  1. Is it not similar to the Redhat / Fedora example . Fedora is leading edge with a quick update cycle , Redhat is more stable with a much longer shelf life. Mandrake 10 CE ( the CE bit being the clue) is the leading edge product. The Finals will be the more stable editions with a possible longer shelf life. Thus positioning Mandrake better to make inroads into the Enterprise market. Its a business model that has a lot of merits
  2. I have been unable to resole this issue.. It would seem that it is a Kernel issue. after doing all that was suggested the page rendering was still painfully slow. I decided ok , I will blow away MDK 10 and installed Fedora core 1 and no probs. Upgraded the Kernel to 2.6 and the rendering slowed dramatically. I tried the fixes suggested on Fedora as well with out success. Rolled back to Core 1 with Kernel 2.4 .22 and no problems.
  3. I have Mandrake 10 installed and have noticed that internet performance is slow. I have a 2Mbps Cable link . Sites take at least a minute to connect . If I boot to WinXP the speed is almost instant. Any suggestions? I am using a Motorola Surfboard modem connect through a 100 Router to ethernet. It is the same in Mozilla , Konqueror, Epiphany . Cheers
  4. Hey thanks for all your input here aRTee. I never knew that you could recover your previously partition tables!!! You learn something new everyday, just wish I knew that before I re-installed everything. Now, off to find that disk....... B) I must say though, overall I am very impressed with Mandy 10.0 (yes even with this nasty partition table bug). I am certainly not going to let a bug like that drive me away from linux, it would take alot more!!! And to all the guys complaining about this bug, you should remember that this is not the final Mandrake 10.0 version, so you should be expecting some bugs, although I must admit, maybe not quite as nasty as this one. If you want a rock solid, stable and bugless version, wait to the 'Mandrake 10.0 Official' version comes out. Cheers!!! So very true. Best practice , if you are going to dabble with Beta's , BACK UP, and secondly be prepared to get burnt occassionaly. I backed up before trying MDK 10 , and yes it zapped me to , but all I lost was a couple of emails and an a few hours fixing my machine ( but that was fun). And to "aze" you don't need to replace you HDD , Put in your WnXP disk reboot , blow away all the partitions , make one big make you whole HDD a partition , reboot , select recovery , do a fix/mbr and fix/boot , and reinstall . Yes you will lose your data , but mark up to lifes colorful experiences .
  5. Has anyone experienced this WinXP problem upgrading MDK9X to MDK 10 ? I did a clean install of 10 and got zapped , I was going to try an upgrade but dont want to self destruct
  6. The problem of Win XP not booting seems quite common various forums have mentioned it. I decided to give Mandrake 10 Community a try , $12 seemed a inexpensive play time . The system I used had a dual boot Win XP / Mandrake 9.2 setup. That had been working great . I blew away the MDK 9.2 install and installed MDK 10. The first CD would not boot but I managed to get CD 2 to boot and simply swapped . The rest of the install went sweet . MDK 10 fired up detected all my hardware , network and connecting to the net a breeze. I then had to boot to WinXP and thats where the probs started . WinXP would not boot , all I got was a cursor flashing in the corner . OK I thought a will repair the MBR through the recovery console , would not work . Decided to blow away MDK 10 , still no boot from WinXP . Tried a further restore with out success . Decided since I had just done a full back up I would blow away XP and start a fresh. The Win XP CD would boot , load initial set up allow the the partitions to be formatted but would fail to boot at the first reboot . It would continuously loop. I tried "fixmbr" and "fixboot" several times without success. I finally got "fixmbr" and "fixboot" to work by reverting the entire Hard disk to Raw and starting afresh . Win XP eventually was re installed . I guess I will be waiting until May for the final release of MDK 10 , if the bugs are ironed out , and judging from my initial look at it the wait will be worth it .
  7. I have experiencd the same with Mandrake 10 , however Fixmbr and fixboot would not restore the MBR until I had removed MDK10 and Windows , I had to delete all partions only them would the MBR repair and allow XP to work. I was lucky that I had just completed a back up . I have never experienced this in a dual boot scenario before and I have installed , MDK 9 , 9.1, 9.2 . Fedora , RH 9 as a dual boot with XP completly successfully . This makes me reluctant to install MDK10 again until the final is released.
