I'm not sure how to do this via the GUI, but if you use urpmi through the command line --no-clean will keep it from cleaning out the cache. This way, it will store the rpm's that get downloaded for the session (in case you lose connection). Although, I thought urpmi only cleans up after a successful install.

you may need to make custom modelines for your monitor - do you know the model? also, yes, please post your xorg.conf - it'll make it easier to show you what, if anything, you should change.

I don't know if you guys at Mandriva considered this (it seems a bit obvious to me), but couldn't this issue be easily avoided if, when doing an upgrade like this (or heck, even a big update - say a new DE version), Mandriva would crap out if any files don't get downloaded? Maybe give the user some feedback and a question on whether or not to continue? Or does it already do that and this is another issue? (don't mean to offend - if it works this way, or if you guys already thought about it, my bad! :) )

as an FYI, you can use this method with the iso on an internal disk also - simply point grub to the right place. Of course, you will need to be sure not to format the partition that the iso is on.

seems to me this might be useful. though, i'm not sure how you would reference the iso if it were on a Windows drive (or if you can - not sure grub can read NTFS). This will work for you silver. ilia, you could try making a small temp ext2 partition (i think there are free windows tools for this) to hold the dvd iso for installation - that's just one idea. (also, steve uses an external drive, but you can use an internal as long as you don't format that partition)

Verizon FiOS ranges from $42/mo. (10Mbps) to $140 (50Mbps). I'm currently paying $42/mo. for cable internet (12Mbps) - so prices are similar here. Unfortunately FiOS isn't available in my apartment complex. I don't care how many wires, but only having one bill (not to mention possible discounts of you combine all 3) is certainly nice.

I would look at KDE4 as the culprit here. I noticed, even on my fairly beefed system (NVIDIA 8800GTX 768MB RAM vid card) KDE4 + 3d desktop = slowness. KDE3 or GNOME, no problem. Again, KDE4 issues. You probably just need to set up the keys. I forget what the tool for this is in Mandriva, but there should be something in the Control Center. I believe with 3d desktops it's less about memory and more about GPU power. Upgrading your vid card (I would go with an nvidia) might improve perfomance, but as noted, I experience slowdown even with a decent vid card - again, I'd put the blame on the maturity of KDE4. It's functional and they have a lot of the pieces there, but it still could use some optimization and general polish.

how about the output of lsmod? in terminal, aumix is probably a better option than kmix. kmix may not be installed if you didn't select kde stuff (since you're using gnome).

In the U.S., some phone providers are starting to run fibre (Verizon has it's FiOS, for example) to the house - they use it not only for internet, but also for phone (it's a way to get into the VOIP market) and TV (to take on the big cable companies). Basically, telephone companies and cable companies are swallowing services whole (sorry, that was a bit of a tangent).

at console prompt: cd /home/william/Documents insert the USB drive. you may need to manually mount it, so you'll have to know what /dev/sdXX it is. fdisk -l should help as ian suggested. then simply copy the files, i.e.: cp /home/william/Documents/*.odt /path/to/pendrive/

i know this reply is a bit late, but that's a pretty generic error. could be caused by anything from bad permissions to...well, several other things.

the 3g network might be compacting your downloads, so the sig may not match. that's just a guess, however - it's possible the 3g just has data corruption issues (not usually noticeable in normal browsing, but when downloading binary files - yeah).

add the NFS share to /etc/fstab and set your UID and GUID in there. be sure to use the noauto option, so it doesn't try to mount it on boot (before the network is up).

That's unfortunate. Isn't speed supposed to be a pro for solid state? Or is it just a bad drive choice (i.e. this specific model bites)?

I don't think anyone makes a list of that. Chances are, from the last beta, not much has changed (usually last beta becomes release - may be a few small fixes, though).

I imagine "Linpus Lite" has been thoroughly optimized for the hardware. though the spec's don't seem to be anything most linux distro's couldn't run well on.

I'm going to bet you can safely delete the files in /usr/share/doc/clamav/test - probably even the whole test directory. No more false-positives :) (and clamav should continue to function).

Sorry, I'm not psychic, and when I see excessive question punctuation and bold letters I assume "upset mode" (it's similar to ALL CAPS).
