  1. Curiosity, just curiosity. what is this linux-thing?! Why don't I know anyone who uses it? why the penguin? Went to a shop and bought mandrake 8.2
  2. Right. During the install you get to choose a language from an incredibly wide range of languages.
  3. The easiest way is to use easy urpmi. there's a link right here on this site. Add "main", "contrib" and "plf" sources. Then you'll be able to download and install software using the Mandriva Control Center.
  4. I don't agree. Aren't some Mandriva employees contributing to free software? See for instance linuxprinting.org Here you have a point. I really think Mandriva should stop advertising the club benefits. IMHO there's only one benefit: the early access to the ISOs. Besides I'm sure most club members didn't join to gain these so called benefits. Mandriva would be better off simply saying "download the distro and if you like it join our club --or our developpers/testers tream-- to show your appreciation".
  5. what interested me is not what he actually said but rather that he did say something. There were times when I just wondered if anyone was on board or if mandrake ship was drifting no one knows where. That was especially true when users' posts on the official forums could be left unanswered for weeks. -- Fortunately it's no longer the case as they have hired some people who do make a difference.
  6. Glad that you got the distro at last and enjoy it. I think you could still let Mandriva people know that the way they treat their customer is not right. We've been hearing bad things about the store for so long -- it's high time they fix it. I agree. I too see club membership as a way to contribute -- the only way for me actually as I don't know anything about coding or testing. But a store is just.... a store and the least it can do is deliver what customers pay for.
  7. I really like mdv 2006 and I haven't experienced any usb problem, scanner, printer and flash drive work fine.
  8. Well, I wouldn't have thought that penguin had its partisans! The new penguin is quite special too, it looks up as if it were having an epiphany... or a visitation, or ...
  9. hello, Thursday was definitely not the day, the download was far too slow! I just gave up and resumed on Saturday, which was good as I could download the 4 CDs in 3 hours. So far 2006 is just fine. BTW I'm happy they got rid of the ugly scary pinguin.
  10. I checked the site eagle-usb.org and here's some information which might solve your problem. The modem 800 E3 will not work with the driver included in mdk 10.1. You need to install the driver 2.0. and then replace the files in /etc/eagle-usb/dsp with the ones you can download from http://eagle-usb.org/download/dsp20041025.tar.bz2 See this http://dev.eagle-usb.org/wakka.php?wiki=DevEagleUsbIII
  11. try to connect to the internet either from a terminal (as root) type startadsl (you can stop the internet with stopadsl ) or from the mdk control center since your're using mdk 10.1 OE. if it doesn't work, run first eagleconfig in a terminal as root.
  12. I'll try to help though I'm not an expert. The fact is that with mdk 10.1 OE, I didn't have to do much. I used the MCC , the modem was detected and the driver installed then I ran eagleconfig in a terminal and answered all the questions about the ISP and my login and password. I also had to edit the file etc/resolv.conf With previous versions of mdk I had to do the configuration in a terminal. First , can you tell us which modem you have? Mine is 800 E2L. I undersatnd there are newer models.
  13. I use this modem and the driver which came with mdk 10.1 OE . You might see the site http://www.eagle-usb.org
  14. Hi, I had a similar problem when I installed mdk 10.1 OE a few days ago. I dowloaded the iso images on my windows98 partition but the burning programme (Easy CD creator) couldn't burn them. For some unknown reason Windows and Easy CD creator keep seeing the files as being too large for 700MB CDs. Well, they're both wrong, the ISO images do not exceed 700 MB. I used a freeware called CDBurnerXP pro 3 which was able to see the actual file sizes and burnt the ISOs on standard 700MB CDs.
  15. It's always difficult to pay for something that anyone can get for free. But it's what makes free software special. Use it and if you like it give something back -- whether it is code, money or support to other users. I am a club member not for the so-called "advantages" but simply because I like using Mandrake. I feel I owe Mandrake team something because I don't think I would have tried linux if it weren't for their distribution. When I switched to linux two years ago I was able to install and use the distribution without any help, which was good because I didn't know any linux user at the time (I still don't --- Microsoft Planet??).
  16. Here's another way to kill an application: in a terminal type $ top u userName Look for the PID of the application you want to end then type in a terminal $ kill PID
  17. They're considering selling preinstalled PCs. See the club site.
  18. Chris z and Michel, thanks. Now everything works
  19. Thanks for your explanation. I have a question about scsi emulation. When I edit lilo.conf, I can use k3b to burn CDs but I can't play DVDs anymore as I get this message from mplayer : "couldn't open DVD device: /dev/dvd". Is it normal or did I do something wrong? Is there any way I can burn CDs and play DVDs without having to edit lilo.conf and then change it back? I'd appreciate any help.
