  1. Okay, I have a zipped file and I was able to unzip it to a directory.

Now I ended up with a file which is executable but I know it doesn't run in Windows 'cause I tried it already. In windows it shows no file extension.

Then in Mandrake I use a hex editor to open this file and it tells me this:

$Info: This file is packed with the UPX executable packer /http://upx.sf.net $

·$Id: UPX 1.24 Copyright © 1996-2002 the UPX Team. All Rights Reserved. $

So I went to the site mentioned above and was reading, I think this file has been encoded using this UPX thingy. My question is: Should I install this in my linux box in order to make this executable work?

Or should I maybe install this in windows and run the executable, 'cause I think Windows is the one that uses .exe files, right?

  2. Thanks for all answers.

Yes I heard of antivirus proggies for linux, AVG has one. But I don't feel like setting one up. Do you guys use one?

Right now, I have used Firebid as my main browser, I do know how to keep this under control here, < internet history, cookies and else >

I was curious about hard disk space, like one month from now, I could erase tmp folders or stuff Linux has been caching that I don't need so I can make a little more room to my drive.

About running as *su*, I would only do this if I need special privileges to run a command, though I don't browse the web as root, just in case.

  3. I am very new to linux, but I do like to learn new stuff a lot.

I have been using Mandrake 9.2 for the last two weeks.

    Finally got it working.

Mozilla Firebird with flash and java enabled.

I know how to uncompress a file and some other installation steps.

Now I am just curious...........me being a Windows user for a long time.

In windows you need an antivirus, you need some kind of software to remove ads or spyware, you also need programs to get rid of your history either in your pc as in your browser. Knowing this, what is the deal in Linux?

I mean, do you need an antivirus, spyware removal tool, history deletion proggie? in Linux?

Or is it that you would never get infected by a virus, worm, trojan, etc.

Does Linux cache? no need to delete history?

Hope somebody can enlighten me a little bit.

  4. My suggestion is to do the symlink with the right path.

    Better yet, I did this:

    su

    cd /usr/local/MozillaFirebird/plugins

    ls

    ..........>all plugins listed here<...........

    Then typed this:

    rm -i nameofthejavafile

and removed the file I created before which is libjavaplugin_oji.so@

as I have given it the wrong path.

    Then I did this:

    ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_03/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so

    voila, worked like a charm.

Now I am able to see java, hehehe.

  5. -rwxr-xr-x    1 root  root          856 Jan 27 21:03 flashplayer.xpt*

    -rwxr-xr-x    1 root  root      1470464 Jan 27 21:03 libflashplayer.so*

    lrwxrwxrwx    1 root  root        61 Jan 27 22:10 libjavaplugin_oji.so -> /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_03/plugin/i586/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so

    -rwxrwxr-x    1 8482  501      21056 Oct  7 21:00 libnullplugin.so*

This is what happened to me. I realized I have typed the wrong i586.

    How can I fix this?

Should I do the install again? or can I just symlink again with the right path name?

  6. This is the way I did it:

My first main drive has Windows XP Pro < master drive >

So I decided to install Mandrake 9.2 in my second drive < slave drive >

I went to BIOS and change it so it can boot from my cd rom.

Put my installation CD1 in the cd rom and then restart my pc.

Then when I reboot it I had the installation cd screen on my pc. Just follow directions given by CD, depending on how much stuff you decide to install you may need all 3 CDs.

I would recommend to read a little more before installing so you know what to do or just install the basics and as you go install what u need later.

The CD1 does it all, it has a fdisk utility which will partition your drive and format it.

Choose The default path for this partition stuff.

    My specs:

    /boot ................................................100M.......................ext3

    /swap.................................................512M......................l

    inux swap

    /root....................................................37GB....................

    ...reiserfs

Right before it ends it will install LILO as your bootloader or I think you can choose Grub too from the CD, not sure. Anyways LILO is the easiest one for new linux ppl, like me.

Once installation is done, remove your cd, go to your BIOS again, make it so you can boot from your master drive again. Reboot done.

It will bring you to a screen where LILO bootloader will give you the option wether to start using Linux .. LinuxFB .. Windows........................Then here you have to choose either Linux or Windows.

  7. I also followed this link

    http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=4548

    Same here no luck.

I can see in my in /usr/local/MozillaFirebird/plugins/:

    flashplayer.xpt

    libflashplayer.so

    libjavaplugin_oji.so

    libnullplugin.so

but when I go to a page with java, Firebird tells me I need to install plugin.

Sorry to interrupt in this thread like this. I don't need you to answer me but the originator of this thread, I am just sharing my experiences with Mandrake and suggestions by this forum.

By the way I did follow suggestions about installing flashplayer and this one worked alright.
