  1. Although I've been a linux user for some 3 years or so, and still have problems installing programs, I too thought like you. Why base a distro on RPM and not Debian? But the facts don't bear out my opinions. RPMs are here to stay. Yum, Apt-Get and Up2date make installing RPMs easier. They don't take care of all the problems associated with RPMs but they do smooth the road quite a bit. Since installing and usiing Fedora, my expereance in that area has helped in understanding what RPMs are all about. Not that I completely understand it. With my Fedora Core 1, I use apt-get, Yum and Up2date to look for and install programs. Mandrake's UPPMI is a like program that makes working with Linux less of a headache. Linux has a long way to go to match the ease of installing a Windows based program. But things are looking up as far as I'm concerned.
  2. Anna: Congrats! You give me hope. You see I'm 56. But I think my brain has solidified over the years. But I keep trying. And yes you are correct...Linux is fun. Keep up the good work. Keep us up to date on your adventure. By the way, how can I get that wallpaper?

    SBC Yahoo

Does anyone use SBC Yahoo DSL service? I do and just recently, last week, changes took place that prevent me from accessing their news page using Mozilla. Thank God I can still read my email. I go to the Yahoo site, click the "My Personalize". The sign on page is next. That should take me to my 'news page'. From there I can read the latest news and of course read my email. I find I can no longer do this. Instead I get an error message. Home - My Account - Help Browser Upgrade Required To access the SBC Yahoo! DSL portal you need to use Internet Explorer 5 or higher or Netscape Navigator 6.2 or higher. * To upgrade Internet Explorer, follow this link. * To upgrade Netscape Navigator, follow this link. Nothing I do takes me to my personalized page. Like I said before, I can still receive and sent email if I go directly to the email from the main Yahoo page. But no luck accessing the "Personalized" page. I get the same results using Opera, Epiphany, or Galeon. The only success I have is with Konqueror. But even that is not without problems. Comparing the results using IE, the page rendered is missing much. Plus I also get an error message too. The KDE Crash Handler The application unknown (nspluginviewer) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV) I sent an email to the tech support and received a reply stateing Flash is needed with this new upgrade of the site. I have Flash installed in Mozilla so I don't understand. Anyone have an explaination? Has anyone else had these same problems and if so, how do you address them? Thanks.
  4. Not being overly familiar with this, could you break it down so us dullards can understand? So, I go to Kate or one of any editors and ....? Help me out. I too got the same error message when I added a stand-alone burner. Not only that but my internal CD would not play CDs. I finally had to disconnect my UBS burner in order to use the CD. Sure would like to have both. Thanks.
  5. Hot Dammit! It worked. I downloaded a tar.gz file and didn't know if I had to do something else to it. But I didn't. Using you instructions it was no sweat. Thanks.
  6. chris z, I'm using the rpm from the forum and you're correct, it insatlled without any error messages. But when I test it out, Jave still does not work. What next? Do I have to point Jave to my browsers? If so, how do I go about doing that? How do I find out where my plugin fold is? As root I do a 'whereis java' and this is the results... [root@localhost smartjak]# whereis java java: /usr/bin/java /etc/java /usr/share/man/man1/java.1.bz2 Did the same for Mozilla: [root@localhost smartjak]# whereis mozilla mozilla: /usr/bin/mozilla /usr/lib/mozilla /usr/share/man/man1/mozilla.1.bz2 Also, while I don't use Konqueror very much I'd still like Jave to work with it. The same with Opera and Epiphany. Is that possible? Help. Thanks.
  7. bvc, could you do me a favor and take this oldster by the hand? I've donwload a theme to my tmp folder and then ??? How do I go about using the method you described to install new themes for my MDK 9.2 Gnome? Please take it easy on me. I'm a '60 child and all the drugs and free sex have taken it's toll on me. And it doesn't help that the drugs now are for ailment and the sex is infrequent. :D
  8. I've not had any success adding Java to any of my browsers. I downloaded the Java rpm from the suggested site ( ftp://mandrake-forum.org/pub/Misc ) and used URPMI to install. In the process of installing URPMI ask about some missing files and if I wanted to download them. Of course I said yes. But I received an error message that stopped my from going further. I tried once before with the rpm from the Sun site and it hosed up my system so when I received an error message ( I think is an error message ) I stopped the installation. So, what's the next step. Any pointers? I'd really like to have Java installed in my browsers. Thanks. Error message: This message when asking about missing libs, files, etc... Is this OK?
