  1. They are different. iptables-ipv6-1.2.7a-2mdk is on CD3 and is not installed... so it is available for you to install, whereas, iptables-1.2.7a-2mdk is currently installed on your system and available to be removed (from CD1). I agree with GorGor that you should uninstall guarddog, iptables, and gnutella... for the moment anyway and then go back into Mandrake Control Center and choose Security and DracSec. Select standard and this should then reset your computer's security to a reasonable level where you will have access to the net and also allow your apps access. If later you decide you need more control you can add guarddog or firestarter through MCC --> Security --> DrakFirewall.

I am sure there is a way, but I guess the easiest way SHOULD be the upgrade option. But lots of people have had major problems with upgrading from one version to the next. Lots have also had success. The question is will 9.2's upgrade feature work or not. We will have to wait and see.

No, it should not be sucking up all your resources. Maybe its a network/firewall setting or maybe its setting with overnet (although there really isn't much to mess up in there) I really don't know. Seeing some of your problems you've been having and guessing you may have a few botched up installs during your learning phase with Linux, I would suggest starting fresh with a clean install with 9.2. Things always seem to work much better with every clean install... I've had my share during my first two years. I give you credit tho for your persistance and sticking it out. You'll be a guru in no time

I seen you have an open thread on guarddog and ports in our security forum. I hope someone will be able to solve this port problem there. No, haven't been to www.cpan.org yet, I decided to wait until the new perl goes final or I get 9.2 final installed with whatever version they use. I gave up on that perl stuff for now after nearly hosing my system with cooker perl stuff... time to play it safe for a while.

YW, Check for an entry in your menu --> Configuration --> Packaging --> Software Sources Manager. This opens a window (for me in KDE) that shows my sources I have configured. In my previous example this is where I deselected plf and tex to see the exact message I would get when trying to install one of their rpms. This is where I go back to and select them again, so my system sees those rpms at their site. I would check out our security forum for answers on guarddog. BTW: I have been trying to update gimp, version 1.2.3 to latest stable version 1.2.5. I have tried several rpms from various sources and they all come back saying, "Perl (file::Slurp) is needed." I decided to stick with the 1.2.3 version till MDK 9.2 goes final. I think this Perl stuff is one of the upgrades they have been working on and we are caught inbetween versions.
  6. Sometimes an open window will cause that (especially konq browser). anyway, here's my cd rom entries in a default Mandrake 9.1 install after setting up k3b: none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/hdd,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 Should be one line per device. You also have each CD drive listed twice. (Hard to really tell with this word wrapping here)

Huh :?: I heard mldonkey was evil and supposedly hurt the sharing community, but what is this hidden map ??? Sure it is not a hidden folder, such as: /home/scoopy/.mldonkey EDIT: Skywalker sent me pm confirming he did mean to say "hidden folder." My intentions were not to make fun of his English, but thought maybe he meant something else, such as spyware or trojan.

Overnet or any other p2p app needs an open port to work smoothly. Would need more info on your setup... such as if your running dial-up or cable? Router? Maybe someone else can answer how to open or forward a port through guarddog? Leave it running for a few minutes and then see if you can search for things. Maybe add a directory (right click in the left column under the shared tab) It should still work, but will report that you are firewalled. Here's two good sites for info: http://www.edonkey2000.com/documentation/c.../clientfaq.html and http://forums.edonkey2000.com/phpBB/index.php She's great, isn't she (Yes, my arm was twisted to respond that way  ) let's see: [root@localhost scoopy]# urpmi gtk-gnutella no package named gtk-gnutella I guess that means that package is not available... according to the sources I have configured. But I see by your next question you already know where to find it and if you add it to your sources, it will produce a different result the next time I try that. Go here and fill in the blanks: http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/ It will spit out the exact line(s) to enter to add these sources. Hey, our ftp site is in there too! 8)

Allright! As with any p2p app, you will want to be sure that port is open thru your firewall... if you expect to get any decent download speed. I am not familiar with guarddog, but try to allow that port (4262) through. I am not at my machine now, but will post more info later tonight.

Cool, looks like we are almost there. 8) Your host is the IP address of the machine you are running. Let's not worry about the technical stuff behind this at this time. If your running Mandrake and can surf the net, the default setup will work here (unless your setup is configured differently and then you would most likely know what to put here). That line should like like this: localhost One word, No quotes or other punctuation. The username and password here is just for this application. It has nothing to do with anything else. Your username will show to other users downloading from your shares.

The tar.gz file should unpack the following files into a overnet folder in your home folder, such as: file:/home/scoopy/overnet/incoming file:/home/scoopy/overnet/temp file:/home/scoopy/overnet/contact.dat file:/home/scoopy/overnet/donkey0.50.1 file:/home/scoopy/overnet/friend.met file:/home/scoopy/overnet/known.met file:/home/scoopy/overnet/log.txt file:/home/scoopy/overnet/overnet0.50.1 file:/home/scoopy/overnet/pref.met file:/home/scoopy/overnet/README file:/home/scoopy/overnet/server.met file:/home/scoopy/overnet/share.dat file:/home/scoopy/overnet/uploadq.dat NOTE: a couple of these were added automatically on first run. The command line client is available as a rpm file, which you should be able to double click to install. Once the above is accomplished, open up a term or konsole and type in: ed2k_gui This should get things going and bring up a connect window: Fill in host as "localhost" core port: 4262 (or something that is available on your network) your username and password path: /home/kilimanjaro/overnet/overnet0.50.1 Then click on "spawn core" and after a couple seconds it should say it is running running. Then click "GO" and you should be up and running. Any problems, let us know, OK? Hope this helps you. :D

Just wanted to suggest trying eDonkey or Overnet instead. You could be downloading instead of trying to work out mldonkey's problems (which I hear are more than just the install) http://www.edonkey2000.com/downloads.php You will need 2 files: Command Line Client (v0.50.1) and the Core Controller Once installed you need to start the first time via konsole with "ed2k_gui"
  14. Glad to here your up and running. I would of never thought it was a power saver option. No need to feel stupid. I really don't get how this hung up the system... especially if it was busy working on an install ??? But it works now and thats a good thing. :D

    mplayer...

I figured out what I needed to do... install a nvidia driver. Once I did that, I went back into preferences and selected the xv driver. Now I can scale videos from normal to full screen again. I had forgotten all about installing a video driver cause everything else I use was working fine with the default. I would guess a new ATI driver install would help things on your end.
  16. I still don't think this is a harddrive problem (and that test supports this). Everything I find through google is comming up that it is a memory problem. Sarissi makes a good point that harddrives usually make a really ugly sound when they go. I guess my next step would be to reinstall your ram and other cards plugged into the mobo and see if that helps any. Might pay to contact Asus to decode that 3 beeps.
  17. What does the Seagate hard drive diagnostics tell you about your drive?
  18. You can go to any mirror, such as: ftp://mirrors.secsup.org/pub/linux/mandra...pdates/9.1/RPMS and download what you need. harddrake-9.1-31.3mdk.i586.rpm and harddrake-ui-9.1-31.3mdk.i586.rpm are the ones dealing with USB issues I believe. You will also want to grab anything with "drak" in its name. The others you can get later when you get access. Check out those other posts to get modem working.
  19. The more I think about this, the more it does sound like a problem I had two years ago with EZ-Bios. I looked up your board and seen it comes with ASUS EZ Flash and ASUS CrashFree BIOS 2. Don't know if it is related to EZ-Bios or not, or even if something like this is still a problem with Linux. I do remember having a heck of a time getting rid of this drive overlay feature to allow MDK 8.0 to complete the install. I did notice some BIOS updates for your MB here: http://www.asus.com/support/download/item....odelName=A7V600 One of the fixes was listed as "3. Fix Disabling IDE controller may cause system hang." (so generic, but it could be?)
  20. Be sure to install those updates after a fresh 9.1 install. The easy gui way --> Configuration --> Packaging --> Mandrake Update. I believe a USB fix was included with the updates, among many important drak tools fixes.
  21. I see Seagate even offers a Linux version of their drive diagnostic software: http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/ Seeing the harddrive is working (to a certain point), and these beeps are coming from the motherboard (or BIOS?), I would try tracking down what exactly that code is supposed to be telling you. I would double check all the basics... Master drive on end of IDE1 cable, jumper set right, BIOS options all set right, etc. No EZ-BIOS or other 3rd party partitioning software installed on hd? Just to be sure.

    mplayer...

Me thinks I got the same problem here, but I have a TNT 2 nividia card here instead. Tried installing mplayer .90-0.rc4.4mdk and .92-0.1plf om my fresh install of Mandy 9.1. I can open up a 320x240 mpeg file, which plays fine, but when I select normal, double, or full screen size, the movie stays at 320x240, while the window does change and fills with a black background. Now I somehow happen to have a copy of the config file from my previous Mandy install on same system and see that I had the xv driver selected in the preferences. But now when I chooose this in preferences, I get this: "Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device" I get this from Konsole: It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card available. Run 'xvinfo' to verify its Xv support, and read Xv section of DOCS/video.html ! so I run xvinfo: [scoopy@localhost scoopy]$ xvinfo X-Video Extension version 2.2 screen #0 no adaptors present What vo drivers do I have? Tux on Ice

thanks bvc, I seen that link this morning and downloaded several cool wallpapers from there. While at that site, I found this page full of tux goodies: http://www.sadeem.net/tux.html ps: I liked your wp too anon  and why would anyone want to talk football and politics... yawn. (I'll be out covering a local High School football game tonight myself for the newspaper I work for)
  24. Yes, that has to be one of their best pieces I read from that site. I don't think it matters whether a reader takes it for fact or fiction --- the choice is obvious! I can envision MS revoking his certification, much like how they canned Dan Geer for speaking out on the security issues with MS.
