  1. If you are able to transmit but not receive, there's probably something about your wireless card's config that the router doesn't like. The only thing that jumps out at me is that the security mode is wrong; if you are using an encryption key, the mode should be 'restricted'. If you are entering the config manually instead of using an ifcfg-wlan0 file, try changing the directive 'key XXXX-XXXX-XX' to 'key restricted XXXX-XXXX-XX'. If that still gets you the same results, you could try (briefly) disabling encryption in your router and see if you can connect without it. Just to possibly narrow-down the problem. BTW, when you say you've followed the instructions, did you check the Wiki page for Mandrake and follow the stuff about removing the old, preinstalled version of ndiswrapper? This can be critical depending on what card you have. Also, what make and model is your router?
  2. So I could move /boot back into my main Linux partition at the end of the drive and scrap its old partition? Like kewl, dude! ...um, anyone know how to do that?
  3. Do you mean this forum or that one? (Either way, I agree!) Well, potentially there is a list of folks (see above) who might want a pop at them. I hesitate to say "they're going down" as things don't always work out that way, but it looks likely... Anyhoo, the app. itself is an embarrassment. If they have ripped off PearPC, it seems they ripped off a rather early vintage and built a crappy VB shell around it. Any user of a month's experience with PearPC, who builds from CVS or gets nightly builds and refines their configs a bit, can expect better performance than with - I love saying this - CherryB$.
  4. My understanding of the partition issue is that Windows' boot code (the file 'ntldr') must come less than 8GB from the start of the drive. As for Linux 'not caring', I _thought_ it was a hardware, not OS issue. The instructions I used for setting up dual-boot told me to create a small Linux partition just after the MBR, and install the Linux boot code (/boot/vmlinuz) there, so as to solve the 'boot code boundary' issue. Admittedly, maybe this was bum/outdated info I found. Confirmation anyone?
  5. Yep, that joke has been cracked a few times down at the pearpc.net forum. They have the authoritative thread on this (65 pages!): http://forums.h80571.serverkompetenz.net/v...opic.php?t=1237 [normal DNS server is screwed ATM, hence the funny address] As you'd expect, they have been sinking cattle-prods into CherryOS' credibility since it was first 'promo'd' (but not released) back in autumn. Now it's getting really good for the popcorn-munchers; here's the full rap sheet: 1) They stole GPL code from PearPC for the emulation; 2) They stole experimental freeware code from HFV Explorer for the Shared Disk feature. 3) They stole GPL code from OpenVPN for the networking ability; 4) They packaged it with an unlicensed copy of Indigo Rose Setup Factory; 5) They built it with an unlicensed copy of Visual Basic; 6) And of course they promote violation of the Apple EULA (but let's skim over that since it could scr3w PearPC as well) Now I can't substantiate any of these allegations (though from what I've seen, at least 1 and 3 are pretty irrefutable). This app. has already triumphed at the Wired News Vaporware Awards 2004; could it now take the crown for the greatest number of IP crimes incorporated in one piece of software?
  6. Hey, if there is a way to do this I'd like to know too. I don't get any option to change the refresh in MDK or Windows on my Toshiba. (Didn't realise LCDs had the same flicker problem as CRTs, I must admit.)
  7. Ah, I pay them extra for the privilege of no bandwidth-cap. If they start to quibble about abusing 'unlimited' usage, I'll listen, but I don't think it's gonna happen anyway. So far I'm only really using BT when a new Mandrake or Knoppiix distro comes along, though I could be using it more if I knew some good sites. I came across legaltorrents.com but there ain't really much there.
  8. <BUMP> I had a kinda 'enforced' holiday from this Q, since mucking about with ACPI ended with me reinstalling everything, then laptop got ill again and had to go to doctor. Since I started this thread, I've moved up from 10.0 to 10.1OE, and on install I was prompted during XOrg setup to configure 2 'heads' [monitors?]. So I guess Mandy knows the TV-Out is there, but I have no idea how to use it. I configured the 2nd head as 'Plug & Play' as it seemed the safest option. As before, pushing the button does nothing more than making both screens flicker for an instant. I remember Windows behaving like this at one point, but it went away and I never learned the cause. Anyone out there with experience in this area? I still can't find info anywhere about this.
  9. So for each torrent, all the incoming connections (peers -> me) are sharing 1 port, is that correct? I'm confused by the idea of throttling uploads though. I thought the paradigm was, the more uploading you permit, the more you can download.
  10. 'ning all, I must have read a couple dozen FAQs about BT and routers/ports, but there's one thing none seem to explain. Here goes: In my client (ABC) the controls for connections consist of a range of ports to use (6881-6999) and a max number of uploads (5). I've complied with the guides and forwarded ports 6881-6889 to my client PC. But what ports are actually used in which direction? If I understand correctly, peers connect (to download from me) through the forwarded ports. But in that case, which ports am I downloading from? If I have 9 ports open and allow 9 upload connections, does that mean I couldn't download at all? Thanks for any light you can shed on this. The docs I've seen don't give me any clue about how ports are used in BT, so it's over to you guys.
  11. Or, if it is apparently 'connected' correctly, maybe your box is not getting DNS service. Assuming it's the router, not the PC itself, that holds the addresses of DNS servers to use, check these addresses by pinging them: ping -c 4 81.240.24.4 (or whatever is primary DNS address) If you didn't have to manually enter these server addresses when setting up your ISP account, you should be able to view the addresses your account is using by looking at 'WAN settings' or similar category in the router controls.
  12. Also late to the party, but for what it's worth I've always used the tar.gz package to install TBird and never had dependency or other issues. I wouldn't say it's any harder than an RPM install either; you just run ./install-thunderbird.sh (or whatever it was called) and get a graphical installer identical to the Windows version. To the person who asked about upgrading: Can't speak for Linux version, but I've used TBird on Windows since 0.7something, and it has gained a lot of stability since that version so I'd go for it.
  13. Iphitus, you surprise me. Are you saying there is NO threat of virii for a desktop Linux distro?
  14. ianforest, welcome to the board. You are not the first to despair of the wireless scenario, but the ndiswrapper team have gone a tremendous way towards making Windows-based, closed-source hardware work with Linux. I don't know about the Linksys, but the Belkin device is listed as one that does work with ndiswrapper. I actually own one, but haven't had occasion to try it out with Linux. Either head over to http://ndiswrapper.sf.net and locate the 'Installation Wiki' or search this board for 'ndiswrapper, and you'll find PLENTY of info on this subject. Chow down, buddy! (Oh, and do ask if you need jargon-busting on any of it.)
  15. Well, neither 'side' of your computer is immune from problems of this type. Mind you, I've yet to hear of a virus that killed two OSes at the same time! If you NEVER connect to the internet with XP, (and Norton isn't just lying), perhaps malware got into your system by another medium? If you installed any software from a CD, floppy or pen-drive, try scanning that and see if anything pops up. you might want to try out a Linux antivirus, too. I have no links to share, but F-Prot and Panda are two you could search for. Can you tell us what files Norton is flagging, and what virii are identified? Also, how do you connect to the internet? Directly through a modem, or via a local network connection?
  16. I must ask, would this be a good thing for the user base? As a roughly 6-months' user of Linux, just beginning to get comfy with URPMI in both GUI and CLI, the idea of a whole new package-management philosophy terrifies me. If they did such a thing for 10.2, I might well cut my losses and install that SuSE 9.2 DVD that's been tempting me lately. I don't claim to know what would be a _good_ outcome of these two very different distro philosophies coming together, but any sudden major changes to either product would be a BAAD idea (and I don't mean the town in Yemen). Package management (plus what packages are actually available in the repo's) is one of the defining features of any distro, so foisting an alternative default onto the 'faithful' is not to be done lightly. [Thanks Mum, you can put your soap back in this box now.]
  17. I've got a Speedtouch 330 - USB only, and if that's like yours then forget about using it with a router. It needs the USB connection to a host PC to load the firmware at runtime. At work we use a Netgear router that's stayed up for several months without needing a reboot, so I guess I'd call that a good purchase.
  18. Hey, I finally found an easy-peasy way to do this. Actually it's based on phunni's first reply, more or less. 1- Put script somewhere other than Desktop, chmod +x it. 2- Make Application shortcut on Desktop pointing to script. 3- In shortcut Properties, select 'Run in Terminal' and 'run as another user' [root]. 4- And of course choose a funky icon for the shortcut ;)
  19. Well, I went another way and just put ONBOOT=no for all my configs. Then I just use a script to choose which one to copy to ifcfg-wlan0 before inserting the card.
  20. Thanks, I went with the Belkin card in the end as it was in the ndiswrapper list. I hadn't been there in a while I guess, I'm sure they never had any USB cards listed before... I was surprised that the chipset wasn't the usual Broadcom stuff for 54G, and worried that it didn't install very well on XP, but got it going with another PC and Knoppix talking to my laptop. Huzzah!
  21. Hi, re the http://ABC thing, if I understand right you need to actually have a DNS server running on your machine to bind this host-name. Otherwise there's nothing in the HTTP request to say that 'ABC' is on this computer. I don't full well understand that stuff, but the only hostnames I can use on my own machine are 'localhost' and '<my computername>'. BTW you can stop/start Apache from Mandrake Control Centre > System > Services (it's called httpd or httpd2). Or simpler, from a root console you can type service httpd2 [start/stop/restart] When installed it should be configured to run automatically. What PHP modules are you wishing to install - are they not available through your URPMI sources?
  22. >>IRC client Chatzilla! https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extension....0+&os=nt&id=16
  23. ...furthermore, I realised that after a furious evening of URPMI-ing, I had a mis-matched kernel and source - probably doesn't help. I just decided to build v1.0 from source in the end, and now everything's working nicely. Phew! Pass the Scotch.
  24. Ah... I think I get why that didn't happen now. I don't have the symlink to the kernel-source. /slaps self Will go and sort that out, then see if that gets me connected.
  25. Remember kids, don't drink and wifi. I was just getting to the stage of cockiness with my PCMCIA, ndiswrapper et al. Then I had to wipe my laptop and reinstall Mandy 10.1OE - no problem, right? Except for some reason, now ndiswrapper ain't playing ball. The card sees the network (checked 'iwlist wlan0 scanning') but I can't set the ESSID to connect. (This had happened sporadically before, but I thought I had it cracked by going DHCP and ONBOOT.) So I decide to do the whole rigmarole of removing /lib/modules/2.6.8-12/kernel/3rdparty/ndiswrapper ... except I really do RM it, not back it up. Long ago (10.0), I installed ndiswrapper from source, but my card has thus far just worked with 10.1 so I've just been using RPM ndiswrapper 0.9.1. Have I b0rked it? Does the source ndiswrapper actually rebuild this module for me, or do I have to go beggin' for a replacement?
