    ATI cards

I have an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro, and am getting good results just using the supplied DRI drivers in Mdk 10OE. Admittedly, I am not a hard-core gamer, but I am getting great frame rates with fglxgears, and am quite happily running Cedega for my Win games.
  2. Just for the record, I've had better success using Point2Play than with just Cedega (playing Civ3)....
  3. Cedega/WineX is clearly the way to go. My only real "Windows Only" game (Civilization 3) runs with only a few minor problems (e.g., a sound glitch) using it, letting me have my cake and eat it, too! :D As to the "emulator or not" side discussion, I agree with SoulSe: technically, it's not an emulator, but to a non-tech newbie, it does the same thing. Not worth arguing about. ;)
  4. urpmi is the package manager for Mandrake. It can easily be configured to install RPMS from repositories across the web. (That is how most of us here set it up.) Check out the site: www.urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php
  5. Turn-Based Strategy games. The premier of which is Civilization III. Unfortunately, the developer has stated in no uncertain terms that DirectX will be their methodology of choice. So no direct ports, there. :( (Transgaming/WineX, here I come....)
  6. Well, I resolved my problem -- by *removing* the new ati3.7.6 drivers! I finally gave up (for now) and just did a "rpm --erase" on it. Rebooted my machine, and voila! my glxinfo: $ glxinfo name of display: :0.0 display: :0 screen: 0 direct rendering: Yes server glx vendor string: SGI server glx version string: 1.2 server glx extensions: GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context client glx vendor string: SGI client glx version string: 1.2 client glx extensions: GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context, GLX_NV_vertex_array_range, GLX_MESA_agp_offset GLX extensions: GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc. (BTW, I am using an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro.)
  7. Yeah, it's not inutuitively obvious to a Windows user. ;) Once you understand how *nix handles access to partitions, etc., it's not too hard to figure out. Glad you found your way there. :)
  8. Rats! :( (And, yes, I use a HP 2230.)
  9. Meanwhile, I *still* haven't been able to get the driver to work. The RPM seemed to install okay, and I ran fglrxconfig, giving values similar to what I needed for W2K, and when I restart X, it just flashes once for each resolution I specified, then drops me to the console with a message that no screens are available. No sweat, I just log on and replace XF86Config-4 with the original that I stashed away for just such an eventuality. ;) But I would *really* like to get this driver to work. Maybe I need to drop back and run the "./make.sh", etc., and go from there....
  10. AHh, thanks, VeeDubb. 2.6.3-7mdk it is! :)
  11. The other day I was "relaxing" with TuxRacer, and my 6-yr-old grandson came over and said, "Wow! Cool! Make him go faster!" He doesn't care about the OS. He just knows "Point and Click" makes things go. He'll have no trouble using Linux, I'm sure. :)
  12. Glad you're happy! :) Sometimes, even in the non-Windows world, a re-install can fix things up. I know whenever I upgrade my Linux, I format the "/" partition, and install from scratch....
  13. I, too, am running a dual boot Win2K/Mandrake 10-CE system. I have had no problems at all. Can you give us more information to work with? Tell us about your system hardware, in as much detail as possible. Tell us what you are doing when it "locks up". We'd love to help, but we need more information. :)
  14. -- I can sympathize! I posted this thread after spending many hours searching the net for "How-to"s, and experimenting a little with no good results. What's frustrating, to me, is that I have been using UNIX at work, to some degree or another, for over 15 years! I have been dabbling in Linux since Mdk 6.0 (although I didn't "get serious" until 9.1). I was preparing to do some heavy Command-Line-type tweaking as root, in order to get this to work. Linux has, indeed, come a long way! :D One of the things that makes me keep working with Linux is the Community, the way people help each other. I visit many discussion boards/forums, on a variety of subjects, and it is rare indeed to find one where "newbies" aren't flamed immediately on asking a "newbish" question. Needless to say, the "civilized" boards are the ones I return to. This forum is now bookmarked, both at work and at home! :)
  15. OMG! It was that easy! Why didn't I think of that?!? Thanks, nggalai! :D
  16. I'm not sure if this belongs here or in Software, but here goes.... I have a Palm Tungsten-T, that has a USB cradle for recharging and synching. I am running Mdk 10.0 CE (straight from the CDs, no updates (yet)). What do I need to do to get it to synch, using Linux tools, such as KPilot, or JPilot? (I feel like such a noob .... )
  17. I have a similar problem, but for me, Noatun works, so I have just been using that. When I start xmms, everything works fine, until after I select a song to play. When I hit the "Play" button, everything just freezes.
  18. Try turning OFF the microphone in aumix. That cleared up the *feedback* signal I was hearing. I have no mic attached, but was getting this "horn noise" until I did that.
  19. Looks good Sagittarius! I will have to try installing this on my 9.2 system ASAP! :D
  20. Aha-HAH! That did the trick. Disable the on-board sound from the bios, and then mute the mic! I have sound again in Linux! :D
  21. Muting the mic! I never thought of that! I don't have one connected, but I am having the same problems described. I will definitely have to try this when I get home.
