  1. I'm glad it's normal... I think I just got a little jumpy after discoving my mistake with the firewall B) I've run rkhunter and it's all clear - phew! And my 'net connection's playing normal again, hurrah. I do get very jumpy about security here - the college's firewall etc is fab, but we're a science and technology college, so inside the firewall there are always going to be script kiddies in training wanting to show off :sigh: Many thanks to everyone!
  2. It was in /var/log/messages. I'm also worried because gconfd (which I can't find out about) keeps on starting with no intervention from me: eg gconfd (root-xxxx) starting (version 2.4.0.1) PID xxxx user "root" eek!
  3. Hi, I've been running 9.2 for the past month or so on a large college network, and I've just realised that I did something VERY stupid when I set the thing up: I thought on the firewall you checked the boxes for services you wanted to be able to use, rather than what you want other people to have access to! So I've had web server, domain name server and ftp enabled. I've now _dis_ enabled them (no boxes checked under drakfirewall), but is there any way of checking my system hasn't been hacked? A couple of things worry me: 1) my net connection is slower than it ought to be 2) I'm getting lots of martians in /var/log/messages 3) I've just found an entry in the system logs "forbidding remote root login" Should I be worried? I am, as you can tell, a complete n00b!
  4. Hi, I'm running 9.2 and am having problems installing things from tarballs. When I run ./configure it gives me the following error: error: Qt (>= Qt 2.2.2) (libraries) not found I haven't done any upgrades or anything of qt, I installed it off the CDs. I have libqt3-3.1.2-15.3.92mdk libqt3devel-3.1.2-15.3.92.mdk installed, and the files in the usual place (/usr/lib/qt3). I had a google and a poke around my files, and I think I'm missing the file(s) libqt.so.3. They're not in /usr/lib/qt3/lib or /usr/lib. Is this the problem, or is something else wrong? Thanks!
  5. :woops: I've also now read FAQ 17 from Shorwall. Double :woops:
  6. Hi, I'm a complete n00b to Linux security, so bear with me. I'm running 9.2 on an internal college network and in /var/log/messages I'm getting lots and lots of entries that look like: Shorewall:net2all:DROP:IN=eth0 OUT=MAC= [snip] SRC= [snip] DST= [snip] LEN= [snip] TOS= [snip] PREC= [snip] TTL= [snip] ID= [snip] ICMP= [snip] TYPE= [snip] CODE= [snip] ID= [snip] SEQ= [snip] What's going on? Is it a problem that I'm gettting all these messages (eg between 12.05 and 12.20 there were 25 such messages logged)? I've tried googling etc, but I can't find what I want to know... Thanks!
  7. I also had problems with sound (on 9.2) - but in my case judicious use of kmix sorted it!
  8. Thankyou! I've got the internet and volume buttons working great, thanks. What would the commands for cut, paste and copy be? Cheers!
  9. Can anyone help with a LinEAK problem? I've added a new keyboard (got the keycodes from another site) and am now presented with editing the lineakd.conf file. I haven't the faintest idea what goes there! The file is: Backward = Calculator = Copy = Cut = Favorite = Forward = Internet = Mail = Mute = Next = Paste = Play|Pause = Previous = Search = Sleep = Stop = VolumeDown = VolumeUp = and I need to put things after the "=", but what I don't know...
  10. It works!!! Thankyou so much! Respect
  11. I got: XFree86-75dpi-fonts-4.3-24.4.92mdk XFree86-xfs-4.3-24.4.92mdk XFree86-4.3-24.4.92mdk XFree86-server-4.3-24.4.92mdk so I guess not! What are the packages called that I need?

  13. I'm trying to install LinEAK on 9.2 using KDE and am running at Konsole ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc as per instructions. It doesn't work because of what must be the bizarrest error I've ever got: configure: error: You must have X installed Does anyone know what's going on? 14. I am so embarrassed... all that was wrong was I didn't add my proxy settings to software media manager. Anyway, if anyone's interested, the above advise all work!!
  15. Hi, I've just installed 9.2 from some CDs I burnt about 6 months ago, and I had this same problem when I tried to update. I've now done all of the above (removed the update, re-built the rpmdb and rebooted). Now when I try to update it says it can't find a network connection to get the mirror list. My network's working fine, I've disabled firewall... still nothing. The thing is, it doesn't seem like the server's down because it comes up with the error instantly.
  16. Thanks! Actually, I've just realised where I was going wrong with Kile, so I'll have another bash at that... if it doesn't work out, I'll try your suggestion. Many thanks for you help!
  17. Thanks, coverup, I've had a look at Lyx and Texmacs, but they both seem to be WYSIWYG, which isn't really what I want. I can code easily in LaTex, I just want a nice program that puts everything (dvi, ps, bib) together, like WinEdt/Kile.
  18. I've finally snapped over XP on my desktop and am going to put a Mandrake partition on it as the primary OS, keeping M$ for games. However, my main concern is finding a suitable LaTex front-end (I'm currently writing up my PhD so this is THE main concern!). I've got 9.2 on my laptop and run Kile when I need to, but I can't get anything other than the 'quickbuild' to work, which is fine for small files, but not for a 100,000 word thesis! I use WinEdt on XP, which is fab, but I'd love not to have to boot into Windows whenever I need to work, SO... is there a good LaTex front-end for Gnome (I prefer it to KDE), on a par (ish) with WinEdt, that can handle large files? NB having perused these forums I'll be installing 9.2 rather than 10 B)
  19. I've been having all sorts of problems with getting 1024x768 on my laptop, but found a fairly ugly hack . I havn't found a way of switching between resolutions as the ctrl++/- doesn't work because I don't have a keypad (not sure how many laptops do). Maybe you could set up two different virtual desktops somehow? Oh, and my screen isn't blurry or anything at the lower-than-native resolution.
  20. Thankyou so much for your help - I've updated and I have a screensaver!
  21. Thanks. How do I run mandrakeupdate (I am a n00b!!)?
  22. I installed 9.2 and I can't find any screensavers for KDE: when I go to the control centre the list is blank and the buttons for install can't be clicked. Are they on my system and just not being found, or is there anywhere I can download them from?
  23. Ok - I've made it work, but have no idea why! I had a look at the log file generated when I tried "startx" and found a line: Not using default mode "1024x768" (vrefresh out of range) so I changed the vrefresh in the config-4 file. This page gave me the courage to yank it all the way up to 20-200 which then gave me X at 1024x768 when I started it. Hooray, but what on EARTH is Mandrake thinking of???? Thanks for your time.
  24. I've migrated from Win2000 and I'm fairly sure it was running the lower resolution then - in that I could see it!
  25. I've installed Mandrake 9.2 on my Dell inspiron 5000e. The problem is my screen resolution is stuck at 1400x1050 which seriously screws with my eyes. I want to put it to 1024x768 but can't find a way that doesn't disable the GUI. I've tried: - at setup, set a lower resolution than 1400x1050, but it returns the screen configuration error, and if I carry on it won't start up X after the install. - using the control centre in KDE. After logging out X won't start. - manually changing the /etc/X11/xf86config-4 file. Again, after logging out X won't start. - manually changing the `virtual' setting on the config file to 1024 768. After logout, you guessed it, X won't work. This is really serious as I won't be able to use Mandrake if I can't change the resolution. Help!
