  1. Here is a guide to FTP-install that worked for me.
  2. I've been a user of Thunderbird for a good while, so when I now installed MDK10 and got Thunderbird via URPMI and it didn't work... well, that is kind of an emergency. When I start Thunderbird from the menu, the screen flickers for a second, then nothing... same if I try to start it from a console. I've tried both in Gnome and KDE, same thing. Don't have any other problems with other apps. I've tried installing Thunderbird 0.5 via URPMI, and tried downloading Thunderbird 0.6 from Mozilla, unpacking and running. Same problem. I need to see my old mail If I can't get thunderbird to work... is it possible to import the mail into, say, Evolution?
  3. With my 10.0 Official and Gnome it pops up on the desktop when I plug it in. Haven't configured a thing... EDIT: Sorry, forget my post, I thought you guys where talking about USB "Thumb-drives"... guess I should read more carefully before posting next time
  4. Firefox and 10. Community Edition was not friends on my PC. After surfing 5 minutes the hole kanudle froze as if it was Windows. But now on my 10.0 Official Community Download Edition (or whatever they call it now...) Firefox runs like a charm. I love it :woops: Anyone know if there is a way of installing extensions without loggin out and in as root?
  5. Thanks. It gave me a hint and then I thought a little bit for myself... The solution was to remove the original Update Source, and add this one instead: ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Man...ates/10.0/RPMS/
  6. Hi. I just installed MDK 10 Official, Download Edition, Community or whatever they call it now... from the boot-CD via FTP. The install went ok, I've set it up perfectly, all my favorite apps was available through the standard URPMI-sources that came with the install, so now I just have one problem... I forgot to install the kernel-source, and now when I try it now, I just get this message: kernel-source-2.6.3-9mdk.i586 (unsatisfied rpmlib(CompressedFileNames) <= 3.0.4-1) Any clues?
  7. This is a bit wrong... the right path is /pub/linux/distributions/Mandrakelinux/official/10.0/i586/images Just drop the/unix... I'm installing as we speak, thanks for a great howto, Ciinien
  8. On my computer that don't have Windows on, I've used this page to get the most common TrueType fonts... hope it helps! EDIT: On my freshly installed MDK 10CE on a Dual Boot, I can't seem to find the same import-function as I had on MDK 9.x... is it removed, moved or am I just blind?
  9. Thanks guys, by some reason it just worked after an restart... Thanks Adrianovaroli for the link, are downloading hundreds of updates now :D ...and thanks bvc for all the ftp's!
  10. Hi all you Mandrake geniuses! Main issue: I've installed MDK 10ce on my Shuttle and today I installed the Nvidia drivers. The installation went very well and I edited the XF86Config-4 file to "nvidia", but when I then tried to start X, I got this message: When I log in as root it works fine, and the driver works. I also tried to create a new user, but the same message comes when I use startx. Anyone know what to do? Issue 2: None of the mirrors work for update, I've added one mirror that I got a tip on, but I feel that it doesn't have all the updates I need, because it just contained 70MB of updates... anyone got any good mirrors I should use? Issue 3: Anyone want to list good sites I can add as URPMI-sources? Thanks for all help!
  11. Maybe I'm really stupid here... just installed 10.0 looks great, all my HW worked "out of the box", but I cannot get any update lists from any of the standard mirrors, do I need to manually use these mirrors that you guys are refereing to here? BTW: Maybe this is a bit off-topic, but do you have links to any good URPMI sources for software for 10.0? I'm thinking espesially about Firefox and aMSN here... I hate tarball installs (yeah, I'm a n00b)

    Gimp 2

I installed Gimp 2 on my wintendo lappy at work... looks very good! Anyone know if it's easy to install on MDK 10CE?
  13. Dude's and dudettes! I'll be receiving some cool "modding" stuff for my Shuttle SN41G2 with the infamous nForce2 chipset tomorrow, will be using heavy tools on it for a couple of days, and then install Windows XP (need it for work) and Mandrake 10CE on separate disks in full harmony using dual boot... so my question is: GRUB or LILO? I used GRUB under 9.1 and LILO under 9.2, but don't really see the big difference!?
  14. Well, MandrakeSoft said this quite clear I think. They say that the official release will be in May. Thus I think it's quite clear that CE is just a more slick name for Release Candidate X. And I'm fine with that, if Mandrake gives me a free OS, I'm willing to do some final bug-testing for them!
  15. I downloaded from the Norwegian mirror yesterday (not Bittorent, normal FTP-mirror), had around 100KB in avarage B)
  16. It's a Shuttle XPC that I ripped out of a Shuttle commercial, mine is a SN41G2, but I think this one is a different model... no matter it looks 99% the same. Then I stole a tux from this site and put some text under. Made in GIMP :)
  17. Downloaded the three ISO's yesterday and burned them out. Are looking forward to play with them this weekend :-)
  18. Yes, I think I've read this somewhere too... So that would mean that Nvidia Nforce2 chipset's should work "out of the box" !? ...and that Nvidia-drivers is not included in the Community release of MDK just means the Geforce drivers to get 3D graphics!?
  19. Great work aRTee Nice reading before my own install at easter... anyone tried 10CE with Nvidia Geforce and/or Nvidia Nforce2 ? I have this horrible combination on my Shuttle, and went through hell to get it working on 9.2. Anyone know if it's smoother now with the new kernel and all?
  20. I'm seriously considering becoming a clubmember to get my hands on 10, but I feel Silver membership is overkill for me. Then I saw that Silver members get a different version with commercial products. What puzzled me was that Nvidia drivers where listed as commercial product. Does that mean that with the Download Edition for standard members, and later everyone, I still have to install Nvidia drivers manually? Anyone with Nforce2 chipset? With MDK 9.2 I struggled for days getting my Nforce2 online... don't feel like going through that again.
  21. On my standard build Mandrake 9.2 with Opera 7.23 I surf WAY much faster than with XP and Opera 7.23. Mozilla 1.4 and Firefox in Linux go just as fast as any other browser on XP, but Flash is very slow on Mozilla/Firefox, works fine in Opera though.
  22. This laptop would be for home use, since I always will have a Wintendo laptop through work, so my important specs would be: - 15' or 17' inch screen (17' if I can afford it) with at least 1280 resolution. - Buildt in WiFi (I have a WiFi net at home) - Good batterytime, possebility to drop floppy and have double batteries. - A couple of USB2 ports and a firewire. - Thouchpad and nav-stick (Dell-style) so I can choose what to use if I don't have a mouse connected. - OK stereospeakers like the new ones from Toshiba Satelite. I'm not conserned about other specs since I'm not a poweruser on hardware. EDIT: I'm norwegian so regional keyboard setup is important (we use the letters ÆØÅ a lot...)

    MDK-10-RC-1

I'm planning to rebuild my desktop at easter (don have any money to go anywhere, so I may just stay inside and fiddle with my PC right!?). Anyone got any idea if MDK 10 will be out and public by then?
  24. This may be because of the agreement they have with Microsoft. Some OEM's have (or at least had in the old days) an agreement with Microsoft saying that they had to pay a license to Microsoft for every machine buildt, no matter if they deliver it with or without a Microsoft OS. In return they get a good price on OEM licenses so that they can make money on the OS too. I would love to be able to buy a laptop with Linux preinstalled and save money on the darn Microsoft OEM license I don't need, tell me where to sign up
  25. I run MDK with KDE on my desktop and Fedora with Gnome on my laptop. I must say I prefer KDE, can't really explain excatly why, I just feel more at home. On my laptop I've installed Fluxbox (because it's a very low spec machine), but haven't gotten it quite to work.... I may have to start a new thread on that soon.
