  1. I installed and took a look at it. It looks to me like it's an application to download photos from digital cameras. Quickcam is a webcam. In any case I couldn't figure out how to connect to it in GTKam.
  2. I am currently trying to get a Logitech QuickCam Chat WebCam 2.0 to work. Here's what appears in syslog when I plug it in: Feb 22 09:09:06 localhost kernel: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj. Feb 22 09:09:06 localhost kernel: usb 2-9: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3 Feb 22 09:09:06 localhost kernel: usb 2-9: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Feb 22 09:09:06 localhost kernel: gspca: probing 046d:092e Feb 22 09:09:06 localhost kernel: gspca: probe ok Feb 22 09:09:06 localhost kernel: usb 2-9: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=092e Feb 22 09:09:06 localhost kernel: usb 2-9: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 Feb 22 09:09:06 localhost kernel: usb 2-9: Product: Camera Feb 22 09:09:06 localhost kernel: usb 2-9: Manufacturer: Here's my lsusb: Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:092e Logitech, Inc. Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 This time around, all software packages "see" it, i.e. when I go to select my video device in Skype, Ekiga, camstream, frameworks or whatever, the camera is listed as /dev/video1. (I have a TV card at /dev/video0). However, when I attempt to use it I either get green static or the application shuts down. In camstream when I try to use the camera I get a message that says "The device experienced an error -22 (Invalid argument). The window will be closed." Any thoughts?
  3. I'm trying to record a movie with xvidcap but getting no sound. In the configuration the default sound device is /dev/dsp, but apparently that's not it (I have multiple sound devices). How do I get a listing of what /dev/... the sound devices are using?
  4. You want to print out the files with "main" in them, or just list their names? If you want to print the files out, you should say cat $file not echo $file.
  5. I can't believe nobody has given the obvious answer: "Hello!" :P
  6. It's a webcam. The light on the camera comes on when I plug it in--there's power to the camera from the USB port to be sure. No apps that I've found recognize it. Here's what appears in syslog when I plug it in: Feb 9 22:21:39 localhost kernel: usb 2-9: New USB device found, idVendor=0ac8, idProduct=303b Feb 9 22:21:39 localhost kernel: usb 2-9: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 Feb 9 22:21:39 localhost kernel: usb 2-9: Product: PC Camera Feb 9 22:21:39 localhost kernel: usb 2-9: Manufacturer: Vimicro Corp. 7. Is there a plain-English guide to how to install a USB camera and get it working? I'd like to get a Vimicro 301 Neptune recognized as a video device, but I'm stumped. I don't even begin to know what to do.
  8. How do I transfer my address book and mail filters into the new Kmail? Somewhat more urgently...How do I set up a printer? Mandriva 2008 had a printer setup icon in mcc. 2009 does not.

    KDE 4.2

It's visually okay but seems pretty klunky to me. With the old KDE I could click on the taskbar or on the desktop and create a shortcut to an application, or to a directory and it would open a Konqueror window to show that directory. How do I do that in the new KDE?
  10. I'm planning to upgrade to 2009 soon, but the changing partition names sound like shifting sands I don't want to get into. Is there a way to upgrade to 2009 without switching to UUID?
  11. I anybody here using a bluetooth headset with the mic? If so what kind of headset and how easy was it to get it set up w/ Mandriva? How's the sound quality? I use my headset for gaming and Skype and would really like to free myself of the cord.

How did you get Ventrilo working?
  13. There's a /backup directory under your root partition. I expect you see whatever's there when the drive is unmounted. Then when you mount the drive under /backup, you see in /backup whatever's on the drive.
  14. By default JavaScript cannot paste from the clipboard. I believe it can copy to the clipboard. But yeah, be very careful what you put on the clipboard, especially password/credit card stuff. Back when I was a Windows user, before getting up from the keyboard I had a habit of always hitting the PrintScreen button, which put a screenshot on the clipboard, overwriting whatever was previously there.
  15. The clipboard has never saved stuff for me after I close the application from which it was copied or cut. It never ocurred to me that this was a behavior I could configure; I just assumed that it was a security consideration. The clipboard in MS Windows is, in my opinion, a gaping security hole.
  16. Still no luck. This mystifies me because it worked a couple weeks ago. :(
  17. Yeah, I modprobed it. usb_storage now appears in the list of mods, but /dev/sdb (or any /dev/sd* after sda) does not appear in fdisk -l, and it won't mount.

  19. I bought an external drive for backups (two of them, actually, keep one in a safe deposit box and swap them once a month). It used to be so simple. It always appeared as device /dev/sdb1 (sda was my SATA drive), it had an fstab entry, and I just said mount /media/usb. Now it is no longer recognized at all by the system. The one thing I can think of that has changed is that I have installed a GeForce 9800 card. When I try to mount, it says no such device /dev/sdb1. fdisk -l shows devices /dev/sda1 (and sda2, etc), /dev/hda1 (and hda2, etc), but absolutely no /dev/sdb1 or any other /dev/sdsomething beyond sda1, which is my SATA drive. 20. I downloaded and burned a CD, but in the middle of starting up I get a black screen and two lines of text that say "AUDIT [blahblahblah...]" I'm on my way out to the movies right now but will check again later to make sure I didn't just burn a bad CD. Wish me luck.
  21. Do the Nvidia drivers that Mandriva automagically installs when I set up my display fully support GeForce 9800 GTX? Where would I find this information? I'm trying to figure out if I should use the rpm or install the drivers from the Nvidia site.
  22. That doesn't really work for my purposes. This is the drive that I use for backups. I want the file ownerships and permissions to stay what they are. My backup script runs with root permission and mounts it read-write to make backups, then unmounts it. When I'm logged in as me, I want to be able to mount it and look at it if necessary but not be able to muck with it, i.e. accidentally screw something up royally. So far the solution of having two fstab entries for it is working for me.
  23. Will that allow any wheel group member to su to any other wheel group member without a password? I'm not sure if that's what I want. Then again I'm not sure it isn't. ;)
  24. I have a follow-up question then. If I just want to sudo (I don't) I can set up my sudoers entry for that command with the NOPASSWD option so that I can just run the command, fire-and-forget. Is there a way to set up my account so that I can do the same thing with a plain su?
