  1. I have had sound - configured with sndconfig from the command line and many applications would play sound but no sound from KDE and aRts could not initialize sound i/o errors. Finally figured this out. I set aRts to use OSS and specified a custom device (/dev/dsp). Now I have sound from applications and from KDE all of the windows and startup sounds work. :D Hardware Compaq laptop with ESS 1868. Sndconfig set the sb module to work. When I had sound from some apps, I just had to keep trying until I found the right combination to get KDE to play sounds too. I don't know if this is common knowledge and I have just been oblivious to it or not. Hope this helps someone.
  2. I have a Cisco Aironet 340 in a laptop which works wonderfully. Is there any way to configure the system to have 2 different wireless configs one for home and one for the office? Home net is on a different channel and of course a different WEP key is used. I do have wireless tools installed and right now I am having to go through network reconfiguration each time I use the system at the other location. I am sure someone has been through this so Ithought I would ask and benefit from the vast knowledge out here instead of banging my head against the wall. Thanks in advance Steve
  3. Laptop I use for work: Compaq Armada 7330 P166 80 meg 2 Gb hd Cisco Aironet 340 PCMCIA wireless ESS audio - not functional S3 Aurora64V+ video at 800x600 I use this system for wireless coverage surveys and security testing. Also use Open Office quite extensively on this system for reports, graphs, drawings, etc. to give to clients. The system is also used as a general network workstation when I am in the office for email, word processing, etc. It's a little slow but much better and more stable than with Windoze on the same system.

Thanks, BVC, That was the problem. When I looked at the partitions as you suggested instead of using diskdrake, I saw the problem. I had to remove all of the partitions on the drive and repartition it. Now I have the full size of the drive available as an ext3 file system and shared via Samba for my wife's windows system to use as well. Thanks again Steve

    new hd

I just installed a new hard disk in my system. Mandrake 9.1. Pretty much default install. new drive is 20 gb partition in 18 and 2 gb partitions 18 gb partition is ext3. mke2fs -j /dev/hdb1 it is reporting as 5.9 gb but when I use diskdrake to view the partitions, it shows the correct size. I have tried putting more than 5.9 gb of files on the drive and it says it is full when I get to 5.9. Anyone got any ideas what I did wrong? Thanks Steve
