, it will take time. It is highly unlikely that it will be finished before may or even june, but it will be done. Cheers. Hi everybody, I have put together a livecd for chemsitry and I have timed different programs. As expected the livecd is much slower running from the cdrom, but as usual, it depends. On a PIV 3.2GHz, 512MB, 52xCDROM, the livecd is most of the time faster than from the harddrive on a PIII 850MHz, 128MB, 24xCDROM. Anyway, more in the pdf file. Cheers. Hi all, I have been using Mandrake 10.2 Beta2 for just over an hour but i am already quite pleased with the changes made. 10.1 did notwork for me, but 10.2 works a charm, albeit a bit slow (but i only have 128MB of PC100 RAM on a laptop). Anyway, I was wondering if any of you tried it yet and i just wanted to start a thread that would compile the thoughts we all have on it. Cheers.
