  1. New problem. I'm trying to install xchat. Here's what I get:

    [root@localhost X11]# pacman -S xchat
    resolving dependencies... done.
    looking for inter-conflicts... done.

    Targets: xchat-2.8.0-1

    cleaning up... done.
    (1/1) checking for file conflicts				   [#####################] 100%
    error: could not prepare transaction
    error: failed to commit transaction (not enough space on disk)

    Here's what I get from df -h

    /dev/hda8 13G 1.6G 11G 13% /mnt/arch

    That's 11G free.

  2. Ok, instead of starting a new thread I thought I'd go back to this one. I was able to get arch successfuly installed but decided to finish the install from within Gentoo in a chroot environment. Before I can get any farther though I need internest access.

    Here's the problem:

    From /etc/rc.conf

    # Note: to use DHCP, set your interface to be "dhcp" (eth0="dhcp")
    #
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="dhcp 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast xxxxxxxxx"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0)

    error message when restarting the network

    [root@localhost /]# /etc/rc.d/network restart
    :: Stopping Network [BUSY] SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
    dhcp: unknown interface: No such device
    SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device
    SIOCSIFBRDADDR: No such device
    dhcp: unknown interface: No such device
    dhcp: unknown interface: No such device

    This is the output of ifconfig

    [root@localhost /]# ifconfig
    Warning: cannot open /proc/net/dev (No such file or directory). Limited output.
    eth0	  Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:11:11:4A:F0:F3

    	  UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

    Googling has turned up nothing.

    Edit: got that problem solved from the archlinux irc channel

  3. I tried what you suggested scarecrow and used cfdisk and made the partitions bootable but with the same results. Sector boot not found.

    James I will give yours a try but first I need to see if I can finish arch's installation. I did a chroot into Arch and I have no network using dhcp which I set up by following the installation guide. I need to at least have a DE to boot into and I have to figure out a lot of things before I can boot into it. I'm sure I'll be back to pester you guys with lots of questions.

    Thanks!

  4. Ok, I don't know what went wrong so maybe you can help. I put all my lilo.conf on my / partition for that distro. Then I installed Gag from boot CD. It detected all my partitions as ext2 instead of reiser. I chose my / partition for each distro and gave it a name like it asked, then chose one of those awful icons. But then when I went to boot it failed with an error like it couldn't find that drive or something (sorry I should have written it down). I don't understand how it knows to look for lilo.conf since there's nothing in the configuration to point it at that file. So, what am I missing?

  5. I use lilo.conf in Mandriva. When I installed arch I had it configure lilo.conf in /etc so I would see what it should look like. The problem is that arch uses sda8 for it's partition and mandriva won't recognize this because in mandriva it's hda8. I can't use hda8 cause that causes a kernel panic in Arch because it state "no file system, could not mount root". I'm kinda of stuck atm. I've tried googling but there doesn't seem to be a lot of info out there about arch.

  6. Debian Etch was a dream install. But like Mandriva it didn't like my wireless. It took me a while to get it configured and without Greg2's suggestion of changing channels in my router I probably never would have gotten it to work. The good thing (at least for me) is that you do a lot of command line stuff. So I was able to google for answers. The problem with trying to set it up and find solutions in Mandriva is that the posts I found said to use MCC and this didn't work for me. But it all worked out. Debian for the laptop, Mandriva and Gentoo on the desktop and after today I'll add Arch to that. Using different distros keeps it interesting for me.

  7. Well as you can tell by my sig I use Debian Etch and I have 2007.1 on another partition. But Kubuntu I could never try cause it wouldn't let me get past the partitioning. I'd use the drop down menu and select / and it would give me the error message that I needed a root partition. I went round and round a couple of times and quit. That was my one and only experience with Kubuntu.

  8. I didn't get very far in my install. I selected to just install the base system. The I go to install the packages

    Then it fails with the following error:

    error /mnt/var/lib/packman/current/kdb-1,12-1/desc No such file

    error: cannot resolve dependencies for "autoconf"

    "mawk" is not in the package set

    Package installion FAILED

  9. My install was very smooth also. I've had problems in the past with the install complaining it couldn't find packages but that didn't happen this time. I had to enlarge my partitions and as usual DiskDrake did a great job of it. I still have to do my upgrades but will do that today. One thing I have to do is install nano. For a distro that is supposed to be user friendly I don't understand why the default is vi. Even though I know how to use I still prefer nano.

  10. I installed slackware about 3 years ago when I was going through my distro ho'ing faze. If iirc correctly the install was fine although I had a problem with partitioning that I was able to work through. I didn't really mess with it after. I also had to install it in my linux certification course.

    I don't want to run cooker in Mandriva. I did that one time and it borked my system. But I do like iphitus's idea about being a tester for arch. I'll look at installing it and see what I come up with. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions everyone. It's greatly appreciated!

    Edit: iphitus, how would I get on the mailing list?

  11. Well being a developer is out of the question since I don't know anything about coding. But I did get some good suggestions.

    Here's a problem I just discovered. When I boot into Mandriva I'm getting a couple of error messages at boot. Something about ivp6 tunnering and ivp4 tunneling. It's not causing any problems but when I look at the logs most of them are empty. I need the exact message so I can research. Where else can I look?
