Just got an HP DV6810US laptop. It has AMD TL-60 CPU, NVIDIA 7150M video, NVIDIA chipset, and Atheros AR5006EG (according to Linux) wireless network adapter. Windows Vista shows the wireless as AR5007. The WIFI only works with the Madwifi-Kernel-2.6.24.4...mdv2008.1.i586.rpm for the current kernel. I can compile and install both the DKMS-Madwifi RPM and the Madwifi 9.4.0 drivers from source, but after modprobe ath_pci, I do not get ATH0 to show up. I have also tried the Madwifi snapshot sources that are supposed to support the AR5007 with no luck either. I want to compile a 2.6.25 kernel specifically tailored for AMD, but does anyone know how I will be able to get the Madwifi drivers to work? What is the secret in the Madwifi-Kernel RPM that makes it work but none others work? Does using the NDISWRAPPER and XP drivers make the adapter fully functional as if the Madwifi drivers were used? With the NVIDIA video, I tried to run the binary install program for 169.12 downloaded from NVIDIA website. It seemed to compile and install OK, but I could not get an X configuration to work with it. So I installed the NVIDIA-kernel-current....169.12....i586.rpm and that worked, so am I going to have the same problem with a 2.6.25 kernel? Thanks!

I was trying to get games like Brutal Chess to work and WINE as well. I went through the DRI troubleshooting guide on their website and figured out DRI is installed by default with Mandriva and the drivers were working as they were supposed to. I got the latest WINE rpm from their website and it installs and some of the games I have tried have worked perfectly. Some of the games written for 3D in Linux, though, don't work, such as Brutal Chess. Thanks!

Does anyone know how to install DRI drivers for Radeon 9100 IGP (built into laptop) so I can get direct 3D rendering? Thanks! John

I think also kernel-version-devel will work as well to install. Version being, of course, the version of the kernel you have currently installed. Also, you might want to urpmi libqt3-devel or install libqt3-devel from the install and remove software tool. That will get you what you need to compile a lot of common programs.

ISO Master is great! Thanks! Well, it looks like the Mandriva ONE CD uses an altered version of isolinux.bin to boot with. The altered version allows for graphical boot. Probably a patch similar to bootsplash. I extracted the files out of the gfxmenu file but could not find what would correlate to the menus you get when the Mandriva ONE CD boots. So I think I am going to give up on the Mandriva ONE CD. Now I will try it with a 2008.0 DVD. I just want to add the installer files for 2008.1 and a menu line to run them so I can then install from the ISO stored on a partition. I am also going to take the automatic function out of the 2008.0 menu line so I can choose the install method with 2008.0 as well.

I usually just install the make rpm and something like libqt-devel or it might be libqt3-devel. That seems to pull all the required dependencies. The libqt-devel rpm allows for compiling programs that use QT and also for the graphic menu for configuring a kernel compilation.

So I went and got the latest version of QNETWALK. It says it optionally uses sound if the Network Audio System is installed. So I loaded the pakage for NAS, Network Audio System and QT3 devel libraries. I did QMAKE, MAKE and MAKE INSTALL in qnetwalk. The game works just fine, but no sound. Any ideas how to get the sound to work in Mandriva? THANKS! john

Here's my quick questions, why I ask is explained below. 1. On the Mandriva One DVD, it appears as if ISOLINUX uses .msg files for the boot menu's. What can I use to edit the .msg files with? They are binary, not text and I have searched and can't find what program edits/creates them. 2. Is there a way to get GRUB to chainload a bootable image file? Specifically, I am trying to get GRUB to chainload the isolinux.bin boot image. 3. When I mount an ISO file as a loopback file, when I change things in the directory that I mounted the ISO file too, does the ISO file itself get continuously updated? Does the ISO file remain bootable if it was created that way to begin with? Here is what I am trying to do. I want to add the Mandriva Free installers for both 2008.0 and 2008.1 to the Mandriva One Live DVD. I am just a couple months new to Linux, after having tried it several years (decades) ago, and I keep getting my installations messed up with my tinkering so I do a lot of re-installs. I have set aside a partition where I keep the ISO files for the distrobutions and I want to create a DVD that I can use to install from those saved ISO's or have the option to run Linux direct off the DVD. I have managed to modify the Mandriva One DVD to boot with GRUB vice ISOLINUX, and I can select either the 2008.0 or the 2008.1 installer and that works fine, but I can't figure out how to add the original Mandriva One boot into grub. Also, I think I could put title lines in the insolinux.cfg file for the installers, but I can't figure out how to get those options to display in the boot menu system. I do know how to create the bootable DVD selecting either GRUB or ISOLINUX as the bootloader, I haven't had any problems with that :P THANKS for all your help and advice! John

Milo, Once you have set up the FTP sources for install and remove software, go back into media manager and either uncheck the top one or two sources that point to the DVD. Or, you can leave them checked and move them to the end of the list. I personally just uncheck them. You can even remove the DVD sources altogether once your FTP sources are set up, but I like to keep them listed, but disabled. URPMI will then get the packages from the other sources and not ask you for the DVD. Respectfully, John

What version of Mandriva did you download and burn? Was it Mandriva One? If it is Mandriva One, are you actually installing it on the hard drive, or are you just booting from the CD and it is running from the CD itself?

Thanks! They wouldn't be active at the same time, either 2008.0 or 2008.1 would be selected off the boot menu.

I want to partition and install as follows: hda1, ext3, root partition for 2008.0 hda2, ext3, root partition for 2008.1 beta testing hda 5, swap, swap partition for both 2008.0 and 2008.1 hda6, ext3, /home partition for both 2008.0 and 2008.1 Is there any problem with two different versions of Linux using the same swap partition?

Not bad. I installed it, loaded the Cooker mirrors into RPMDRAKE and ran the 213 updates, then the sound driver broke. So I reloaded and I am going back now to track down which update broke the sound driver.

I ran the install from the DVD iso file and no problems. Nobody else has had any problems with the 3 CD iso files?

I downloaded the 3 CD iso's to my hardrive. Replaced the VMLINUZ-ALL and ALL.RDZ on my boot partition with the files from the new ISO. Booted into the installer and the install goes fine until it starts hitting openoffice packages from CD 3 then I start getting bunches of package errors. Then I get notified that required packages such as shorewall and acpid aren't installed. When I boot into Beta 2, I have no shortcuts for the install/remove programs so I can't add kernel sources required to add madwifi and therefore can't get to any servers to upgrade the damage packages. Is anyone else having this problem? I downloaded another CD3 iso from a different mirror, ran the md5sum check on all three ISO's and they match. I had exactly the same problem with the second ISO file I downloaded. I let the DVD ISO download overnight so today after work I will try to install Beta 2 from that. Thanks! John

Thanks! So, I will get the Beta1 iso file, install it from my harddisk, which I have done many times before :-). Then, since the bug I had was that X would not start, in command line I will add the madwifi driver modules, which I have to first add the kernel source from the iso to do. Then I need to figure out how to start my wireless connection in command line. Then add a media source for an FTP mirror and update all using URPMI... Wow, time to hit the books! But,

Can someone please tell me what exactly I need to download in order to get the latest snapshot of Cooker? Is the ISO file listed as Beta 1 under 2008.1 updated regularly or is it the original from when it was first posted? I tried rsync on the i586 directory of a mirror under the devel directory, but it went on for 3 hours and was only 25% complete on my high speed connection, so I think I was getting much more than needed. I cannot do an install directly off the mirror sight using all.rdz and vmlinuz-all because I only have a wireless connection which does not start until I either load the madwifi modules or the kernel I built with the drivers built in. Is it just me, or is there no way to shut down the computer from within Gnome with 2008.1 Alpha 2? I can't find a power down option anywhere... Can someone please point me to the proper menu or confirm so I can bug report? Thanks! John

I don't know what happened, but now when the default Mandriva Slide Show screen saver starts, it does not occupy the entire screen. It appears to be the proper resolution, but is about 30% too low and to the right, like it is off center. I get the rest of my desktop showind in the backround that the screen saver isn't covering. Any ideas? I am using Mandriva Free installed from the 3 cd set on a Toshiba laptop with ATI Radeon 9100 and 1280x800 resolution. If I go into control panel and the screen saver options and use the test button, it works fine, this only occurs when it starts on timeout. Thanks! John [moved from Software by spinynorman]

Thanks, Ixthusdan! I just moved and haven't my Windows XP key yet, so I haven't tried setting up the dual boot. I know Windows will overwrite the MBR, then I will have to Rescue Grub with the Mandriva CD afterwards. Windows Vista has an entirely new boot loader, does anyone know if Grub has any problems with the Vista boot loader?

I too have the same question. I can't get Mandriva to boot anywhere unless I specifiy to load GRUB into the MBR. Otherwise I get the first "GRUB" screen after the bios post and then it hangs there. I would eventually like to add a Windows XP partition and be able to boot to that as an option, but all the procedures I have read for that say to install GRUB on a partition vice the MBR.
