  1. can I be proud of myself anyway... :? btw: what's the diff between what I did (apt-get upgrade) and apt-get dist-upgrade ?
  2. thanks for the help. rpm -q grub shows that grub-0.93-4 is installed. here is the output from # more /boot/grub/grub.conf: #boot=/dev/hda default=0 timeout=10 splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz title Red Hat Linux (2.4.20-8) root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi initrd /initrd-2.4.20-8.img title DOS rootnoverify (hd0,4) chainloader +1 I notice that the first line boot=/dev/hda is commented out. Can I just remove the # ? and then uninstall LILO ?
  3. I know I endlessly complain about rpm & dependencies, and I even wanted to try debian for the apt-get feature. But I'm too noobish for debian yet. Current issue of Linux Magazine has a good article on using apt-get (under redhat). Since I'm using rh 9 currently, thought I'd give it a shot. Installed the apt-get rpm. Went to the various apt repositories on the internet to get the correct lines to add to my /etc/apt/sources.list file, used vi to add the lines to sources.list, did an apt-get update so it would incorporate my additions to sources.list, did an apt-get check (optional I know), then did the big one... apt-get upgrade... It appears to have finished properly. Took about 15 or 20 minutes (I have DSL). Everything still looks about the same, so guess it mostly does "behind the scenes" upgrading ...? Anyway, I'm proud of myself and I didn't even get stuck anywhere and have to come here for advice... This stuff is getting easier every day !!
  4. thanks for all the comments. Guess I'll stick with oo. My RH 9 download came with oo 1.0, so I suppose I'll install oo 1.1 when its final - its still rc4 now. Also, I read (I think on sun's website) that SO 7 is coming out real soon. BTW - since my RH download came with oo 1.0, when I install 00 1.1 do I have to uninstall oo 1.0 and then install 1.1 or do I do a "upgrade" install ? I noticed (at least with all the rc4 rpms for 1.1) that they are all "src" rpms. edit: I just noticed that chris z asked a similar question already about uninstalling so 1.0 before installing 1.1 .... he beat me by a few hours... sorry chris !
  5. Are these basically the same thing ? Or have they gotten different lately ? If they are basically the same thing, why does SO cost alot and OO is free ? I don't really need a "super polished office suite". I need something that is MS Office compatible (read & write) for word processing, and I need a good spreadsheet program. I have an extreme dislike for MS, but I must admit that I really like Excel ... I used SO a little on mdk 8.1 and 9.0, but now I am using a RH 9 download install, so I don't get SO with that (unless I can use the SO 6 from my mdk 9.0 CD ?) I also read somewhere that college students could get SO free. So since I am taking some college classes and have a student ID maybe I can check that out. appreciate any comments (I mean if OO is just as good or better, don't need to worry about getting SO)
  6. yeah - GRUB was the default during the install. I changed it to LILO cause I was used to LILO under mandrake. I don't no how to change to GRUB though... :? I am in my redhat system right now and everything is working ok. Just the boot problem is all that's wrong. I'll try GRUB first. but how do I change LILO boot to GRUB boot ? PS: this box is a few years old - no new hardware. thanks
  7. guess I'll bump this back up... All the facts are in the first post. Basically, I have to boot a new redhat 9 install from the floppy, but after that my system works great. During install I chose LILO to be on MBR, but it just won't boot from the H-D. It just scrolls 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 across the screen. So maybe I need to edit LILO ? But why doesn't it work after the install ? And what do I need to check in LILO ? I found another post (on the LQ board) about this EXACT same thing... but it doesn't appear that it was ever answered completly... I didn't want to revive someone else's old post over on that board... This machine is ONLY a RH machine - nothing else on it and no windoze
  8. scoopy mentioned back on the first page that WalMart computer for $498. Me & my wife just bought that very same machine at W-M for $498 for my wife's daughter (she just started college). So far, it seems decent (for a non-geek college student at least). My wife's daughter just wants email, chatting, and to type her assignments on MS Word or MS Works. It's a good machine for her. Not that I would buy it though... Also, someone mentioned a few posts ago about the power supply & wiring & stuff being "proprietory" on some compaqs - well I was always told that it was DELL that did that not compaq... EG: ppl told me I couldn't just buy a Dell and later switch out the PS - cuz they were diff than everyone else...
  9. thanks DragonMage as a matter of fact, I had already tried that but it didn't work. Well, I just tried it again after reading your post, and I saw that the mozilla plugins were listed and the checkbox was marked "scan for plugins at kde startup". BUT even though it was supposed to scan for plugins a startup, I just clicked the button for "scan for plugins" and now Flash DOES work... :? don't know why it didn't get it at startup but oh well, at least it works now. And it works in mozilla too... I'm on a roll here...
  10. the main thing that started me on the road to putting together my own systems was that I hated all the crap that came on the cheapie computers, or even on the mid-level decent computers - crap that I didn't want. I know, I know, I could just uninstall it - but its just the principal of the thing. I don't want AOL icons on my desktop, I don't want MS Money, I don't want MS Works, I don't want 20 icons on my desktop for various things I don't want. And I don't want a modem in the box either. I've been on broadband for a couple of years.... Oh yeah - I don't want XPee either.... :)
  11. so, did I pay too much ?? It was around the end of last year, so some components were probably more expensive then. Also, I used some pretty expensive components - an Antec full tower server case ($130) and a new Asus mobo (A7V333 that was kind of expensive) and as I said the win2K professional upgrade CD added $150 to the price. Also I bought a TDK 48x CD burner instead of the cheaper companies such as Lite-On, A-Open, etc and I bought a DVD-ROM too (only $59). Next time I put something together, well... guess I'll just keep upgrading my Antec full tower case - its great !! Next project - DVD burner and some burning software (windoze for the time being) so I can get going on backing up my dvd collection and transferring some VHS to DVD. Anyway, the original post was that I thought the Sam's computers looked like a good deal for $300 or even less. I don't remember what they were - P4 - no probably not - probably AMD or Intel Celeron....
  12. Ok, I did something else right.... thanks for all the helpful posts. I was trying to double-click my flash-plugin rpm file while in KDE, and it looked like it was starting something... but then nothing... Guess it was because I was in kde as my username, not root... so anyway, before I thought of the "not root" problem, I decided to give the command line a try. Did rpm -i flash-plugin.blah.blah and presto ! it got installed and I had to accept the user license :) Went into mozilla, went to e-cards site as bvc suggested, clicked on a demo card that said "Flash required" ... and .... drum roll please... IT WORKED !! Went to Help/About plugins and saw that flash-plugin was listed properly. Dang... I could get to like this stuff ! Doesn't work in konq yet, but I'm getting used to mozilla, so I'll worry about konq later thanks again
  13. I've been noticing some places selling inexpensive computers with linux pre-installed. Specifically, I noticed that Sam's Club (in the USA) is selling some on their website for starting at less than $300. However, they don't say what linux distro they have ... :? Personally, I like putting together my own boxes - but the last one that I did cost me a total of around $1,000 (admittedly that included a win2000 Pro "upgrade" CD for $150 - I wanted to rid myself of win98). So I was wondering about the Sam's linux computers, and the general "trend" of some other places selling pre-loaded linux machines
  14. I wrote: oh yeah I forgot, I installed RH over my mandrake install - no more urpmi ! ** ** my head is still somewhere else (in a dark place)
  15. disregard the portion of the last post where I said I was having problems getting back into my inittab - I got back into the file and returned the init default to 5. My head must have been somewhere else the other evening... :? Still want to get Flash (and Shockwave - or are they the same thing...?) set up for Konq & moz I'll read up on this board how to get urpmi set up right - and try to at least get flash/shockwave installed properly first thanks
  16. thanks for all the replies. I did what the Yin Yeti said to do, # rpm -q flash-plugin.blah blah result was "not installed..." I think its a dependency problem as to why it did not install. ok, so anyway, I've go to fix something else before I continue with this problem... (when fixing my nvidia driver under RH 9, I may have lost my inittab file... but I'm not sure (dang I hate that vi program...) So I have to boot up to command prompt and log in that way, then do startx, then everything works ok. But I want to bootup into X. (init default 5) Before I tried to fix my nvidia driver, I edited my inittab file and changed the "init default 5" to 3 just in case of problems (per nvidia's recommendation) then I installed the driver and edited inittab again and changed the "nv" to "nvidia". Anyway - nvidia 3D works great !! I was really shocked I did something right  Then when I used vi to get back into my inittab file so I could change the init default 3 back to 5 it showed me a message about 2 inittab files existing (one was inittab.swp) and did I want to delete the "swp" one, I said yes, then it opened up a "new" blank inittab file :? so now I need to find out if I really lost the file, or maybe I'm just not looking in the right place? I thought it was in /etc Sometimes I feel like a moron, but every little thing I goof up, I learn something... :)
  17. I can't view some web pages properly on my liinux box (RH 9 and mozilla) - at least the pages that use Flash. So I went to the Links button at the top of this board and downloaded the redhat 9 rpm under the "helpful links" section. (I'm using RH 9 at the moment) Then I double-clicked the rpm file, it asked me for the root password, then it seemed to be quickly done. Anyway, I went back to the webpage that was not displaying, and no difference. So I was wondering if I installed Flash properly, or maybe I have to somehow set mozilla to use it... ? :? PS: what little linux experience I have is only with Konq
  18. a few days ago I installed RH 9 over a mandrake knstall. During the redhat install, I chose to "remove all existing linux partitions" because I wanted my mandrake install completely wiped out. Also during the redhat install, I chose LILO rather than the GRUB default (and told the installer to put it in MBR). I created a boot floppy towards the end of the install. Now it never has booted from the H-D, it appears to be not even trying. If I boot from the boot floppy, it boots fine, and my redhat system works fine. Yes, I have messed around with the BIOS settings - originally it was CD first, floppy second, and HDD0 third. I tried it a couple of different ways, but no affect on problem. I like redhat so far and I'd like to play around with it for a couple of weeks, then I may try something else. I'd like to get this booting problem fixed though. Here is a copy & paste of my lilo.conf: prompt timeout=50 default=linux boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map install=/boot/boot.b message=/boot/message linear image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 label=linux initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.20-8.img read-only append="hdc=ide-scsi root=LABEL=/" other=/dev/hda5 optional label=DOS so I need help why it won't even try to boot from the H-D. LILO with my prior mandrake install booted ok from the H-D. thanks
  19. ok, I'm sure it will be. Since I have a machine (PIII 1GHz, 256 RAM, 40GB) that I am not using, I am using it just to play around with installing different distros and just getting a feel for them. When I've played around with a few, I suppose I will choose one to learn properly. A few days ago I installed RH 9 over my mandrake install. I've been getting RH the way I like it... hate to install debian on top of it... but guess that's how you learn stuff. For example, by fixing my nvidia 3D back on my old mandrake 8.1 install, and just last night I had to fix it on my new RH install - well, now I consider myself experienced in fixing nvidia drivers under linux.... :)
  20. yep, cybr answered 8 minutes after I posted my crying smiley. I knew that would affect somebody... :)
  21. ok. Now something else. I noticed cybr had an old thread about Debian and jigdo. Well, I tried out the jigdo thing, but I don't think I was doing it right. I d/l jigdo-lite and ran it in a DOS window. I don't think I did it right - I thought the path it wanted was the ftp site where the debian stuff was, so I entered that. After a few minutes of verbose stuff flying down my DOS window I realized it wasn't really doing anything... "0 files downloaded..." blah blah. So I cancelled out of the DOS job (ctl-break) and got them the old fashioned slow way by ftp download. Anyway, I got the first 2 CDs of "sid". So can I install from CD 1 or do I have to have woody installed already and then "upgrade" with my sid CD... :? I'm still playing around with my Redhat 9 install from a couple of days ago - got it working Ok, fixed the nvidia driver thing, I'm learning... ! :)
  22. somebody from another board is helping me with the boot problem. I did install kde during the install, I was just wondering how to switch back & forth - it was defaulting to gnome, but I like kde better. Anyway, the answer is that when you log back in you can click the "Session" button at the bottom of the screen (I never even noticed it  ) and select gnome or kde). Pretty easy !!
  23. after I downloaded the 3 redhat CDs from nluug, I downloaded the first 2 Debian CDs from some swiss ftp site (sunsite I think) - didn't get too good of speed from them, but at least I got 'em. I can't find any md5 sums on that swiss site, I have another thread here where I ask about that... http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=8020 but nobody ever answered...
  24. I just finished downloading the first 2 CDs of "sid" from: ftp://sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch/mirror/debi...unofficial/sid/ I don't see any md5 sums anywhere on this site. Usually when I download mandrake or redhat isos, there's a file with the correct md5 sums in the same ftp folder. Can I blow-off doing the md5 check and instead just do the "linux mediacheck" at the boot prompt ? thanks for any help
  25. well, I have a little problem. Problem: won't boot from HD (during boot-up it shows "boot from atapi CDROM: failure..." or something like that. I don't want to boot from cd, shouldn't it boot from HD if there's no CD in the drive? I can use the boot disk I created at the end of the install - that boots OK. After the install was finished, the installer told me to remove the CD from the drive, and remove the floppy from the drive and re-boot. Well, it tried to re-boot from the CD and wouldn't boot. So I put in the boot floppy and re-booted - that worked ok, and it led me thru creating a root password, a user account and a couple of other things. Then I just kind of explored around a little bit. But everytime I try to re-boot, it wont reboot from the HD. Note: during the install, it said that GRUB would be installed by default, but that I could change it to LILO if I wanted - I did. Another note: I installed redhat over my previous mandrake install, and I selected "remove all linux partitions" during the install, and it said it was going to format over my existing marndrake partitions. I let it do what it wanted to - I didn't change any of its partitioning suggestions. Is that what is causing the non-booting ? How do I get it to boot into LILO ? It's late, I'm going to bed.... thanks.
