  1. sorry guys i meant that ati only mentions the 2.4 kernel !!!! whoops
  2. Hi just started using Mandrake Linux 10 community - it seems really good! A couple of my friends are attempting to install Linux on their computers, one of them (who is pretty technically minded) is having problems getting his ATI Radeon 9600 to work. He is just about to install Mandrake 10 community , but after looking at the release notes with Ati's latest drivers only mentions kernel 2.6 support It is possible to install with Mandy 10 community with full 3d support? Personally i got my Nvidia geforce 3 card up and running with the latest Nvidia driver (which does have 2.6 support) in about 10 mins. Cheers for any advice guys
  3. hi SoulSe, Thanks for your quick response. It is 1/2 speed for sure - i boot to windows (on the same isp) and it's normal speed, go back to mandy 10 and it's cut back to half! Its fine when i access the internet through a LAN (with the modem in another (WINDOWS!) computer sharing it's connection). I'm attempting to basically use linux in a box which shares it's net connection with the network - the windows box that is presently used has a tendency to crash! Any clues ?
  4. Hi people, Just upgraded to mandrake linux 10 community. Firstly i must say it looks really good, the new menu is better and the whole thing seem faster and more responsive. Also I managed to get my Nvidia geforce 3 card working (in full 3d) within about 15 minutes! Unreal 2004 demo also seemed faster. My problem is with my Alctel speedtouch 330 ADSL USB modem (and has been since i first attempted to in MANDRAKE 9.2). I go through the setup and i can connect to the internet but i'm only getting a max speed of 280 kbps instead of the usual 560 kbps. Is there a file i can change to change the speed Any help would be good - Everybody try out Mandy 10 community !!!!! Cheers
  5. http://www.distrowatch.org/?newsid=01422 I imagine the servers will be pretty clogged for a while Hopefully i will be able to get my usb speedtouch modem working this time !
  6. Make sure that you mention CUBE, http://www.cubeengine.com/ It's a really good open source multiplayer FPS (Q3 clone), the download works in both linux and windows (different executables). On my machine the Linux verison is faster, smoother and works better online! The graphics are very good (it is still being worked on), and cube 2 is in development (a doom 3 clone!).
  7. Hi people, I'm tring to get dreamweaver 4 work on mandrake linux 9.2 using wine so i can ditch windows from our office pc's. I have read loads of guides of how to do it (franks corner, etc) and am having no joy I have installed the version of wine that came with Mandrake ( i just installed wine and wine-utils and have not set anything else up) and when i try to install run 'Dreamweaver 4 Installer.exe" it starts to install (i get the progress bar, etc) but i get this message "The InstallShield Engine (iKernel.exe) could not be installed. The Folder 'c:\Program Files\Comman FillesREE8' could not be created. Make sure that you have the appropiate privileges to create this folder. (0x5)" After reading various guide I attempted to install dcom95 and dcom98, when attempting to install them by the command : wine dcom95.exe i get the following message in the konsole 'fixme:win32:PE_CreateModule Security directory ignored' i also get the following message in the wine windows 'Command line option syntax error. Type command /? for Help.' i have also tried to install dcom with the following syntax 'wine --dll ole32=n DCOM98.EXE' and i get the following message in konsole. 'Unknown option '--dll ole32=n' Wine 20030813 Usage: /usr/bin/wine.bin [options] [--] program_name [arguments] The -- has to be used if you specify arguments (of the program) Options: --debugmsg name Turn debugging-messages on or off --dll name Enable or disable built-in DLLs --help,-h Show this help message --version,-v Display the Wine version' Have anyone any suggestions ?? Cheers

  9. Hi people, I have just updated the kernel of mandrake 9.2. I installed the kernel-2.4.22.21mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm from a mandrake ftp mirror using urpmi. Everything is ok and working except that now when i select to load linux at the lilo boot screen i no longer get the nice looking blue loading bar screen ( it used to say press esc for verbose mode). How do i get the loading screen back? Or should i just revert to the original (but by all accouns bugged) kernel 2.4.22.10. Thanks Guys
  10. Hi people, Just tryed to install texstar's Kde 3.1.4. I have to say it's really good. It seems quicker than my previous version and he has cheekily designed an XP style kde control panel - obviously much better than M$'s version. My only problem i have found is that i no longer get my recently used programs at the top of the kde menu, i still get my recently used documents, but having your recently used app at the top was really helpful. Has anyone any ideas how to get it back? I'm not that experenced with Linux yet (but i'm learning). I have Mandrake 9.1, Kernel 2.4.21-0.25, XFree 4-3.8.2 Cheers

  15. Hi people, I using mandrake 9.1 I have just downloaded the latest version of mozilla firebird (0.7). It seems very good, loads up much quicker than normal Mozilla. But i have one problem, in normal mozilla the fonts are smooth (anti aliased) , in firebird they seem much rougher and not anti aliased. I have looked in the fonts settings in both Mozilla and Mozilla firebird and have noticed one main difference. In Mozilla all fonts except proportial are on [system default] , proportial is set on serif. In Mozilla firebird the fonts are all different (e.g - adobe-couier-iso8859) and there is no option of [system default] Is it possible to use the smooth fonts of firebird? Cheers
  16. Hello, I am newish (2 months) to Linux, and i am so impressed by mandrake linux 9.1, i have got all my hard ware to work (quake 3 is better in linux than windows now!) expect my microsoft gamepad (gameport version) What do i have to do and how do i test it? I have looked at many forums and have never manged to find a solution My specs :- Athlon 1.4 Nvidia 3 ti200 Soundblaster PCI 128 Mandrake linux 9.1 (the best OS i have ever used) Here is part of my lsmod output: es1371 29032 1 soundcore 6276 0 [es1371] ac97_codec 12488 0 [es1371] gameport 3316 0 [es1371] I have seen in a few foums to do - modprobe joydev and modprobe sidewinder, i have done these commands and my pad still doesn't work at all. But here is part of my lsmod after i have issued those commands sidewinder 9816 0 (unused) joydev 7040 0 (unused) input 5664 0 [sidewinder joydev] es1371 29032 1 soundcore 6276 0 [es1371] ac97_codec 12488 0 [es1371] gameport 3316 0 [sidewinder es1371] Have anyone any ideas?
  17. none of them have a firewall that is on. After messing about with the settings now one of the machines cannot see the other one at all The other one can see itself and the other. But - i can still play games if i specify a ip address . Any ideas ??
  18. Hi people, I have a home network of 2 machines, both have mandrake 9.1 and win 98 on. Both machines have a static address machine 1 : - 192.168.0.2 machine 2 : - 192.168.0.3 I can share files via samba, and via a nfs mount (mandrake control centre - set nfs mounts) but i am having the following problems (on both machines) - The lan browser on konquer doesn't see the other machines - in fact it sometimes crashes - is there a way to view a linux lan like network neightbourhood, i have linneighbour but that is only samba compatible - When setting the nfs mount the other machine's name is displayed as the ip addresss instead of the proper host name - is that to do with dhcp - also it might be causing my last problem - in multiplayer games, such as quake 3 , i cannot the other machine when browsing for servers . I actually have to put in the ip address to connect - what can i do to make my machines found? Cheers everybody :)
