  1. Running currently on 2010.2 I do wonder if any one knows if it is expected that upgrading from 2010.2 into 2011... is done by means of the update notification applet ?? Mandriva's website shows: You can also upgrade on-line. What that means is that the Mandriva update notification applet, Mandriva Online, will notify you that a new Mandriva Linux release (2011) is available, and ask if you wish to upgrade. If you agree, the upgrade will be carried out from within your running system, just like a regular system update. Has any one already seen the update coming up through the applet...?
  2. Problem solved with the help from Maurice of MC.NL It seemed that during my upgrade installation the package xdm not was installed and most likely gdm incorrectly installed. hence have installed xdm and removed -and reinstalled gdm package through MCC. All of the system functions normally now. Cheers, Fred
  3. in meanwhile I can start the system using safe mode // type'init 3' //enter user name //type 'startx' system than continues with a black screen with blue circle spinning around the mouse cursor and after a short while just starts my normal environment / and all is as it should be. Have also done following: in a console; typed 'su - gedit /etc/sysconfig/autologin' and put no into the one and only line in the file autologin // hence shows now as 'autologin=no' next I've opened MCC--> Software Management --> Install & Remove Software... put both dropdown mwnu's on 'All' en entered as search 'autologin' -- and removed the file. next I've entered in a terminal; 'rpmdb -v --rebuilddb' --> to rebuild the RPM database. Restarted the system // same result again - ie. remains stuck at the black screen with blue circle spinning around the mouse cursor" When rebooting using safe mode // type'init 3' //enter user name //type 'startx' system than continues with a black screen with blue circle spinning around the mouse cursor and after a short while just starts my normal environment / and all is as it should be. Any one any suggestions ?? Looks to me as if somewhere in a file the initiation to start the graphical environment is missing (startx ??) Question is what file in the start up cycle drives starting the graphical environment the way as thru safe mode is done with 'startx' ? Suggestions ??? RGDS Fred
  4. Mandriva 2010.1 running. Running Mandriva 2010.1 // Gnome desktop Everything worked fine until decided to set logging to automatic, through 'Systems, Administration', 'Login Screen' At first from Grub boot loader Mandriva loaded until the blue screen with the logging window, where my user name was shown. could just click enter and system continued loading Mandriva with my user environment (no password set/required). Everything worked fine until decided to set logging to automatic, through 'Systems, Administration', 'Login Screen' Now at the 'Login Screen' tool we've set the logging into automatic rebooting after 5 seconds. Now after reboot (day after), I do end up with the user login screen - showing 'automatic login' - then continues into the blue screen with a circle running around the mouse cursor, but nothing more happens // system stays in this screen. After rebooting - and when arriving at the user login screen, I do click 'esc' and than more login options appear, ie. my user name, automatic login and other. Whatever I try however / do keep returning in some sort of loop after the login screen -- the system remains in the blue screen with a circle running around the mouse. Looks like the system doesn;t know where to go / what to do after logon or so ? Please help --what to do to get ride of the change in the login screen made earlier I do want to go back to just hitting my user name and see the system continue to start up with my user environment. (with all my settings / environment as it used to be, before this change in the Login Screen) ----- What to do ? Please when advising anything with command strings and such // please give me a full description what to do, where and when with complete instructions and commands to type. I'm where it come to linux-commands really a novice and have no experience. Please when replying - place a copy of the reply in an email to my mail account so I can print it at work as my pc doesn't allow me anything now as per this issue. ---- fredkreyen@gmail.com ---- ================================== Hope to get reactions, Thanks in advance, RGDS Fred In meanwhile have tried through safe mode; in safe mode //typed 'init 3' -- next entered username and typed startx system started normal with my environment // all ok. But then -- have opened MCC --> boot // have set choice to autologin (for my username/Gnome) and rebooted -- however this time system remains hanging in a black screen with circle around mouse cursur running. ?? So thru safe mode / init 3 / startx --- all went fine, but following the setting at MCC it goes wrong again.... -------------------- Have checked 'etc/sysconfig/autologin' and that file shows aline 'autologin=yes' (nothing more. By the looks of it it seems that the issue is related to not starting the graphical environment after the login ?? So should there be some where some entry that tell the system to start the graphical environment. ? [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  5. Hi John, Basicly had something similar // although I'd nearly no color at all and screen was hardly to be seen. see my call on monitor colors lost after upgrade to 2010.1 solved the problem myself......... It seemed all about the OS not recognizing the video card. When checking through DrakX (hardware tab / Mandriva Ctrl Center) it seemed that the OS showed the video card most near mine (Radeon 9000AGP (not supported - ), but when performing a test it came back with 'no device found' Tried another video card / same result -- than have chosen once more the Radeon card of OS 1st choice ran a gain the test several times, untill the OS came back with color tested results and asked if these colors were ok. Accepted the choice and had to logout and back in again - and volia it worked again // all color is back. So wonder if same may solve your issue / hence at my end the card was recognized by the OS (nearest choice) but was apparently not found when performing the test..... Just by doing the test over and over, all of sudden card was recognized and color settings returned. You just want to give it a try. Cheers Fred (frm Holland)
  6. Ok folks, solved the problem myself......... It seemed all about the OS not recognizing the video card. 7. have successfully upgraded 2010.0 to 2010.1, but after rebooting seems to have lost monitor colors the screen remains pale / hardly colors / looks like as watching through a thick vale . monitor settings though are ok -- recognizes monitor type / resolution is ok. have rebooted all available kernels, but with same result. have checked in Windows, but there colors are ok. have tried with command (mdkapplet -upgrade-helper --new_distro_version=2010.1) to get perhaps a new download, but after downloading some files, system says upgrade is ok / should reboot system -- but result is same // no colors, etc. Any one any idea what do do to restore color setting on the system // now it seems not to really recognize colors, only very vague. ?? ---- Noticed that when downloading the files for the upgrade, the upgrade helper at the very end seemed to have crashed, as a msg. "upgrade helper crashed / apologizing for inconvenience" appeared. So have the feeling not all files were actually downloaded / installed at the end. However when I retry to upgrade using the command line, some files are being downloaded and then the system says that the upgrade is successful and should reboot the system. Is there some way to 'mis lead' the system that no upgrade took place and than some how be able to do all of the upgrade install all over again ? Please advise, ps. when possible please advise to my mail account / so I can read at work as this screen is a no go this way..... email = fredkreyen@gmail.com THANKS Fred
  8. Guys would like to thank you all for the assistance and in particular to John who socially submitted a DVD (correctly burnes as DVD-R ) and that worked fine. The whole thing is set up now correctly again. Cheers, Fred
  9. He Guys just wanted to post a tank you to all and in particular to John, who helped extraordinary socially by sending me a DVD All function well again / got all things as ASN, pigeon etc. up again also. Cheers, Fred
  10. Thanks David Followed the instruction you've provided and all done now. Mandriva talks again with XP and also can use Thunderbird again in the virtual setup -ie. with both on XP and Mandriva updating each other. Cheers Fred
  11. Could well be -- have indeed twice used DVD+R and both times also performed the MD5sum check Ken mentioned earlier --with as outcome that ISO couldn't be read// seems thus indeed a difference between using -R versus +R.
  12. After finaly being able to 2010 on the pc -- from a live CD, hence now I lost all settings. After painfully restoring things like hostnames, network name, printers etc. now able to ping the machine by host name from another pc, also able to see the shared printers on the new install from the other pc. Have also installed Gnome Commander (2009 version as 2010 seems to be missing files) and can now see each others shared directories again. However - the machine has dual boot with XP and I used to be able to see the contents of the XP portion when using the file manager and went to 'MNT' where I than found the Windows XP 'directory' and by clicking on that file the rest of the XP drive became visible in the file manager. -- where I could use the XP-portion to ao. store files from out Mandriva. Now I only see in MNT a directory named 'Install' created by the live cd. -- so can't find how t get back access to the XP portion of my disk. note; as we're using Thunderbird in a dual boot sharing environment where Thunderbird on Mandriva uses the Thunderbird on XP -- this is enoying as now I've lost the contents / setup of the accounts and all mailfolders, when being on Linux. Any idea how to get the Windows XP portion again visible in MNT ??
  13. Ok have done so / used md5sum check-- result hereunder. Looks like ISO file downloaded is not good ? file came from ftp://ftp.surfnet.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr [francien@bell1 Downloads]$ md5sum -c *.md5 md5sum: mandriva-linux-free-2010.0-i586.iso: No such file or directory mandriva-linux-free-2010.0-i586.iso: FAILED open or read md5sum: WARNING: 1 of 1 listed file could not be read [francien@bell1 Downloads]$ Any sugestion of a better and fast side ? Cheers, Fred
  14. Thanks Ken, Have to go to Dubai for work tomorrow, but when back will give it a try, Cheers Fred
  15. Sorry Ken for late reply / seems to be working more these days than other things. Maybe silly, but just how would do the md5sum check of the ISO ? Basically what I've done is just clicked the file to download and when done the download tool mentioned download to be ok ? Thanks Fred
  16. SilverSurfer, All, Sorry for late reply // have been entirely away from my email. FYI - I'm running GNOME not KDE; Well the problem is that I can't do either an upgrade or even a full install from a DVD, as when I boot from the DVD, the whole story as I wrote earlier starts to take place, with as result at the end: found a manidriva linux cdrom, good news! Total Memory: 512 Mbytes mount_compressed_may_preload: /tmp/image/install/ stage2 //mdkinst.sqfs into /tmp/stage2 (preload - 1) opening /proc/splash failed short write (Bad address) third party: using modules location /tmp/image fopen (stage1.c:355) failed: no such file or directory unsetting automatic exeting bootsplash opening /proc/splash failed ------------------------------ So, as you may see, I can't do either upgrade and/or total install. I've been trying to understand the (error) messages, but can\t exactly figure out what might be wrong, as the upgrade at the time from 2009.0 into 2002.1 worked fine, like all others before that. ------------------ Any one any suggestions / solutions ? Thanks RGDS Fred
  17. Forgot to mention that the pc is running dual-boot<; Mandriva 2009.1 & Windows XP Both Mandriva & XP are running fine. Have performed sev. times a chkdsk /r and chkdsk /f on XP but indicate no issues -- so can't imagine why when trying to upgrade Mandriva through the boot DVD this now should cause an issue with the error msgs as per above. Any one ? Cheers Fred
  18. I'm running 2009.1 - no problems ever -- however don't the auto installer that invites you to install an upgrade to 2010.0 so decided to download a full .iso package to install from boot. now I'm 2 dvd's further and still no go -- DVD's must be ok as they do install on someone else's pc. However when I put the dvd in my pc it starts booting from the disk; - the Mandriva blue screen comes up, starts loading - detecting usb devices - loading into memory...... and than....... Error Fatal error finshing initialisation Than you've to abort the process. - with alt-F3 you can see the log; =================================================================================== To add the whole story what happens after I start the pc with the installation DVD: Mounting /dev/sr0 on tmp/media as type iso 9660 have to insmod isofs needs t /lib/modules/2.6.31.5-desktop 586-1mnb/isofs.ko.gz succeeded isofs trying /tmp/media/i586 assuming media /i586 is a mirror tree found a manidriva linux cdrom, good news! When I remove lines from the hidden file .MdkOnline the autoloader on next start up asks if I want to upgrade, but also requires a login id (email) and passord -- to allow the upgrade from 2009.1 to 2010.0 to start......... Any solutions / suggestions ? Thanks,
  19. Dear folks, Sorry for contacting you this way, concerning issues with the update distributions of 2010. We have linux Mandriva on a pc for my wife (handicapt / cancer0 because of its friendlyness and ease in use. We're running 2009.1, but would have expected that through the auto updater, now the new version would be offered for download/install. However, nothing happens, remains on 2009.1 and no invitation shows up if we want to update to the new available version. Don't know why, but have looked by advise to a hidden file called .MdkOnline using the command (cat ./.MdkOnline/mdkonline ) this comes back with: [francien@bell1 ~]$ cat ./.MdkOnline/mdkonline DO_NOT_ASK_FOR_DISTRO_UPGRADE= true DO_NOT_ASK_FOR_RESTRICTED=true [francien@bell1 ~]$ Don't know what to to now, but would love to get this pc for my wife upgraded/running distribution 2010.0 Can you please advice what to do now ? (if needed my email = fredkreyen@gmail.com )
  20. Thanks Greg, I've used the solution suggested and with success. cd /usr/lib/cups/backend chmod 700 parallel Checking on the remote pc starting the System-config-printer tool, learned that the LPT #1 port was back as a choice. Running the same solution on the pc where the printer was hooked up, even gave a more remarkable outcome -- not the LPT #1 was chown in he list of device choices, but the actual printer showed up as a valid choice. After accepting that settings, all worked well // test page printed ok, and also other print job , also from the remote pc are picked up successfully again.
  21. Thanks -- correct / wasn't sure were the issue would belong to. BTW - as additional information; it concerns here a Mandriva supported printer (Canon-BJC-210) -- hooked up to the parallel port.
  22. Since upgrading to 2009.1 seems to have lost connection to LPT #1 and attached printer. Using the new printer tool under 2009.1, ie. System-config-printer / see url http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/System-config-printer I'm also unable to 'find' my printer attached to the pc's local parallel port = LPT#1 In fact the System-config-printer tool not even displayed the LPT #1 as a choice , hence the tool when selecting to add a new printer does not come back with the choices as shown on the for mentioned link - the LPT #1 is not included as a choice. Seems as if after upgrading to 2009.1, connection to the LPT#1 is gone // same issue on another pc. The System-config-printer tool comes nicely back with a printer attached to an url port, when the printer is turned on and doesn't show this vary same printer when turned of before requesting the config tool to add a new printer. So it really looks as if the pc's have lost connection to the parallel port (LPT port) and thus no local printers attached to that port are being found as result. Any suggestions on how to check if the system (still) knows/has connection to the parallel port (LPT port) and / or how to (re)set this up (again) ?? Thanks in advance, Fred
  23. I' new to using Linux / Mandriva and hope the questions I've are being replied on (fredkreyen@gmail) and hopefully some solutions being provided. THANKS My issue is; Since a short while I've setup Mandriva Linux (2009.0) on pc's at home in a dual-boot mode with Windows XP. My printers are physically attached / and linked to one pc. Under XP the pc's are set up as a small LAN, ie. pc's have their names and share a common network name. Under XP I can print from another pc, through the pc with printers attached, to the resp. printers. Managed to do same under Linux , where Linux has - when setting up / adding a new printer - has the ability to look for a (Windows) printer / using 'smb' (Samba). Thus that way can print from out Linux pc to the printer attached to the pc running XP at that moment. However, when all pc's are running Linux, I've no way finding / or adding a new printer that physically is attached to one of the pc's (see above) -- even adding IP addresses of the 'host' doesn not help. Any suggestions ? -------------------------------- Also - don't know if related to above, but under XP, I'm able to actualy see and use the shared folders of the pc's between one and other and from one and other. Doing same seems impossible (at least to me) under Linux ? Have already assiged host names to the pc's - which btw are hooked up to a router - which provides IP-addresses to the pc's like 192.168.1.103 / 192.168.1.101 etc. and have under etc/hosts named he pc's as eg. fred1.sloep74.com and bell1.sloep74.com -- respectively in: etc/hosts --------------- 127.0.0.1 localhost 192.168.1.101 fred1.sloep74.com fred1 127.0.0.1 localhost 192.168.1.103 bell1.sloep74.com bell1 and a laptop with: 127.0.0.1 fred.lap1.com lap1 localhost and the following entries all the same for all three pc's; etc/sysconfig/network ------------------------------------- HOSTNAME=<hostname> ie. like above - thus eg. fred1.sloep74.com etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcg-eth0 --------------------------------------------------------------- DHCP_HOSTNAME=<hostname> ie. like above - thus eg. fred1.sloep74.com =========================================================== But despite all this and fact I've put folders in the shared mode on the pc's under Linux, nothing is found when looking under places, networks etc. So when you've any suggestions -- these are welcome, Thanks in advance, Fred Kreyen Netherlands
  24. Thanks Ian, Think you might be right -- my pc has pre-installed Windows / plus other applications and has a re-covery function/CD. so presume some of the pre-installed SW + recovery modes are hidden on the disk. The total HD = 120GB and when I got the pc. at first, the available space was 109GB. now still some 90GB on free space left. What stroke me however was that Linux came back with a HDA as being D:, where within Windows I only can see the C: However with Mandriva indicating this D: with a volume of 109GB looks like it sees all of the available C: -- only indicates it as D: (although still don't understand why Linux referes to the HD as D: where Windows sees it as C:) So actualy I presume in that case that whan I would indeed use and tick option D = hda(D:)(109GB),/mnt/win_d,nfts-3g) to format, Mandriva should have the right space on the HD to look for partioning and crating the dual-boot mode keeping Windows along side ? Fred
  25. Folks, I'm at 1st time of my live trying to do an installation of Installation Mandriva 2008-1 spring on a Windows XP machine. The pc. has a HDA with Windows XP -- and through 'my computer' it shows as: C = HD (120GB) D = DVD station E = CD-RW station My wish is to create a dual-boot on the pc. with both XP and Linus installed -- so that Linus can also read the data I've on windows. So I started with running 'CHKDSK' followed by 'defragmentation', than rebooted with the Mandriva DVD in de DVD-drive and got as far as the installation menu, some windows further the installation menu already provided me the choice to "Use the free space on the Microsoft Windows partion". So clicked 'next' and got the window re. Formatting where I've to choose the partions I want to format -- at this point the installation window shows the possibilities: - hda(C:)(1.9GB),/mnt/win_c,vfat) - hda(D:)(109GB),/mnt/win_d,nfts-3g) standard the first entry is ticked as choice = hda(C:)(1.9GB),/mnt/win_c,vfat), but when clicking 'next' Mandriva comes back with an error message: "Partioning failed: your Microsoft Windows partion is too fragmented - Please reboot your computer under Microsoft Windows, run "defrag" utility, then restart Mandriva Linux installation." Did again the 'CHKDSK' followed by 'defragmentation', than rebooted with the Mandriva DVD in de DVD-drive and got same error message. My point is that as within Windows XP the configuration shows that I (only) have one HDA = C: -- I thought Linux also has to use C for the installation, and don't understand why the Mandriva installation comes back with also an HDA=D: ( as within Windows my D: is the DVD-drive station) . So my question is if the above is a known effect and if the above story means I can install Mandriva using the 2nd option in the fragmentation window of the installation program, thus hda(D:)(109GB),/mnt/win_d,nfts-3g) without running the risk Mandriva is going to use all of my disk and whipes out XP. ?? Thanks in advance, Fred
