actually..if you left the directory which you built fluxspace in, you would just do make uninstall in that directory. atleast..that's how I undersatnd it... if you deleted that directory (like I always do) then you just have to use the "find and delete" method :) but...i'm not sure...?

think: college student, makes maybe $120 every two weeks-if that. buys food, pays for gas. has cell phone bill. anything more than $20 is expensive

nv driver=no good i tried lower resolutions, but same issue. it seems that things get distorted when the screen is stretched to fit the size of the monitor-that's all I can figure out. issue still remains, because if I can get 1600x1200 working that resolution should be the right size, and things wouldn't get distorted......

the 20 gig drive is not THAT old :-P (ok...maybe 2 years...) in fact, I think both my 40 and 20 gig run at 7200 RPMs, I'd have to double check that.

quick question to see where you're at: Did you install the rpm's and modify the file while the X-server was still running? if so, that is your problem(most likely). The X-server has to be shutdown whenever you install the RPM's and modify the file. (btw-don't apologize, if we didn't want to help, we wouldn't be here.)

I use Mandrake on my personal system. This is a work system, and I have been instructed to use RH 8.0-it is purely for testing purposes. I'm not even permitted to connect into the network when in Linux. Ok :) I'm not sure the NV driver will work correctly. I will give it a try, but if I remember, it causes the screen to go haywire (as mentioned in the link you provided to me).

I'm glad someone took the initiative to try this. Looks like that school is quite happy with the change. Take a look at Figure 3, the picture of KTouch. The one word is of particular interest....

it should be ~/.waimea/styles not .waimearc (that's the file, not the dir :) ) i'm sure that was just a typo up above, but just thought I'd mention it. also make sure that in your .waimearc file you have the styles dir set to ~/.waimea/styles/ also: what are you using to startup programs when you login? are you coming from a console, and putting them in .xinitrc, or coming from a graphical login and using something else?

the best thing would be to remove (manually) the original files, before you redo it. but even then, what i suggested still might not work-it's just a guess. from my experience, as long as nothing is depending on something you installed, it's not a big deal to delete it. and since fluxspace isn't depended on by any other programs, it should be a simple thing to remove it.

i have to agree with cannonfodder, the layout is nice, and colors are easy on the eyes. it's not flashy.

that's basically a default look in all of the styles i've used. not many _don't_ use it, as it looks so damn cool... question: i don't use virtual desktops much, so i figured how to only have one. but my question is, where can i modify the extended desktop size? I think mine is at 1x6 or something...i can go 2 screens more to the right. and there is a whole set of 3 other screens if i take my mouse down to the bottom. I wouldn't mind keeping them, but i tire of getting too close to an edge and switching to the next desktop. maybe if there was a way for the mouse to "pause" on the edge? so that I have to really intend to go to the next desktop? hopefully you know what i mean.

gah! spend more money, are you mad? I'm not sure what exactly your're talking about here, but what do you mean by "fast"? RPM's? DMA?

although the monitor works when i set it to 1600x1200, @16bpp or @32bpp, it still does not appear to be _true_ 1600x1200. regardless of the bpp. It's still taking the 1400x1050 and scaling it to look like 1600x1200. I took a look at my XF86Config (oddly enough, there's no -4 file, just the regular file) and in the monitor section all the lines start w/1400x1050, if i remember correctly. there are no 1600x1200 lines tho. I was going to check and make sure it was using XFree86 4, but I haven't gotten around to that.

i might leave about 5-10 gigs open on the second drive to use for playing around with beta's or other distro's, maybe. (just thought about this because i saw the post about 9.1 beta 1)

i'll have to take a look at the whole file when i get home, that doesn't look wrong but who knows. but, before we get that far, install the iptables RPMs.

AH! is that....is that...a red hat 8.0 desktop i see? NOOOOO!!
-
what are you using to display the icons? idesk? or something else? i was attempting to use idesk, but it was being qwerky and not doing the icon transparency right. and whats the kinda funny bug? i haven't found it...

oh...beta's are so much fun..w00t! go mandrake, go mandrake, go go go mandrake....... erm, right, that was a bit too "happy". anyways...

They killed Kenny ! you bastards!!

open up /etc/firestarter/firewall.sh in your favorite editor, find line 139, and post that line up here. though i had no problems getting firestarted working on my MDK9.0 box...but...you never know.

i will be using it for a variety of tasks. games, multimedia (image creation, possibly playing around with making songs if i can find a good program for that), mp3's (need my music), and any of the various tasks of a college student. also, probably a bit of programming here and there. basically, just about anything you can think up, i will probably do at some point and time.

so let me make sure i understand this... you go into /dev, and there are no ttyS*'s? because that is extremely odd...I would try to figure out what's up with that before moving on to getting the palm working.

i'm going to guess that the problem is that by default this fluxspace.py file is going into /usr/local/lib instead of /usr/lib/ i forget, does fluxspace have a ./configure? if so..try the following instead of just ./configure: ./configure --prefix=/usr try that, and do make and make install. might make a difference? i would try it myself, but i'm at work, and my RH 8.0 box can't even get as far as Mandrake in the compile. it spits out some other error, i don't feel like trying to fix it.

thanks for the info ndeb. i had gone to linux-laptop.net when i first installed onto this system, but I must have missed that one or not payed attention enough to pick up on the resolution issue.

I'm planning on going completely Linux this weekend-killing my XP drive. Here's the deal: I have a total of 60gb, a 40gb HD and a 20gb HD. I'm trying to decide how to split it up for my Linux system. Looking for other peoples suggestions on the setup, anyone? keep in mind: while primarily a desktop/one user system, I will also be running a mail server (qmail) and web server (apache) for my domain.
