  1. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

  2. This is a random comment..... again.

  3. If you have a console after boot, then startx should launch a gui. If it does not, then it is possible that the x server was not installed, and probably no desktop environment. So, as root, do "urpmi kde" and you should get a request to install additional packages, including the x server. After the install, then do startx. Note that this will install over 100 packages, so relax and wait for it to finish.
  4. Greetings. The reason you can't start x is because it has not "crashed" but it has failed for another reason. Terminating the process will enable you to fresh boot the x server, which is what ctrl-alt-bksp does. Since you cleared the kde directory, I suspect that you may have a hardware problem, rather than a software problem. Any other os running on the machine? Any other odd problems? Perhaps you should post the errors. PCLinusOS does not really use edgy stuff but is quite stable. My guess is hardware.
  5. Keith, do you login through a desktop manager (kdm or gdm) or through command line? The comman line option normally only allows a logout, unless you use the console to shut down. Do your choices still show up at the kde menu button? When I play around and break my desktop (we all do it) I just rename the .kde folder to .kdeold and allow kde to setup a new desktop. If it can't, then a force reinstall of certain packages is on order.
  6. You need to move past the install in order to utilize better drivers for your graphics. While a text install may be tedious, it will make a system where you can better configure a tricky graphics problem. I think X is the problem. If I had to install text mode, I would be sure to install the system first. Configure urpmi to have access on line from the community. Then I would install X. All of this can be done from the command line. If you like having a gui while at the command line, install mc (Midnight Commander). After getting X, then choose KDE or gnome (or whatever).
  7. At the boot menu, try vgalo or text install. I am troubled that the live media will not load; you may need to download the full iso. I do not think the document from 2009 is relevant in this case, as it is rather dated.
  8. Greetings! I have the usual questions for you. Did you burn with a good disk at a slower speed? Did you verify the integrity of the download?
  9. I ran an update from RC, and there were no problems at all. The only thing I have not done is an actual install outside of a virtual pc. Mandriva (like Mandrake before it) did some sort of oddity to the MBR and could cause issues if one wished to remove the boot loader. None of the other linux distros which I have used did this. I know it has something to do with misstating the parameters of the MBR. At any rate, I am hesitant to blow openSUSE out and use Mageia, just for that reason. The distro runs quite well, and actual has graphic goodies functioning in VirtualBox. My current openSUSE install has developed issues crashing X when rotating the cube. (Where's the fun in that?) Mageia release one is excellent.
  10. I have posted my positive experience in the new forum. I am testing in Oracle's Virtual Box.

Wow. I am utterly amazed at what I am reading, even before anything productive has come of Mageia. As someone who came along shortly after Tom disappeared, I must say that the users on this particular board, however you wish to personally count them, have always responded in a decent, civil, and community oriented way. I cannot say that about almost any other linux forum that I have attended. Since linux still does not have a decent printed manual, that means getting knowledge from other users it the ticket. Seriously, most forums have a response that is really positive: RTFM. In the years that I was a mod and then an admin here, we never considered such a response appropriate. I am sure thast the current folks are still just as civil. A board is a board is a board. I do not care how many anyone has run or whether anyone has their own business, because none of that is any of my business. It is the people who make the difference. Always has been and always will be. This board is the best because the people are the best. wobo, your critique rings hollow. I hope you get over whatever is ailing you. Seriously.
  13. For clarification, you are experiencing a change in the task bar location without changing the primary?
  14. I have always used the proprietary driver for making such video adjustments. I am familiar with Nvidia, since I choose those video cards, but I am certain that ATi has such instructions as well. As far as the task bar and associated icons, when you switch the primary, those items intentionally follow the primary. Perhaps you could investigate a command to simply launch your video program on the appropriate monitor without switching the primary. That is my recommendation.
  15. Can you post the content of your grub menu file? /boot/grub/menu.lst Also, how many sata devices did you have previously? Is your dvd device sata? Is it in the correct location? Anytime I switch a board, I simply use the same locations for my devices and the installation locates any new device drivers. This works for Mandriva and Opensuse. I have corrected this sort of problem with the rescue program on a Mandriva disk.
  16. It seems the block writing is the issue. To trouble shoot, format a rewritable disk in Windows and use it. Do the same, only format in linux and see how it works. Frankly, the last time I encountered an issue like this, it turned out to be a hardware problem. I had to replace my DVD device. Theoretically, block writing should work both directions, but it doesn't always. To test the hardware, download the Ultimate Boot Disk and test the device.

    forum?

Sleep? Paul, who said you could sleep? Man this place is just falling apart! I have an observation that may or may not be true. As a Christian in America, I am all too familiar with the lack of cooperation between churches, even churches within the same denomination. There is a possessive jealousy and lack of trust among congregations, and I could probably see this among other clubs and organizations. But the church example is best because Christians are admonished against such behavior. In the open source world, I have seen similar things. It ought not to be, but it is what it is. The notion of open source speaks against such, but it is something in people that brings this about. AT least that is what I think. To not use existing users bases is an absurdity, and all-too familiar.
  18. Many years ago, Mandrake was having trouble, and the person who actually started the precursor to this forum disappeared. It was most likely due to internal issues at Mandrake. Later, Mandrake became Mandriva, and other internal issues arose. At that time, Mandriva attempted to squelch the user community by "buying" those whom they considered to be key members of that community, encouraging membership in a club. Many found answers in communities such as this one to be more responsive and understanding of questions than the club. I remember when Mandriva begged for money from the very users to which it payed little heed in order to keep operating, money that they received from those users. Today, once again, doom tolls from the iron bells. The only success over this entire time which Mandrake/Mandriva has experienced has come from the very sector which they never figured out-- the users. So, whoever looks to the users, whatever distro heeds the community, that is the one which will succeed. It has always been succeeding, regardless if anyone wished to acknowledge it or not. Mageia seems to be going in that direction. If this is the case, I support their efforts. It is not ending, just moving on.
  19. This error has several causes: 1) The server has a problem or is overloaded. 2) the hdlist.cz is not current (it is probably rebuilding) 3) someone moved the hdlist.cz to the wrong location. (An admin would never do that, would they?) 4) Some aspect of the link from you and that server is garbage. Solution: if there is an alternate server, change to that location. Otherwise, there is nothing you can do except try later. For RC's and beta's, the hdlist.cz can change frequently. I would not worry about it.
  20. Most of what I have read concerning this issue deals with a microphone picking up the audio and rebroadcasting it. To resolve this, set the local mic control to zero (off, defeat, low,) and within the skype controls turn up the mic setting. In Linux, using kmix, I read a report to zero the mic and turn up "capture." I hope this helps. It would be useful if you could state what your computer is or what your sound card is. Just giving the brand and model of the computer enables us to figure this out.
  21. Ian, I forgot to restart sshd after changing its listening port. DUH! I am simply attempting to maintain access to any of the servers from the same session at my office. I have done this after completing the entire task properly. It is important to restart the sshd service after making config changes. As usual, the problem is user-related. LOL I have assigned ports on the firewall to the specific ip addresses of each machine. As you know, since they all have the same external ip, the port designates which address gets the call.
  22. I have a Centos 5 server running in a Windows network. The Windows server is the DNS and Controller for the domain. The Centos machine is hosting a mail server and a web server. I am using ftp and ssh (via putty and xming) to access the machines. The problem is that putty only gets a response on port 21 or 22. I need to access the web server for updates and the Windows box has ftp access for the business users, which I can access on port 21. I have opened port 31 on the firewall (a router) and on the firewall in the linux box. I have turned off SELinux. I get no response. I have to access the network, change the port for the designated ip on the router, and then log in. It seems I should be able to access the three machines on the linux box through port designation. Any suggestions? What am I missing? The router is the firewall. The Windows box is not serving as a firewall. BTW, I checked my own router and firewall and opened the appropriate ports there.
  23. What's on my mind? You assume a great deal.

  24. I think you may need to get the sources and compile upon your own machine. You can avoid dependencies that may be either not installed on your machine or may be out of date. Get the sources and the depends, and compile the program yourself. Try it; it's fun!
