I think for orig. poster and mr. zeppelin, a key thing to know about bittorrent is it has no builtin search utility. I think that's what SoulSe was hinting at. You have to find the torrent files yourself on the web - not so easy now the MPAA is opening cans of whup-ass all over.
  2. Hi, I can't be sure if this is Gnome-compatible (KDE all the way for me) but have you tried LinNeighborhood? Don't use it much since I've got Konqueror for easy SMB browsing, but seems quite easy to use and doesn't ask for nonexistent passwords.
  3. That depends on the card. If it's also Belkin 54G range, chances are it'll work without going through that process (my PCMCIA did). For starters, check you have ndiswrapper installed, then visit their website ndiswrapper.sf.net and follow the HOWTO.
  4. I have the same problem. Would you settle for Hibernate? That seems to work okay on 10.1 with 2.6 kernel - though admittedly it's not much quicker than just shutting down...
  5. Amen to that - you can count my GF among them
  6. Valid point, but would you in good conscience sell a n00b a box preinstalled with ANY current distro and not expect them back two days later wailing "NOTHING WORKS!" ? Windoze can drive experienced (read:weary) people into the arms of Linux, but it coddles n00bs in a way Linux can't match right now. Linux to the demanding beginner with no real desire to learn high-level computing theory just to get their modem working, can just as easily drive them into the arms of Windows. (Or Macs if they've gained anything from the experience, though that would mean a hardware change..) Sorry this is probably veering OT.
  7. Hi there, You suggest that you're experienced in sharing TBird mail folders between OSes, so what's different this time? After setting up the account, have you moved the <profile-folder>/Mail/<yahoo-account> folder to your shared partition? Then edited <profile-folder>/prefs.js to alter the paths appropriately? IIRC that is all that's needed (and do the same thing in Windows of course), so is it a case that you're unable to perform one of these steps? If I've misinterpreted something with your post, or you need more detail on the above, just let me know.
  8. You have, with this knowledgeable and detailed post, practically assassinated your own argument. Knowing as much as you do, I'm willing to bet that any Windows boxes in your care are seldom troubled by cracking/virii. I'm now wondering whether the question should be 'who should own which computers?' To which my considered response would be: - For your first computer, while Ma & Pa are still doting on you with lots of cash, get a Mac and (allegedly) never worry much about security. - When you've gotten your head round the Mac, got bored one day and started poking under the hood and want more, get a Linux box. - Forty years later, when you're a Linux guru with a full understanding of OS and networking security, do something really brave and get Windows. Guidance Counsellor Banana has spoken
  9. I'm with Sean on this one. I think we are seeing computers of all breeds getting closer to being secure and idiot-proof out of the box, but that responsibility needs to be taken more seriously by not just the OS vendors but the stores and manufacturers too. Remind me, when exactly did XP SP1 come out? Quite a while before I got my laptop, I'm pretty certain. But when I fired it up, it was in vanilla SP1 condition - cue about 100MB worth of Win updates. At least now, with boxes shipping with SP2 installed, there's _slightly_ less risk of being 0wn3d in minutes, but hey, another week, another vulnerability... Is it too much to ask for the shop to keep their systems bang up to date? Right now I doubt if the PFY who serves me at PC World even comprehends how frequently Win updates come out. They seem to love assessing the punter's personal knowledge to work out how bad they can fleece them, why not temper that with enough compassion to hand out a couple of basic safety tips if thought necessary? That, plus a mere paragraph about common-sense good practice in the Quickstart guide, would stop a lot of folks becoming botnet bitches and a pain in my royal ass. The shops would surely benefit here too, as they wouldn't have Joe Blow back in their face two days later wailing 'It broke itself!!' We already can be really elitist with ol' Joe just thanks to our immense knowledge, but let's not make the elite a gated community!
  10. To paraphrase the poll text, "root has to have root, otherwise root is not root." The root vs. non-root thing was one of the most baffling thing about *nix for me as a new user (including all the chowning and chmodding that goes with it). I'm sure a lot of n00bs agree. But equally it has probably had a good knock-on effect for a lot of Wintel users once they've mastered it. Those still running a Winbox for old times' sake, can go back to it and think: "My God! I've been doing everything as root!" Soon they'll stop being Administrator all day and set up home in a weedy Guest account. (Right?) It would help a lot if more was made of SUDO though. "Run as..." is a very simple thing to start using habitually in XP, you really can't say that about sudo. I still don't know how to use it properly. If I had enough disk, or could stand to be parted from Mandrake for any length of time, I'd go with Ubuntu for a while and see if I got the hang of it. Sudo doesn't even seem to have the ability to drop straight back to normal user after running the specified task - only after a specified time interval. Serious - make sudo more usable, and I don't think this debate would even be occurring. PS - sorry if my general lack of knowledge has made me talk horse-jobbies in any of the above. I couldn't claim to know sudo well enough to know when I'm wrong.
  11. Thanks, I'll have a look at that when my comp comes back from the doctor :(
  12. 'ning So, I'm continuing to build my wifi world. Next step is easy hookup between my laptop and other PCs I meet on the road. A USB adapter seems the best way to go, since every PC I meet is likely to have one(?) My current PCMCIA card is a Belkin F5D7010, 54g that works pretty well with Linux 2.6 and ndiswrapper 0.8 or better. They have a nice compact USB equivalent, but it's not been much use trying to get Linux compatibility info out of the resellers or Belkin themselves. Quelle surprise..! So, I'd love to hear any recommendations/success stories for UK-available 54G 'dongles' known to work well with Linux (esp. Mandy, natch) with a minimum of configgery. Do they use ndiswrapper too? Are the supplied drivers good, or do I need to hunt down others? Your help much appreciated. I lucked out with the PCMCIA card, but I'd prefer to make an informed decision this time.
  13. 'ning After all the fun of getting ndiswrapper working with my wifi card, I've now found a bit of an issue I'd like to iron out if possible. The current setting in ifcfg-wlan0 is ONBOOT=yes as I'm usually at home with the card inserted when I boot. However, this might not be the case, or if I'm at a public hotspot I might need to use an alternate config. If I boot without the card in, it won't come up later - the interface will, but it seems to ignore the config (possibly because of the ONBOOT line...?) so I can't connect to my own AP. Even after removing and re-modprobing ndiswrapper, still no connection. So ... is there any way round this, i.e. preventing the attempt to bring up wlan0 during boot if the card is not present? Sorry if this seems more of a Hardware post, but I figure the actual solution (if there is one) would be a down-n-dirty programming type one.
  14. Heh, excellent - I didn't know they did that. Hope somebody torrents it though. ...if they haven't already!
  15. There is a driver from Dell listed in the ndiswrapper Wiki for this card. http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R76521na.EXE This is a self-extracting archive + installer. Unpack in Windows (I guess maybe you could open it with Ark or something in Linux but haven't tried), then cancel the installer. I'm currently using the driver from the 'IR' folder (bcmwl5a.inf) with Knoppix, because the one from the Belkin CD doesn't seem to work with that distro. Hope this helps some. You should check the Wiki for other alternative drivers if this one doesn't work, link here: http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/phpwiki/index.php/List?
  16. Well... hell, that's more like it. Did a full remove and switched to the Goettingen repos - now I've got 100 packages (~480MB) to DL. See you in the spring...!
  17. Not much output there either. [root@localhost robin]# urpmi -v --update --media updates examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.updates.cz]
  18. Yep, that's always the way I check for new updates - though I did try it through the GUI as well and it was the same. Just out of interest, what source are you using? I swapped between ftp.esat.net and sunsite.co.uk (have done this a few times)
  19. 'ning all I've not had any updates since just after Christmas, which seems very odd. I've tried all the tips I could find on the board: 1) rpm --rebuilddb 2) urpmi.update -a -f 3) change FTP sources and update Point 3) got me one update - for kwifimanager - but that still seems a bit low for over a fortnight. Any ideas what else could be wrong, or is Mandy just really being this quiet lately?
  20. 'ning and welcome I have a A30 - not sure how close the spec is but will help if I can. Haven't tried the winmodem myself but I recall there is quite a long page about them on tldp.org you might want to check out. ACPI - was absolute hell on 10.0 but seems a _bit_ more stable on 10.1 with 2.6 kernel. I never could make my lid button do a hibernate though - it just does a normal logout and shutdown when I press it, no matter what setting I enter in Klaptop (I only use KDE, how about you?). Recommend sticking with Hibernate from the Klaptop tray menu. Wifi card - what model do you have? built-in, or PCMCIA? You might want to check out ndiswrapper.sf.net and see if your card's supported. EDIT: Here's that link about 'lin'modems. It in turn links to a database of supported modems, though that site seems to be down at the moment... http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Linmodem-HOWTO.html
  21. Okay, you can scrap Q1 [i'm just relating this for posterity of course] I went ahead with the home-directory script, and was able to save an .IMG of my /home onto the Windows partition. So, just for once, let's hear it for FAT32-based Win32! I then copied this image onto the pen drive, rebooted into Knoppix with linux26 home=/mnt/uba1 and game on! Note this doesn't make the rest of the pen writeable, but the image (whose size I set to 30MB) is. ndiswrapper is still a problem though. I tried doing the whole setup through shell, but still ended in a panic..
  22. 'Ning Never thought I'd be posting about another distro after only being with Mandy a few months, but hey. Got a nifty 64MB pen-drive for Chrimbo, and currently my own laptop is having battery probs so I was left with my GF's WinME (please god deliver me) laptop. So in a flash (and I do mean that - just a couple hours on Bittorrent ) I'd acquired Knoppix 3.7 to while away the rest of my Sunday. After a few boots and generally loving what I saw, I came to the nitty-gritty issues: storage and internet access. This has not gone so well. The pen-drive mounts okay (provided it's inserted at boot), but when I tried to run through the 'Create persistent home directory' script, the only option the GUI would give me was the HD. I read the bit about specifying the home mount-point at boot, and (though I wasn't convinced this alone would do the trick) set out to try making a KNOPPIX folder on the pen. This didn't work in GUI or shell, because it was mounted as read-only. And modifying /etc/fstab isn't gonna be very persistent, I guess...! So, question 1: how can I make it so I can mount the pen r/w at boot, or in a very simple manner thereafter? So far I haven't figured out how to mount it if I insert it after boot, so I'm not at all sure where to start. Internet - the GF is using a Belkin wifi card, same model as I use effortlessly with MDK10.1 and ndiswrapper 0.8 or whatever is preinstalled with Mandy. (I haven't needed to do all the tortuous old-version removal with 10.1 that I did with 10.0) I've not yet ascertained what version Knoppix is using, but old MDK10.0 problems are coming back to haunt me, namely a total freeze. With 10.0 I'd gotten round this by loading the driver (modprobe ndiswrapper) before inserting the card, but when I use the script provided in Knoppix, then insert the card, it still freezes. Question 2: what (besides the drivers) can I pack onto the pen, to help ndiswrapper load-up without issue? I'd like to be able to store a couple of alternate ifcfg-wlan0 files on there too if possible (just home, work, pub - Edinburgh's not a big place for wifi). I know this is a big and rambling issue, but even if you can take a swipe at one of the above issues, I'd welcome the advice. I love the ease of 'infecting' unsuspecting Winboxes with Linux (MUA-HA-HA) and would like to make a go of this, but Q1 is an absolute must. Q2 is really to keep me sane while I wait to get back to good ol' Mandy. G'night then. Hope you come up with some peals of wisdom!
  23. I'm not sure how safe this is, but the basic would be chown root:group1 /mnt/win_c (give ownership to group1) chmod g+r /mnt/win_c (allow group1 to read)
  24. I never put any hyphens in my key and it works okay. I don't know if this affects things for different hardware(?)
  25. Have you tried putting the necessary configs in a file instead? For this interface it would reside at /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 (if it's not there you can create it) Contents should be something like this: DEVICE=wlan0 BOOTPROTO=dhcp HWADDR=<your wifi card's MAC address> ONBOOT=<yes/no, up to you> WIRELESS_ESSID=WGENLAN WIRELESS_MODE=Managed WIRELESS_ENC_KEY=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX <I don't use quotes for mine> MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes WIRELESS_HOSTNAME=jdavislaptop.wgenhq.net NEEDHOSTNAME=yes There might be something missing, but I'm not on my Linux right now. Will check later...
