Zac - from what I've seen in your very few posts here to date - you'll NEVER be "one of them". It doesn't matter how long you've been working with computers - there's no stigma in asking for help. I've been in computing for 25 years, running small to large networks on various operating systems - and I learn something new every day. The quickest way to learn is often just to ask. After a while, hopefully, you may start to give help too. The trick is asking in the right place... For help with Mandriva, imho, you've certainly found the right place... ;)

I just read through this thread - 4 people so far have offered you help, and, as far as I can see none of them has "acted like you're an idiot". If you were a foreigner visiting a country, and you asked for directions, and the guy who gave them to you said: "Left at the highway, carry on for 20 miles, but don't stop and swim in the river, even if it looks lovely - it's full of crocodiles" Assuming you already knew there were crocodiles in the river - is he treating you like an idiot, or just giving you the best advice he can, because he's not sure if you know anything about the area ?

Here's a page which indicates that sbp2 could be relevant for scanner detection: Epson Scanner Configuration So, you never know... Worth a try, in my opinion. Here's the Mandriva Bug

John, this may not help - because I don't even know if the sbp2 module is involved in talking to firewire scanners - however, there is a bug filed where external firewire hard drives are not detected until sbp2 is loaded, and sbp2 is not loaded at setup time. I had to force my 2008.0 install to load sbp2 at boot time in order to access my external firewire hdd. If you look through the output of lsmod|more and see if sbp2 is loaded, or, easier: lsmod|grep sbp2 which will return nothing if sbp2 is not loaded then if it isn't, try to modprobe sbp2 then try to detect your scanner again. Like I said, it may not be relevant, but it's a 2 minute job to try it. If it works, I made the system load sbp2 at each boot by adding the single term sbp2 on a new line, on its own at the end of the file: /etc/modprobe.preload

In fact, after a little thought I can't see how you could ever have 2 screens at different resolutions showing the same thing. By definition, the higher resolution screen can fit more "stuff" on it than the smaller resolution screen can display (without scrolling). Say you open a 1024 x 768 pic on a 1024 x 768 screen - it will fit. But try and display it on 800 x 600 and it won't (without resizing) So 2 screens at different resolutions can't be clones and fully visible. Unless I'm having a mad moment :unsure:

Yes it is Yes, but I prefer it at 1024 x 768 I'm not sure - but if it is I'm afraid I can't tell you how :mellow: Someone else might know if you can use this trick to get the 2 screens at different resolutions - I played around with my Xorg.conf just before posting this, but everything I tried left both screens the same size, sometimes with the mouse scrolling the screen around when the desktop was bigger than the monitor. On the page I linked to he has 2 resolutions available and switches between them using xrandr depending on which screen he wants to look at. He says: He also goes on to talk about merging - using both screens as "viewports" to the same desktop, but that all sounded too complex for me. I was just happy to get the refresh rate issue solved - it had really been annoying looking at a 60Hz CRT.

I posted this over at the Mandriva forum, but I thought it was interesting enough to pop it on here too: Here's a great tutorial on using the mergefb option in xorg to handle dual displays: http://ozlabs.org/~jk/docs/mergefb/ I have an external monitor hooked to my laptop via the VGA port, and I'd been struggling to get X to use anything other than a horrible 60 Hz to drive it. Once I followed the steps on the linked page, it just worked fine at a "lovely" 85 Hz - no flicker - no more headaches !!! Because I only wanted the same resolution on the lcd and the monitor, and I wasn't interested in scrolling around multiple desktops, I changed the config from the linked page a little bit - and here's what works like a charm for me now: The particular trick is duplicating your Device section with the same BusID in both sections (you can get the ID from lspci), and setting up 2 monitor sections - 1 for lcd, 1 for monitor. As you'll see, in MetaModes I've forced both displays to 1024x768 - but you don't have to do that (I played around with the dual desktop overlapping etc.., and it works really well - I just didn't use it in the end) - it was just the solution to my refresh rate problem. To elaborate on aRTee's point: You do. (but obviously only right now, for a short period, until the two diverge again) I did exactly that on Saturday, and after a few minor tweaks, 2008.0 looks excellent. The ftp install was smooth, and quick (3 hours over ADSL). I used this mirror: ftp://ftp.sunet.se//pub/Linux/distributio...x/devel/cooker/ as you can see, that mirror was pretty quick, and I'm in Australia too I've also found the usc.edu mirrors pretty quick from here. edit: Just for clarity (with apologies to those who already know this): Using cooker this way is unsupported, and runs the risk cooker won't match 2008 official at the time you do it. The correct way to do an official ftp install, would be to wait until the mirrors have the official 2008.0 tree, and use boot.iso from there. If you do go the "unofficial" cooker route, you need to be sure to change your sources in rpmdrake (software manager) as soon as 2008.0 sources are available - or you'll keep updating to latest cooker. edited to make clearer for new users reading this thread.

Anyone still following this thread should read the corresponding thread in the Mandriva Forum : Here... Basically, the good folks at Mandriva provided a test iso which solves the problem with the ide drivers, so the bug in RC2 will be fixed in Final :D Splendid service - and super quick response. We should be as quick to congratulate them when they do good stuff, as we are to criticise them at other times... (IMO) ;)

Certainly, as I just discovered. But I wouldn't have liked to have gone in there unprepared or with a silly non-bug. They'd have eaten me alive :huh: A high level of understanding of what you are reporting, some prior research, thorough reporting of your bug, and the willingness to be quickly referred to something you missed, and should have seen, would seem essential prerequisites for mixing with that crowd. That said, they were gentle with me, despite this bug being fixed in Cooker. In my defence - I couldn't have known it was fixed since I was downloading the latest version of "One" as a test for 2008 on my hardware. Downloading and installing the latest Cooker to see if I should download and install 2008 when it goes "live" is a bit more time consuming for a lazy old ***** like me :P

Ok - it's Bug Number 34372 edit: Which turned out to be a "resolved duplicate" - fixed in cooker already - so "It'll be alright on the night" The responses in Bugzilla were lightning fast - very impressive...

Me too :D If my processor ran at the speed cpuinfo says it does (4.45 GHz), my fan would be on full time, and my temperature sky-high. This isn't the case, it doesn't, and the info I can get from /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_cur_freq (2.25 GHz) is correct The funny thing is, that in my case, cpuinfo was correct for ages, and I used to use it in a Superkaramba widget on my desktop. Then one day it was just wrong, and has been ever since. No idea what caused it, couldn't work out why it changed - but I just changed my desktop widget to read from cpuinfo_cur_freq and that's always been accurate.

I agree I've had experience of /proc/cpuinfo just being "dead-wrong" See this post: /proc/cpuinfo weirdness...

Thanks - I'm actually in the process of burning a new CD. Just want to be sure that it's a real bug, and not a bad burn before I report it. md5sum of the iso was ok - but when I tried to md5sum the CD I got a couple of read errors... ... I'll report back

Hello I posted this on Mandriva forum too - I'm hoping someone here might know the answer... I'm looking at installing 2008, so I downloaded the "One" live iso to try it out on my hardware. It takes an age to boot, largely due to some sort of loop it gets into trying to configure the DVD Writer it is running from. (Toshiba ODD-DVD SD-R6252 on a Compaq Presario 2500 laptop - ALI M5229 IDE Controller) It basically sits there saying ata2.00: exception Emask 0x0 ... frozen ata2.00: cmd ... ...(timeout) ata2: soft resetting port ata2.00: configured for MWDMA2 ata2: EH complete a few times, then the same thing but MWDMA1 for a while... I'm assuming that this is because the new libata drivers are having a problem with this drive, negotiating DMA The whole boot process takes about 15 minutes (2007.1 live iso boots in 2 minutes, tops, without these errors) I've tried giving boot parameters: live combined_mode=ide live combined_mode=libata live libata.atapi_enabled=0 live libata.atapi_enabled=1 in various combinations. I've also tried noapic, nolapic, acpi=off and even ide=nodma None of these parameters seem to help at all. Questions: Is there any way to force libata new stuff not to be used at boot ? Will this problem go away with a proper install ? (ie Is it a peculiarity of the "live" iso) 3.10.2007: edited to change title to [sOLVED]
