  1. I installed jack and every plugin for it I could find but can't figure out how to get it running. Does it have a utility akin to alsaconf? Is it that much better than just using alsa that it's worth the learning curve?
  2. Having tinkered with my new 2007.1 install to the point that a bunch of stuff wasn't working, I did a fresh install. Now it won't boot! It boots partway, then just freezes. I even went so far as to do another complete fresh install, reformatting the partition (don't worry--I saved all my important stuff elsewhere) and starting with a clean slate. Still nothing. I did a tail of /var/log/syslog and didn't see anything particularly revealing (to me): May 5 13:58:09 localhost kernel: Freeing SMP alternatives: 16k freed May 5 13:58:09 localhost kernel: checking if image is initramfs... it is May 5 13:58:09 localhost kernel: Freeing initrd memory: 733k freed May 5 13:58:09 localhost kernel: ACPI: Looking for DSDT in initramfs... error, file /DSDT.aml not found. I can boot in safe mode. The other thing that baffles me is that when I watch the bootup process, it does not always freeze up at the same place. So I can't say that it freezes when it tries to bring up the network, or when it brings up this or that, because sometimes that's where it freezes and sometimes it isn't. :( Update: The ACPI thingy didn't like my BIOS, or my BIOS didn't like it. Anyway, disabling it solved the problem. Nods to Dr. Google for helping me solve this.
  3. Ack. Now I can't get any sound. Can't open /dev/dsp. I run alsaconf, and it says it worked, but I get nothing. :(
  4. No, not for local delivery. I want to send something out to an e-mail address on the Internet.
  5. Here's my /etc/hosts now: 127.0.0.1 home.sammckee.com localhost Now the tail of my syslog looks like this: May 4 20:58:04 localhost sendmail[30877]: l450w4Zh030877: from=javaguy, size=13, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=<200705050058.l450w4Zh030877@javaguyhost>, relay=javaguy@localhost May 4 20:58:04 localhost sendmail[30878]: l450w4WZ030878: from=<javaguy@javaguyhost>, size=287, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=<200705050058.l450w4Zh030877@javaguyhost>, proto=ESMTP, daemon=MTA, relay=home.sammckee.com [127.0.0.1] May 4 20:58:04 localhost sendmail[30878]: l450w4WZ030878: to=<javaguy@sammckee.com>, delay=00:00:00, mailer=esmtp, pri=30287, dsn=4.4.3, stat=queued May 4 20:58:04 localhost sendmail[30877]: l450w4Zh030877: to=javaguy@sammckee.com, ctladdr=javaguy (500/500), delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, pri=30013, relay=home.sammckee.com. [127.0.0.1], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (l450w4WZ030878 Message accepted for delivery) ...but the message never arrives.
  6. /etc/hosts is: 127.0.0.1 javaguyhost.localhost javaguyhost I get a returned mail saying: ----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors ----- <javaguy@sammckee.com> (reason: 550-Verification failed for <javaguy@javaguyhost.localhost>) ----- Transcript of session follows ----- ... while talking to sammckee.com.: >>> DATA <<< 550-Verification failed for <javaguy@javaguyhost.localhost> <<< 550-unrouteable mail domain "javaguyhost.localhost" <<< 550 Sender verify failed 550 5.1.1 <javaguy@sammckee.com>... 7. While we're on the subject, does anybody have any recommendations for what UPS to use with a box running Mandriva?
  8. Before anybody asks, yes I went to the KDE sound system thingy (I think that's the technical term for it), and yes, sound is enabled. Whenever I log in I get no sound. Then I switch to root and run alsaconf, and sound works just fine for most things. I still can't get any of the KDE notification sounds to play--even when I go into the tool where you configure them and click the button to "preview" a notification sound, it won't play. But for everything "important," i.e. games and music, I get sound. If I log out and log back in again, however, I have to switch to root and run alsaconf again to get it to work. This is an area of Linux I would love to see somewhat standardized across distributions. Sound configuration should not be rocket science.
  9. Postfix is just a mailer, right? Not a full mail server? I need something that doesn't burn up a lot of cpu cycles while I'm gaming. ;)
  10. I followed those instructions, and everything looked okay, but I still get May 3 20:00:25 localhost sendmail[21693]: My unqualified host name (localhost) unknown; sleeping for retry :( Incidentally, I'm not married to sendmail. It's just the one I'm familiar with. If anybody can suggest another simple mail-sending utility, I'm all ears. I just don't want to set up a mail server; I want to send messages not become a mail admin. :)
  11. As part of my M2007.1 installation adventure, I tried running Wolfenstein Enemy Territory. No sound! :( Before you ask, yes I did echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss as root. That worked like a charm under my old installation. (Sound does work on other stuff, btw).
  12. Okay, I tried setting a hostname in MCC/Networking/Reconfigure Network Interface/DHCP, but I still get the same error message. :(
  13. Why, to mine, of course. The one called localhost. ;) Seriously though, I'll give that a whirl and let you know.
  14. When I send a message via sendmail it never arrives. I get the following in the syslog: sendmail[10331]: My unqualified host name (localhost) unknown; sleeping for retry I use DHCP and don't really have a host name--my /etc/hosts just says 127.0.0.1 localhost I'm not exactly sure what it's looking for. Any suggestions?
  15. It's off. I still can't connect. I sort of doubt that it's the network b/c I can play WoW with no problem.
  16. It connect fine on a Windows partition, so if it's a firewall issue it has to be in Linuxland. Is there a way I can check to see if this is the problem?
  17. I just installed the new Cedega and, for the first time ever, am able to run Warcraft III. One thing though: When I try to connect to b-net it hangs forever. Single-player works fine.
  18. Woo hoo! That is way cool. Now I can have a cron job that sends an actual voice message to my phone to notify me when...uh, I'll think of something I want to be notified of. One thing, the resulting .wav was a little scratchy, although it sounds fine when I run festival by itself. Does this have something to do with my system?
  19. I think Festival just became my new favorite toy. It's easy to pipe stuff to: echo "The sixth sheik's sixth sheep's sick" | festival --tts or echo "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" | festival --tts To test out the tts function I saved a long news story to a text file and ran it. My wife suggested I try it with a copy-paste of a long entry from an online rhyming dictionary. I tried this, and as it read more rhymes, the voice got slower and deeper, and finally started to sputter, then fell silent. My wife said, "My God, you've killed him." Festival cannot pronounce my wife's name correctly but comes closer to getting it right than any telemarketer ever has. Does anybody know an easy way to generate a .wav or .mp3 using Festival? 20. Done. Easiest, best install I've had yet. Woo hoo.
  21. Is there a bare-bones installer that will do a network install of the official 2007.1? Yes, I'm really thinking about doing this on a Friday night.
  22. I once had this happen. It stopped when I moved my elbow. ;)
  23. Good distro. Badly managed business. I paid for it once back when it was Mandrake. I'll spare you the details, but it was not a good experience, to say the least.
  24. I'm a programmer approaching the age of 40, and I love my job. I don't care if the generation coming up doesn't want to program--that just means I'll get paid more for my services. I have never found programming to be boring or tedious in any way. From time to time I encounter a tedious or repetitive task...and I write a utility program to automate that task. There's always interesting stuff to do in software land.
