  1. That why I posted it...I new someone would have an answer. Thanks for the info. I will submit it. Thanks.
  2. ansariwn, Thanks for the info. I got Klaptop working perfectly now! The only dofference is that I am using 10.1 CE and the ACPI RPMs are of a different version. But it worked fine. Good job!
  3. Yes. I found it. It worked perfectly for me too. Quote below for thread purposes: Unless someone can explain differently, all the options above should be set and install by default with Klaptop. It could be one less thing to write about in the forums and maybe one more Windoze convert along the way. Any way this one is solved!
  4. When changing you ESSID using IWCONFIG, do not use the quotes (assuming). You should be able to set all the paremeters specific to your AP using the command. Please also read the Man pages. In case you don't know type MAN IWCONFIG in terminal. This will give you all the info you would want on IWCONFIG.
  5. On the tray to the right on the bottom, do you have an icon that looks like two plugs disconnected? If you do, right click and select "connect eth0" (or whatever device is there). It take a few seconds but you should see the icon change state and appear connected. For what ever reason, when 10.1 starts, it doesn't start connected by default and you have to manually start it. If this doesn't work, then in MCC remove all connections and reinstall and set up all parameters (keys, etc.) Then repeat the process.
  6. Not sure were to post this: I have discovered what I believe is a bug with Klaptop in 10.1 CE. I have tried to configure it to work properly but cannot get it to properly report the staus of the battery or plug. This is on a compaq presario laptop 1210US. The battery works fine, the application will not report a battery even exists. The power meters are also inop. There is a button to start the service, but it also has no effect. [moved from Hardware by spinynorman - but don't worry about it :)]
  7. Well, I was able to fix this issue myself. For those who wish to know please read on. I would first like to say I was suprised to see that I had 22 reads up to this point and no one replied and I would like to really know why. Is this subject that difficult or am I doing something wrong? To fix the issue all I did was remove both my network devices in MCC and add new in MCC. I selected wireless as type, and added my essid info and encryption key info and checked the link. It was the same as before, linked up. In conclusion, I would gather that there was a conflict between my NIC card which I do not use and my Orinoco Gold card, which I do use. Mandrake must of somehow automatically set up the NIC card (or I did it without knowing). Any way, it works and I hope this may help someone with this situation in the future.
  8. I am running a compaq presario laptop with and AMD Duron 850 processor with 10.0 CE download version(check sum verified), 384 meg of RAM, Orinoco gold card pcmia to a Linksys 4 port router version 4 connected to a cable modem both of which are set up as DHCP. Router handles the network computers DHCPs. I have configured the gold card as an Lucent wavelan (autodetected). Using the Orinoco_cs driver. I have tried to configure the card with no success with MCC. Installed wireless tools and configured via IWCONFIG. I added my ESSID, Nickname, and Encryp Key. It all took and I am linked up, 52/93. The problem is that I cannot connect to the internet or do anything with the internet or network. I can ping myself but cannot ping the router or other computers on the network. I do not see the computer through the router admin page either. I have monitored the network in MCC under monitoring connections and it only shows recieving files, I am not sending any. When I go to Internet connections, it say testing LAN and just hangs there. In monitoring connections, when I select connect to internet, it says it cannot and to check my settings in Internet connections. So I am lost and need help. Moved from Installation to networking by Ixthusdan
  9. Do you have another network device attached, such as a wireless device? If you do, Linux is trying to start it. I found that if I disable ModProbe then it will not hang. You may have to get it working first by using the std interface (Not GUI). Anyone else have additional info to get him in?
  10. Worked as advertised....Thanks for the help folks.
  11. I am trying to install the Nvida driver per instructions and the installer keeps telling me it appears that I have X running. Iknow startx will start it, How do I stop it? I have tryed key command ctr-alt-esc, Alt-esc, ctr-esc, running in non-fsb, and failsafe with the same error. I am running 10 community with KDE 3.0. Thanks.
  12. I tried the dutch mirror. Seems to be the only one that works. Thanks for the info.
  13. I have downloaded and installed Mandrake community 10.0. When I go to MCC and select Software management. Then select software update, Mandrake asks to contact Mandfraksoft website to get mirrors list. I say okay to this. I have tried all three mirrors in the US and got the same error that follows: Unable to add media retrieving failed; curl failed; exited with 9 or signal 0 retrieval of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed No hdlist file found for medium "Update_source" Poblem reading sythesisfile or medium "Update_source" Checksums are fine. Computer is online with network (Using it now) What gives
  14. Ditto.....Have not been able to resolve this!
  15. Yes, I agree, it does have something to do with USB. I really could care less about the extra keys. I just want to get it working. In USB view, it shows up red, which means it has no driver. The thing I don't understand is why it works sometimes and other times no usb stuff works. How can I have it save a certain setup or only use a specific driver once I figure out which ones work? Something is dynamically changing everytime I restart. Harddrake is off. If I turn it on, the system hangs at finding new hardware.
  16. Does anyone have a driver for compaq internet keyboards? I've googled and checked Linux-usb.org and cannot find one. This has been causing me intermittent crashes during start up
  17. If you search all the posts with "USB" key word. You will see this is a common problem. I still have it and cannot presently fix it. What I found is that if you hit escape as your booting before your keyboard locks up, you will see failed line items at the usb line and possibly insmode errors. What's weird with mine is some times it comes up fine and the next boot, its broke. Some times I can even start the box with the keyboard unplugged, the box will fully boot, plug the keyboard in and the keyboard will work. Doesn't work for the mouse. You may want to try this. I, like you, have tried all the suggestions above with no change. I'll follow this one closely to see if you get it resolved. \ I think this is a big killer for 9.2. If you can't get in the front door, how can you live there?
  18. Good points in the posts above. A key point to remember about the competition is that it is "preditory". Microsoft buys up the competition when it becomes a threat and incorporates the technology into their product. What a concept...lighten the load at the R&D level. From a buisness perspective, the only defense Microsoft has is its ability to try and sway consumers from Linux. Linux cannot be wholely owned by only one entity and that is its strength. In order for Linux to be properly ported to the average consumer, We need to create a product that is also easy to use for the computer novice. To be frank, if we ported it today, we would be killed with support calls. Even to the the advanced computer type, Linux can be a bit difficult. Any additional thoughts?
  19. An interesting story from the Poughkeepsie Journal: Sunday, January 25, 2004 Microsoft, IBM lock horns over software systems Gannett News Service Microsoft and IBM have squared off in dueling ad campaigns that underscore the rising threat Linux poses to Microsoft, the No. 1 software maker. Microsoft recently launched its first paid ad lambasting Linux, the computer operating system Microsoft executives have long derided. Such barbs have done little to slow Linux's swelling popularity. So Microsoft has begun enticing tech managers to visit a Web site brimming with surveys and testimonials illustrating how its Windows operating systems cost less to own over time than Linux. ''We think it is super important to clarify the facts with that audience,'' said Martin Taylor, Microsoft's head of platform strategies. Meanwhile, IBM, long a big Linux backer, is trying to captivate corporate chiefs with a campaign portraying Linux as the future. This month, it will spend 50 cents of every ad dollar on artsy TV spots, print ads and online ads to reinforce that message. While Microsoft woos tech managers reading trade publications, IBM will pitch high-concept messages to executives using venues such as the pro football playoffs and major business publications. ''IBM is saying to CEOs, 'Buy Linux and save your company,' '' said Linux consultant Bruce Perens. ''Microsoft is saying to technical users, 'Buy Windows and save your job.' '' Practicing what it preaches, IBM says it is studying the feasibility of widely distributing Linux desktop PC programs to its own employees. It is vital for Microsoft to keep Linux in check. Its future hinges on expanding sales of cutting-edge Windows server software designed to drive richer corporate networks accessed by Windows desktop PCs. But Linux, little more than a hobbyist pastime a decade ago, increasingly stands in Microsoft's way. Based on open source code that is continually improved by volunteer programmers worldwide, Linux has emerged the past two years as the fastest-growing server software. It has won converts among government and education users reluctant to rely on a single software supplier. Linux's momentum has spiked: - In Asia: Database supplier Oracle recently helped broker a joint venture between China's Red Flag Software and Japan's Miracle Linux to co-market a Linux server operating system, dubbed Asianux, for sale in Japan, China, South Korea and Taiwan. - On the desktop: Sun Microsystems and Novell are ramping up Linux-based desktop PCs and basic programs to offer as an alternative to Microsoft's Windows desktop PC and Office suite. - With cost-conscious customers: The Israeli government recently suspended Microsoft license upgrades, and it is reviewing Linux proposals from IBM and Sun. The city of Austin, Texas, and Massachusetts likewise are reviewing Linux as a cheaper, more flexible alternative to upgrading their Microsoft software.
  20. The issue is that when I shutdown the machine, the machine does not self power off. I apologize if I wasn't clear in the previous posts. I have to manually hit the power but once I hear the hard drive park. What I would like it to do is; once I hit "shutdown the computer", I can walk away knowing I am done and not have to wait for the little "ching" from the hard drive to know when its done doing its thing. The observations I have made through this ordeal just don't make sense to me. The machine did shut down in a past installation.(MDL9.2) The BIOS says Power management disabled. cannot enable. When I boot to XP and shut down, it does. I am pretty stubborn with things like this in computers. I cannot let it go. I hate when something does not work exactly as advertised and get obsessed with finding the answer so people who come after will not suffer the same fate. I notice on the postings, that a lot of users have the same symptoms, however, the solution is rarely the same in each instance. I curious to know why that is and come up with a common fix one way or another. Anyway...enough of my rant. Any and all help would be appreciated.
  21. Okay...Looks like it is not Linux, see code below Jan 27 17:16:44 localhost kernel: apm: BIOS not found. I confirmed on my AMI BIOS screen during boot it shows Power Management: Disabled. Now.. I have look through my BIOS and have changed about everything with no affect. Question: Why does the system shut down in XP and not Linux when BIOS is in same state? I don't expect any one to answer that... Post closed...Thanks for the help and thought processes
  22. Man..this thing really has me wigged I have looked in the services and noticed that APIC APMD ACPI are all loaded. I cannot start them. From the previous posts I have done, I still cannot turn it on. It works in XP (dual boot). It used to work in MDL about 4 installations ago. The only thing I can think of is that it did not compile in the kernel for some reason. Being fairly new....should I attempt the next kernel up to see if that resolves my Issue? Any pointers? I don't want to reinstall again. I believe I am gaining valuable knowledge through this process and would like to continue on. I would love to see this OS remove Microshaft from running!!
  23. BVC, I was able to reproduce the error from above; [root@localhost thor]# modprobe apm modprobe: Can't locate module apm [root@localhost thor]# [root@localhost thor]# /sbin/modprobe apm modprobe: Can't locate module apm [root@localhost thor]# I doesn't appear the module is loaded. Would you please help with this?
  24. BVC, For some reason I cannot get PS/2 Preph's to work on this. I checked BIOS. I have plugged them in and now effect. They don't even light up. What I did do is change to my keyboard from the compaq internet keyboard to a Microshaft natural USB. Problem with Keyboard and mouse gone. I think it may be the driver. Should I just use a generic one? Unfortunatly I cannot keep this keyboard, so I have to fix the problem. The power down problem still remains. I found through services thar ACPI was not loaded via RPM. I loaded it. I enable ACPI through the MCC boot option. There is also an option to "forcw no APIC" That is not enabled. What is it? Should I diable it? I'll try any way to see if there is any change. I have even changed the /etc/lilo.config Append to APM=on. Ineach LILO option and ran LILO to write changes. No change in power down state. I'm lost. Anything I can post here to help?
  25. BVC, I have tried everthing in your reply to no avail. I read around on the APMD issue and I found a post that said the kernel may not have been configured with APM. I forget which conmand I typed, but it said something to the affect of "Service not supported by kernel" How do i fix this?
