  1. Thanks, I did search but obviously not well enough. Hopefully this will fix the problem with firefox not being able to save to anywhere but Desktop too.
  2. I'm running Mandriva 2007 and whenever I open gnome-terminal the session is in ~/Desktop - I'd much rather it was just ~, but I can't figure out where the setting is, anyone any ideas?
  3. Anyone any idea when the ISO's should be available for ftp or http download? I can't use bittorrent from work (and yes, I am wanting to download Mandriva for work purposes ;) ).
  4. Have you tried pinging other machines on your LAN via the command line? Are you sure the DHCP server can give you an address?
  5. iptables -F will flush all of the iptables rules.
  6. Did you configure via mcc or directly via cups? If you want to try directly via cups then point a browser at localhost:631
  7. Just to try and clear things up, how is the router connected to your machine? Can the machine connected to the router access the Internet?
  8. Are you providing the correct username and password for the remote windows machine?
  9. If it's that much of a killer app, why am I still using gnome? :P Note: the article is actually about konq being KDE's killer app.
  10. After making a copy of them, I'd probably delete all of the kmail settings/accounts and then re-enter them. Of course, not much point in doing that if you're reinstalling ;)
  11. You may be able to get lucky with the open source 3D ATI drivers, but if not you can donwload closed source ones from the ATI website.
  12. How are you thinking of connecting them together? Wired or wireless? If it were me, I'd probably buy a wired switch as that will pretty much take care of most things. Depending on your situation, a combined ADSL modem/router with dhcp server could be even better.
  13. If you set up the machine and you don't know, chances are that 3D acceleration is not working. The best way to check is with the command: glxinfo | grep "direct rendering" and you're looking for the answer of yes. Do you know what graphics card the machine has?
  14. My guess would be visual molecular dynamics. Does your machine have hardware opengl support (and configured to use it)?
  15. At my linux machine (work) I rip cd's as ogg. At home (OS X) it's AAC. AAC because it seems better than MP3 to my ear and because my iPod mini will play it. If ogg was an option for my iPod and iTunes then I would use it over MP3 or AAC.
  16. As a Mac user for a bit over 18 months I'm a bit ho-hum about Leopard. The versioning file system is kinda neat and spaces (obviously in other *nix since forever) could be quite cool if it works well with expose. Everything else is pretty underwhelming for me, perhaps some under-the-hood changes like launchd from tiger will grab my attention.
  17. If you've not already tried it, installing gentoo (using the old installer) or perhaps even arch could be a good learning experience in itself. Once you've got the hang of that you'll probably know whether or not to try LFS.
  18. The mandriva rpm for ndiswrapper has been broken in the past so I'm too not surprised.... I'll make sure to recommend people try the source version.
  19. This almost sounds like you don't have the correct kernel source installed when you try to compile ndiswrapper from source. FWIW, lots of people on the ndiswrapper database report success with this same chipset - you could try downloading one of the drivers they recommend (seem to be lots of Acer ones).
  20. do a lspci -n and look for the entry with 00:07.0 in, what does that return?
  21. Having had more of a think, it would be handy if Linux could run photoshop, illustrator and microsoft office (although OpenOffice does most of the MS stuff OK) natively. It would make my life easier!
  22. Don't worry about asking questions, that's what we're here for. What driver are you trying to load with ndiswrapper? Have you checked the ndiswrapper database (see pinned information at the top of the networking forum). It lists what success people have had with various drivers. Note, you should find the PCID of the wireless chip as many manufacturers have different names for essentially the same cards.
  23. When you try the modprobe command (which is trying to insert a module (driver) into the kernel) you can look at the kernel output with dmesg, perhaps there will be a clue in there. To be honest, I'm getting quite confused about what versions of ndiswrapper are installed where. If that's the case for you it may be an idea to either reinstall the OS (depending on how much free time you have B) ) or hunt down all versions of ndiswrapper and remove them.
