  1. Stage 1 installs of Gentoo aren't challenging anymore. And like I said, no LFS. I just hated that install. I don't plan on installing anything that will replace Gentoo. I just want to install, learn how to use it and then maybe replace it with something else. Okay, tell me more about BSD as I know nothing about it.

  2. Ok, I have three distros installed now and I've become rather bored. I switched to Debian to get my wireless working on the lappy because no matter what I tried in Mandriva (and I got lots of suggestions) it just wouldn't work consistently. It was quite a challenge to get it working in Debian and I certainly learned a lot to get a stable connection! I even had to manually configure dhcp! :o Problem solved. Gentoo is working like a dream. No problems there. I just installed Mandriva 2007.1 and except for a problem I learned how to fix with the kde menu there's nothing left to do except wait for updates when it's on the mirrors. So . . . I have one spare partition and lots of time. Any ideas as to what I could put on it that would be challenging yet fun? Come on, let's hear some ideas. Nothing easy though. Too boring. And no, I won't do lfs again. Ick!

  3. They haven't done anything new with the KDE menus. Mandriva has always screwed them up. Other distros that I use have the default KDE way and it's just so much better. It's set up where it's easier to understand. Mandriva choses to put software in weird categories so it's harder to find. I'm just baffled with why they do it.

  4. Well I installed 2007.1. I haven't had much of a chance to play with it yet. I'll wait until the easy-urpmi mirrors are set up but once again I am very disappointed with kde. They continue to ruin it by changing up the menu. If only they would leave it as the default. It's so much better.

  5. Well this happened once before and paul was able to easily fix it. I'm just waiting to hear from him. I'm checking the zarb.org site to see when they add the 2007.1 mirrors so I can rsync with them again. Hopefully we'll have the issue solved by then.

  6. It's an error message that showed up after I rsynced the other day. It shouldn't affect functionality. I contacted paul to take a look at it because he's our php expert but he's been strangely absent. I apologize and hopefully we'll get it fixed soon.

  7. I've settled for ACER Aspire 5610ANWLMi (Intel Core Solo T1350)

It comes bundled with some kind of Linux and suits my needs,

I'll just upgrade the 60GB hd to 100gb.

I have an Acer Aspire also although a different model. From what I've read Acer Aspire's all use Broadcom Air Force One wireless, Is this the card you have or do you have a different one? Mine has been a nightmare in Mandriva so I switched to Debian and was able to solve my wireless problems.

  8. I am seriously impressed with Debian Etch. I'm going to replace Mandriva on my desktop with Debian and probably switch back and forth between it and Gentoo. The community is also a lot different than I'd heard. People have always told me that Debian users like to say RTFM and are quite rude. But the Debian community has been very nice and helpful. Thanks Greg2 for suggesting it!
