  1. I'm thinking of ditching my Mandrake distro (sorry  ) Work uses Red Hat Enterprise Linux and I really should maintain some sort of compatability with them. If I install FC3 when it comes out, what will happen to LILO and my dual boot with MS? I would like to stay with Mandrake, but I just can't justify (to my wife ) the expense of buying the Mandrake Powerpack.
  2. Hi All, Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the graphical installation working for RH EL WS on an Athlon64? I'm stuck with the text install at the mo, which is rubbish. I am literally (and it hurts!) Andy
  3. Thanks for all the replies and offers of CD's. I was thinking of putting 8.0 on it, but if 8.2 works then I might as well put that on (from what I've read it is much better than 8.0 or 8.1). I can still download it ok. I'm going to be using it to teach lads in the Boys' Brigade Company I help run about Linux. They all seem to be M$ fans at the mo, so I need to "spread the word". Andy
  4. Which version of Mandrake will run on an old AMDK6 233MHz box with 64Mb Ram, ATi Rage Pro Turbo (PCI) and a 4.3 GB hard disk drive? I used to have MDK7.0 but I lost the disks when I moved house. TIA. Andy
  5. Tried that. Didn't work. I also disallowed anonymous ftp, not I can't ftp in at all. What si the format of the vsftpd.chroot_list file? What I don't understand is that all the ftp files I can see are exactly the same as on our other RH box which we can ftp to, but we can't ftp to the new one. It's strange. Thanks for your help. Andy
  6. Hi All, We've got a number of *nix boxes ranging from Sun UltraSparc III boxes through to a Red Hat Linux cluster that is just getting built. I'm trying to get ftp to work on the cluster master node (full installation of RH8) but all it will allow is anonymous logins. We use NIS for user authentication and I can't see any difference between this RH8 box and another RH8 box on the same network, but I can't log in to it. Any ideas anyone? I'm getting furious3 a bit annoyed... Andy (I love smileys... :P )
  7. Thanks anon. That's very useful. When will they become available in the shops? I'm just trying to decide whether to bite the bullet and download the 9.1 ISOs or wait until I can buy the 9.2 ISOs (I would like the Intel compilers and all the other goodies that go with the retail versions) from PC World. (Maybe they will misprice it again, like they did with 9.1 and sell it at £20. I didn't have any cash on me at the time, so I couldn't buy it... ) Talking of compilers, what about AMD compilers for Athlon specific optimisations? Intel are okay I suppose, but the codes I run on my system run *much* faster on AMD then Intel. (Nearly a factor of two in some cases!) Andy
  8. Okay, I finally got on to the www.mandrakesoft.com website, but none of the links to www.mandrakelinux.com or www.mandrakestore.com work. I would like to know how much the Prosuite and Powerpack editions of MDK9.2 cost (in pounds would be good, but Euros I think I can cope with...) I don't know whether it is our company firewall that is the problem, but whenever I try and connect to either of the above sites, I eventually get the message that there is no response from the remote server. Wierd. Andy
  9. Hi All, the messageheader says it all. I can't seem to connect to the website. Has anyone else had this problem? Andy
  10. Hi All, I'm thinking of buying MDK 9.1 and installing it on my 6 Gb Linux partition on my 30Gb HDD. It's currently occupied by RH8 booting via a dual boot option (with winME) in grub. My question is, how can I erase RH8 from my Linux partition, install MDK 9.1 and still be able to boot to Window$ when I want? I was thinking of just using Partition Magic to format the Linux partition, but I noticed a different thread talk about using SuSe to remove grub, then reinstalling grub when installing Mandrake. I'm a little confused. Can anyone help? Thanks Andy
  11. Hi all, I think I may have figured out why I've been having problems with my install of MDK 9.0, but I would like some opinions about it... I've got a system (from my father-in-law) that is a 1.1GHz Athlon (200MHz FSB), with 256Mb RAM, 30GB HDD, M$Win ME, Gigabyte GA7-IXE4 mobo, 50x CDrom and Samsung SB-408B CD-RW. Now, I've been having the system halt on me as it is going through the installation process, last night didn't even get to second stage install before it halted. Anyway, I was wondering whether it is the arrangement of the CD-RW and CD-ROM that could be the cause of the problem. When I set the BIOS to boot from CD, the boot device is the CD-RW. COuld this be what is causing me the problem? If I change the connectors around, and boot from the CD not the CD-RW, does anyone think that I'll get MDK installed? I've got MDK7.2 on at the mo, but it doesn't recognise any CD devices... Thanks Andy :?
  12. Okay, just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons... Which is the better distro to use for "number crunching"? I'm trying to set up a cluster of old PII Comcraps at work, and I have a choice of distros, ML9.0 (my preferred choice, even if I can't get it to install at home! :( ), RH8.0 (never used, but our clients are looking at it) and Debian 3.0. Has anyone got any ideas on which would be the better distro for a cluster? Thanks in advance (please don't flame me ) Andy
  13. I've got this problem with MDK7.2. I've got the icon for the cdrom on the KDE desktop, but I don't have access to it, either as root or as me. I get the i/o error the same as you. I'm part of the group that can access the drive, but nothing happens when I try accessing. I've tried mounting the drive, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas? Btw, the system is a 1.1GHz Athlon on a GA7-IXE4 mb with 256Mram GeForce4MX graphics, soundcard, Samsung SB408(?) cdrw and a creative 50x cdrom. Thanks from a (1 week user) noobie. Andy :?
