  1. And here it is! The third beta!

Kinda hoped to be releasing the first RC now, but since some big troubles were found in the second beta I thought it would be a good idea to do one quick beta before.

    Download

Beta 3 can be directly downloaded from the mcnlive.info site at this point. The mirrors don't have it yet.

    http://www.mcnlive.info/downloads/mcnlive-kris-beta3.iso

    MD5: 073b4739443fb07389428b23364c2e18

Most significant changes since beta 2:

The new bootoption "nomount" is introduced to prevent the system to mount your local partition on boot. This option is in the menu as well to make your life a bit easyer. ;)

Some more control over the halt script. The remaster script does not touch it anymore. The hmconfig script now checks if it is running "live" and removes the live halt if not. The init script now checks if the halt script is there already and doesn't replace it if our script is already there.

Fonts in KDE should look a lot better. :)

  2. Update 03-18-2010:

The second beta has hit the mirrors!

Most important changes since the first beta:

    - Mounting local partitions when using copy2ram has been fixed.

    - The remaster script now checks if there is a partition for the temp files before going on.

    - The vesa bootoption now places a default xorg.conf when none was written by drakx11.

    - Antialias settings have been fixed.

    - Allowed root login through KDM.

  3. Hi, great to hear it is working well for you! :)

There are still some issues with it, but most seems to work pretty well. For example, local disks are not mounted in copy2ram mode, which is a problem when you like to do a remaster as there is no partition to place the temp files on. This is fixed in my new config script which will be on the next beta. Besides the remaster script now quits with an error if there is no partition to place the temp files on, instead of just going on and crash because of low memory. :P

The vesa bootoption is not 100% as well, since it relies on drakx11 to write a xorg.conf. In the next version, if no config file is written it places a default vesa xorg.conf in place.

Furthermore, Kris (the person, not the iso :D) doesn't like the antialias settings, but somehow the preconfigured settings won't stay in place... have to look into that once more. :)

  4. Well, in that case it might be a good idea to create a new topic about the beta for questions? This in order to prevent loads of topics about a beta as you cannot expect anything to work just fine when using a beta. Besides, its hard for us to keep track of all issues when people just post their questions anywhere.

  5. Please note that "Kris" is still in beta, please ask your questions about that version in the announcement topic here: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?/topic/101143-mcnlive-kris-beta/ or directly at mcnl here: http://www.mandrivaclub.nl/site/index.php?showtopic=11226

Do you still have a problem or was the problem just that you didn't know the password for user "live"? :)

We should have mentioned that in the announcement... sorry for that.

  6. MCNLive Kris - BETA/RC

After a few years of silence around MCNLive, here we are again with a brand new MCNLive release, based on Mandriva 2010.0!

It won't have all the nice features you might remember from MCNLive, but the most important things are there. Copy2ram is present, remastering on-the-fly is possible again and even booting from USB is no problem at all!

Note that the way MCNLive is put on an USB stick has slightly changed. There is no wizard for this anymore, but you can simply dd the iso image to your stick, just like Mandriva One. You should even be able to use Mandriva Seed to put the image on your stick! :)

As I said, there are things which we didn't got running (which doesn't mean it won't return in a next release, just not on "Kris"). For example persistent changes with a loopfile are not possible. Also the boot screens are not graphical (the boot menu still is though).

Since you need a lot more memory to run Mandriva 2010.0 with KDE 4.3 then you needed to have in order to run Mandriva 2007.1 with KDE 3.5, we added a bootoption 'useswap', which searches your drive for swap partitions and enables them, giving you some more space to breathe in. ;)

    The name "Kris"

Kris is offcourse the nickname of the original MCNLive maintainer, so in some way this can be seen as a tribute to her work. On the other hand, a kris or keris can be a weapon, which is processed in the wallpaper.

    mcnlive-kris-beta2-desktop.png

    ISO contents

MCNLive Kris is based upon a fully updated Mandriva 2010.0 release, with KDE SC 4.3 as desktop environment. SMplayer is added for your multimedia needs and since we do have a remaster option, we added K3B to enable you to burn the remaster directly. :)

Firefox is the default web browser but you can use Konqueror from the menu if you wish.

As you see, "Kris" is not filled with loads of software, but since you are able to remaster it you can easily create your own version with the pieces of software you need. :icon_idea:

    Beta testing

While most should work fine, it can perfectly be that it won't work on your hardware. Besides you might find some issues we haven't found ourselves. If you run into problems running "Kris", please let us know by replying in this topic. Please do not reply with "it doesn't work", but try to ground your reply. One small side note: if your hardware doesn't work on Mandriva One, it probably won't on MCNLive either.

In case of hardware problems, the output of this command can be very helpful:

    lspcidrake -v

    Putting "Kris" on USB

As said, you should be able to use Mandriva Seed, but if you're not affraid to use the command-line you can easily use the dd-command. Note that you put the image over the whole stick, not on a partition so you lose all contents of the stick!

    dd if=mcnlive-kris-beta1.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=8M && sync

Where you change sdX into the device of your choice. Please be careful selecting the right device or you might overwrite your harddrive. ;)

    Download

You can download the beta on one of these mirrors:

    ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/man...l/mcnlive/Kris/

    ftp://ftp.surfnet.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/m...l/mcnlive/Kris/

  7. Some time after Chris quit working on MCNLive, she left the mcnlive.org domain as well and removed all html content from her site.

Short after, someone reclaimed the domain and put a copy of the site back online.

Though we are grateful for that, we would like to put some new news on the site, or at least a message stating that it's not the official site anymore. Problem is... we have no idea who put the site back online so we don't know who to contact.

If you have any idea who is behind mcnlive.org right now, please let us know.

  8. Hi, I don't know exactly the differences between the 2 remaster scripts. I wrote one for MCNLive, and that's where my input stops. I know the guys from PCLOS are using it (one of them pm'ed me about it) but I haven't looked into it yet. I didn't look into it simply because MCNLive is a bit dead now :(

As far as I can remember the script in MCNLive is using zenity. Only the yes/no dialogs were replaced by kdialog since zenity doesn't have those. (I might be wrong, it's been a while...)

I don't know about PCLOS 2008... I have never tried it.

  9. In the sources of 2008.1 is a programm called "mklivecd", here is a description of it
mklivecd - Builds a LiveCD from an existing Mandriva Linux installation

it seems that it can make it on a usb-stick.

    Maybe this works for you.

    Willliiiiiieeeeeeeeee! :lol2:

No, mklivecd is broken, this is the tool Chris has been using to create MCNLive :D

i can understand chris retiring due to time constraints i just wish she could have documented her process better so we all could have learned from it.
Please understand that mklivecd is not a product Chris created. She maintained the scripts for Mandriva, but she has not written the scripts from scratch.
  10. I know, and yes I've read the topic... I even have replied to it then, but they didn't realy like my reply :D

Draklive is not really an option, since it cannot create live cd's from an installed system, and as such we are not able to do any configuration. Besides, draklive documentation is very poor, despite of many people (including myself) asking for understandable documentation... :(

  11. Hi,

I'm a crewmember of the Dutch Mandriva Club, and have been involved with MCNLive a bit in the past few releases (I am the creator of the graphical remaster script for instance).

Now, with Chris gone MCNLive can simply be declared dead... :(

Problem is, we have no-one who really understands the mklivecd scripts, and the Mandriva boot process for that matter. We have a few people (including myself) on the MCNL board that understand how to create a live cd with the help of a working mklivecd script, but simply no-one who can update the mklivecd that much that it will work for MDV2008.x/2009.x again.

This really gives an idea how much knowledge Chris had (or still has) about the whole kernel and boot process.

I have tried to build a live cd from a Mandriva 2008.0 and 2008.1 system, but failed miserably... since this already have cost me a lot of time, I decided to stop trying. I'd love to see a new MCNLive again... but I simply can't do it as I don't have all of Chris' knowledge. Besides that it seemed as if I was the only one even trying, which was very frustrating... I now understand how Chris must have felt, doing things all by herself.

Now, with the upcoming 2009.0 release, I figured it would be very cool to have a working live cd again. Not like One, but like the 'old' MCNLive. MCNLive was by far superior to One, as it has much more features (think about creating remasters, copy2ram, etc.). Problem is I still don't understand enough about the boot process to deal with this myself, and I just don't have enough spare time to figure it out myself. But without this 'base', we simply cannot continue.

So the actual question here is: Is there anyone who has managed to create a live cd off of a Mandriva 2008.x system, that wishes to share his or her knowledge with us? :)

  12. Delft and Toronto are almost the same. Toronto is just a bit bigger, has more software preinstalled :)

About the MCNLive project: It's a project of the Dutch MandrivaClub (that's where the name comes from: "Mandriva Club NL live")

The problem is.. there is no-one that fully understands the process of creating a live cd, the way Chris understands this... so it will be very hard to find someone who can replace her. I tried, but have not yet succeeded to create a livecd off Mandriva 2008.0 :(

  13. Wow, and this is the easy way? ;)

    The way I do it:

    - Install one main system, the one you will be working on

    - Install a second system, which will be the live cd at the end. This has to be on 1 single partition!!

    - Install mklivecd from contrib on the main system, and mount the second system.

    - Copy the mklivecd scripts from the Toronto cd (you can do this directly from the iso, just mount the livecd.sqfs file with "mount -o loop -t squashfs"), and replace the original scripts with those.

    Now, run mklivecd --verbose --root=/mnt/path/to/your/second/install livecd.iso :)

    That's it! Really! :)

Now, if you'd like to install extra packages on the second install, don't boot into it, just use "urpmi --root=/mnt/path/to/your/second/install" :)

  14. As for remastering from a hard-disk install, I am aware that I could compile my own kernel WITH support for the squashfs filesystem (and any other filesystems required), but I can't be bothered doing that just for this project.
Why do you think the kernel has no squashfs support??

The standard Mandriva kernels all have it...

What kernel are you using? (uname -r)

The kernel with MCNLive Toronto off course has squashfs support... if it didn't, then how would you be able to boot the cd? ;)

By the way, I'm the "creator" of FreevoLive, which is build off of a clean 2007.1 system, with the mklivecd script from Chris' MCNLive cd :)

I am using the stock 2.6.17.x kernel (have done it with 2.6.17.5/8/13/14/15 and some legacy kernels)... no problems at all :)

Maybe you could be more specific in the error you get, while building the live system?

  15. Last week I've upgraded my Mandrake 10.0 installation (installed from the original, bought dvd), to version 10.1 via urpmi.

Ever since that, I can't run ANY graphical mandrake configuration tool.

When run one of these programs in a console, I get the following message (Dutch):

Afbeeldingstype van bestand '/usr/share/icons/drakconf.png' niet herkend at /usr/lib/libDrakX/ugtk2.pm line 613.

In English, this should mean something like this:

Image type of file '/usr/share/icons/drakconf.png' is not recognized at /usr/lib/libDrakX/ugtk2.pm line 613.

I've tried reinstalling all drak* packages, but that didn't seem to work.

I've downloaded drakconf-10.1-1tex.i586.rpm from rpm.pbone.net since that seems to provide this drakconf.png file, but that didn't solve any problem also. :wall:

    Anyone?
