  1. The data sheet seems to say it's a MIPS architecture.
  2. While I understand your point, it's not a point I personally care about. I don't think Linux needs to have mass acceptance - I'm fine with the way it is. People can use whatever OS they like, or does the job for them (I spend about 80% of my time on OS X). All these things you've mentioned can be tested out on relatively inexpensive hardware, save for driver support (and we know how driver support happens in Linux - someone donates hardware or specs to a dev, or the dev has the hardware for personal use). To do any testing of CMYK support, you really need to have a high quality printer, which can range into the thousands. Don't get me wrong, if the GIMP dev's get CMYK support in there I'm all for it, but until then I'll leave 'em to do their thing. It's worked out so far...considering the only real criticism of GIMP features (ignoring UI complaints - just straight abilities) is the lack of CMYK, I think that's a good sign ;)
  3. You never know... Sometimes I don't think before I post. It's a bad habit...
  4. Yes, but it doesn't matter if you care. The fact is they do, and GIMP wasn't originally created to be aimed at professionals - it was aimed at the hobbyist Linux user. You're "many other people" are a small portion of GIMP's audience, really. GIMP was never intended as a competitor/replacement for Photoshop - people have made it out to be. You may not blame them, but you are certainly criticizing them for it. Did you read the link I posted? Properly testing CMYK support is NOT CHEAP. Maybe if someone is so darned keen about GIMP having CMYK support, they'll be kind enough to donate the necessary hardware for them to test it on. CMYK support = time + money for hardware GIMP = time, but no income ....
  5. I would suggest getting a more recent release of Mandriva. 8.1 is really, really, really, really old. In fact, it may not even install/work from USB.
  6. CMYK isn't very useful in the computer world, as almost everything displaying the images is RGB-based. Professional printing/photography, yes, but the computer world - not so much. There's a semi-decent post on this issue from a Scribus developer here.
  7. It's a pretty common warning - in most circumstances it can be safely ignored.
  8. sean: please do not double post problems. one problem = one thread. mod or admin: please close this topic: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=59834
  9. discussion of this is here: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=59944
  10. Talk to the developers of the application in question. The ability is there, but it's up to the developers of the application to implement it.
  11. enable 3d effects and then post the contents of your xorg :) (sorry, I should have clarified that)

    World Of Warcraft

It's mostly stuff like bloom and other things that smooth the edges of objects, IIRC. I'll have to load up WoW when I get home and see.
  13. there haven't been any, really. all i can say is keep an eye on icculus.org - as that's who's porting it.

    World Of Warcraft

There are a few reasons for that (don't get me started on Vista!), but one thing is that in Linux - no matter what you use - you don't get a lot of the extra graphics stuff (shaders, basically). At least, the last time I set it up I couldn't turn on some of the eye candy. That helps improve performance a good bit.
  15. please post the contents of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
  16. I would suggest against installing to a CF card for a server.
  17. please let us know what the last thing you see on the screen when you try to boot the DVD is. thanks :)
  18. Instead of going to the custom partition screen, you should be presented with an option to use the entire second disk (most likely called sdb - DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT mess with sda - that is where Ubuntu is). This is probably the "easiest" option. If you can give us a list of the options you see aside from the custom partition option, we should be able to tell you which one is a good fit for your setup - and help you avoid the need to custom partition the drive. as long as none of the partitions you create reference sda (i.e. /dev/sda1) your Ubuntu install should be safe.
  19. crappy linux distro buys crappy linux distro. wooo!
  20. They had a few deals like this. Not sure what the current status of them is, though. adamw might know?
  21. viking: it might be a good idea to post your problem in the appropriate forum, someone might help you there. unless you already posted it (i didn't check, too lazy) then nevermind :)
  22. somehow i've been lucky. most bugs i've come across were usually already reported (and I'd just add my experience to validate) or were reported and fixed. though I did find one in opera 9.5 tonight that I need to check on: I tried to open the Java Console (two times, once on a site, once on just the "speed dial" page) and it beach-balled (for over an hour the first time).
  23. iphitus is a long standing member of this forum. he has contributed much to the linux world, including being on the arch linux team. you may find his post abrasive, but his tone comes from the point of view of a developer who has seen too many people complain about bugs in forums but never filing a bug report. perhaps he is a bit jaded, nonetheless, i believe his intent was to help, despite his tone.
  24. Yeah, not really your fault, theme creators fault. Yeah...I've never had to change the color of a drop down box via CSS before...you might have to put it inside a span with an id and then add the css, etc. dunno if that makes sense...i'll toss an example together if you need it.
