  1. I do have the Gnome applet "CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor" loaded, however I need manual frequency scaling. Is there any way to use this applet to manually set the CPU to low speed? Most commonly the need for low speed arises when I play a video that causes the computer to get hot. In this and other such instances I like to keep the CPU at the lower of the two speeds, so long as the video still plays well.

  2. I am using the Gnome version of 2010.0 in my Compaq N610c laptop, a 1200/2400 MHz machine. In order to manage CPU frequency I installed the package emifreq-applet, described as;

EmiFreq applet is a little GNOME applet that shows/control the CPU frequency and temperature thanks to the cpufreq sysfs kernel interface. The emifreqd daemon is also included to enable the applet to change the cpu speed through the CPUFreq extension of the sysfs.

    I then used Gnome's "Add to Panel" to attempt adding "CpuFreq Monitor" to the panel. Unfortunately the applet did not install, instead the following message was displayed;

The applet didn't manage to find CpuFreq support in the sysfs. You need your kernel to have built-in support for CpuFreq or use the module corresponding to your processor type in order to run this applet.

What package should I add to enable this CpuFreq Monitor applet?

  3. I tried running with both 'intel 810' and 'intel 810 and later'. The first one failed to load (as you reported in your bug report), and the second one is not exactly successful (limited to 1024x768 resolution ,does not support two-screens display, does not support Composite). Does your 'intel 810 and later' driver run smoothly (does all the things I have just mentioned)?

It runs smoothly but I didn't try any exotic configurations. I am using a single monitor at 1024x768.

I have a CD ROM reader (actually I used it to load boot.iso). I was forced to use the network because as I previously mentioned, the live CD didn't work (probably the same driver problem again). The problem is that Free comes only in DVD now, no CD's version.

You say there's no 2010.0 Free version on CD? What about the file mandriva-linux-free-dual-2010.iso at this site?

  4. I'm using Intel 810 graphical card, and apparently it is not supported well by the kernel or the driver (I'm not sure which to this very day). Although other users complained about the same problem, it was not fixed on RC2 and the official release of 2010.0.

I also have a computer with Intel 810 graphics. Note that this is antique hardware (667 MHz computer) which I got for free out of a local dumpster. Even though I am a novice Linux user I easily solved this problem. I then reported it in Bug 55438. Two guys from Mandriva responded promptly and I expect the problem will be fixed by the next release.

since I do not have a DVD drive (my IBM X30 is quite old), I had to install from the network. I booted from the boot.iso file, and from there established connection and got connected to a mirror. After the upgrade Gnome didn't load. Since I didn't care too much, I did a fresh installation (again, from the network), and formatted the hard drive.

You should at least get a CD ROM reader so you can try booting Mandriva Free, Gnome, or KDE.

  5. Has anyone actually used the bittorrent chunk prioritization feature to begin watching a video minutes after beginning the bittorrent download? It seems like a feature many people would like, but I don't see how it could be done with our current bittorrent programs because "prioritize first and last" means that the middle of the video will arrive last.

  6. I installed 2010.0 Gnome and problem persists. Firefox is still very slow, my laptop computer runs hot and CPU fan runs more than normal. When viewing videos at www.hulu.com Mandriva 2010.0 Gnome is not fast enough to show every frame in full screen mode, although this works well on same computer when running Windows, and also worked well under previous versions of Mandriva on same computer. I think something went wrong during installation of 2010.0, but am unsure how to diagnose the problem.

I have attached the full text of my dmesg file in case someone can find a clue there.

    dmesg-01.txt

  7. Since I've installed M2010.0 KDE4, Firefox and OpenOffice Calc have unusual latency when updating the video display. My computer is a 2.4GHz Compaq N610c.

A small spreadsheet now takes 9 seconds to display when maximizing it from the task bar, or moving about the spreadsheet once it is on screen.

Firefox (3.5.5) is often slow responding to page-up and page-down. For instance when I page-down to the bottom of https://mandrivausers.org/ then page-up to top (3 pg-ups to reach top) the second page-up takes 4 seconds before the page appears in it's final form. Below is a snapshot of top sometime during those 4 seconds. What can I do to make Firefox faster? Would it help if I was using Gnome instead of KDE4?

  8. Thanks to you both for those package names. After some delay to upgrade from 2009.0 to 2010.0 I have installed both Deluge and Vuze.

I see that both Deluge and Vuze have a feature to prioritize first and last pieces of the file, but not sure why anyone would need the last piece of the file before the middle has arrived. I was hoping for a feature that gets the chunks approximately from start to finish.

I am using Vuze now, version 4.2.0.8 fresh from the Mandriva repository. Vuze 4.2.0.8 is suggesting that I update to Vuze 4.3: Less bloat, more speed. Should I update now or wait until 4.3 arrives in Mandriva's repositories?

In the Vuze program, when I click on "Vuze HD Network" there is some undisplayed flash content and it suggests that I download "Adobe Flash Player version 10.0.32.18 Linux" from Adobe's web site. This puzzles me because I already have installed

    "flash-player-plugin Version: 10.0.32.18-1plf2010.0" as well as "flashplayer-plugin Version: 10.0.32.18-2mdv2010.0".

  9. Well, that sounds interesting. I'm encountering similar problem with Inter video card 810, and even submitted a bug report:

    https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=54576

I'll try your solution when I get home.

Did you have any success using the intel driver? I hope someone can fix this bug in time for the next release. Apparently the live CD's hardware detection set the driver as i810 on the first try, then 26 seconds later changed to the correct 'intel' driver. Even though the live CD got it right, the incorrect i810 driver was used in the xorg.conf on the hard disk.

For anyone who does not know how to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf after X11 graphics fails to start; I used Alt-F1 (or Ctrl-Alt-F1) to get a console, logged in as root (no password required). My preferred editor nano was not present so I used vim to make the change. I rebooted from command console using 'shutdown -r now'.

  10. After installing 2010.0-KDE4 from the CD I rebooted but the computer failed to enter graphical X11 mode. Eventually I found the following message in Xorg.0.log:

    "Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//i810_drv.so"

I solved the problem by changing the driver to "intel" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

If I do another installation on a similar computer, can I avoid the problem by installing from the 'Free' version CD instead of 'One'?

  11. I just installed 2009 spring. The swap partition is sda5, about 287 MB. I ran top and noticed that Swap total is 0k. Does that means my swap partition is not working?

    top - 15:36:40 up 5 min, 2 users, load average: 5.57, 3.20, 1.33

  12. I found Twinkle 1.4.1 in 2009.1/i586/media/contrib/release/ as expected, but shouldn't version 1.4.1 also appear in 2009.0/i586/media/contrib/backports/ ?

I am using 2009.0. Twinkle 1.4.2 was released on February 25, 2009. I have been waiting for it to update during one of my automatic package updates. When it did happen I eventually investigated what's in the repositories. Are the Mandriva 2009.0 repositories already dropped from current updates less that one year after it's release?

  13. You can try it this way:

    urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist 'http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/basic.2009.1.i586.list'

    urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist 'http://plf.zarb.org/mirrors/2009.1.i586.list'

If that does not work then I would suspect 'urpmi.addmedia' is getting the list of servers but failing to identify any best server for you.

  14. Just a wild guess, but you could try the alsaconf program.

I once had a laptop with a newly installed version of Mandriva which played all sounds too fast and at a high pitch, and also with gaps of silence. After running alsaconf the sound worked fine.
